Sixty One was born at the crossroads of serendipity, experimentation and brotherhood.

Whenever Dogfish Head President Sam Calagione and his neighborhood friends gather for drinks, they give each other a big ol' man-hug and order a round of 60 Minute IPA. A few years ago, Sam also ordered a glass of his favorite red wine and poured a little into each pint of 60 Minute. They all dug the combination of fruity complexity and pungent hoppiness, and the blend became a beloved tradition.

Sixty One captures that tradition in a bottle and marries two Dogfish Head innovations: beer/wine hybrids -- which Dogfish has focused on for well over a decade with beers like Midas Touch and Raison D'être -- and continually hopped IPAs.

The name Sixty One is a reminder that this beer is Dogfish Head’s best-selling 60 Minute IPA plus one new ingredient: syrah grape must from California. The label, painted by Sam, is a twist on a typical watercolor. Rather than using water, Sam mixed the green pigment with beer and the red pigment with wine. And because Sixty-One pairs so well with chocolate, he painted the browns on the label with melted chocolate.

Sixty One debuted in March 2013.

Poured into a wide mouth, grip shaped goblet: color is copper with an amber hue, head is off white with fine bubbles and presents about 1/4 inch thick, head dissipates quickly to thin top and ring along glass sides, spotty lacing on glass.

Smell is base sixty minute with pine and pith, blended with dry pinot noir must and acidity, light toast and base malt.

Taste is similar with base sixty minute flavor with a drying light pinot noir note. More specifically - light pith and pine, toast and base malt with pinot noir flavor backing and providing a dry finish.

Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, lighter sweetness, drying bitterness but maybe lighter than base sixty minute.

Overall a great rendition on a classic brand and another interesting beer/wine must blend from DFH.

12oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe

o- big tart grape notes over a med malt body; restrained sweetness; med-high carb w/ a dry finish; an odd combo of flavors for the style, paired w/ excessive carbonation; a commendable attempt, but doesn't quite come together imo

Strange pour, medium gold towards the top where the glass is wider, very soft gold down low. Healthy head with bits of lace. Nose brings grape, malt, pine.

Taste has pine, mild Pino, earthy, light to medium kilned malt. Medium mouthfeel. Finish is a nice blending of the wine and IPA. Really ties together at the end.

Clear, bright amber with an average size white head and light lacing. There is enough of a vinous element in the aroma to shift it a bit from a typical 60 Minute smell. Hops steer the taste; some citrus, some pine and a light touch of fruit. Decent bitterness, good carbonation but the mouthfeel seems thinner than anticipated. Fine overall, though.

Reddish color; medium-sized, off-white head. The aroma of grape, malt, bread, and citrus. Malty taste with some wine notes and moderate hoppy bitterness. Interesting beer.

Brewpub zombie beer…

Crystal clear; amber like with pinkish reddish hue; dirty white head; nice retention.

Nose is aromatic like potpourri; I want to see its floral first and foremost but this is a hard one to describe; there’s a distinct uniqueness to the floral character it’s grape like but I swear I smell a hoppy cotton candy, if you’ve ever had those cotton candy grapes…just very unique mix of flavors, different and hard to put words to, good malty depth lies underneath it all.

The taste has the same interesting unique mix; the malt presence is more noticeable and really brings this beer back and forth between worlds, I gotta go with grape like cotton candy again but the traditional 60 min hops poke out more now, little earth and little sappy; a good rich toastiness kicks in on the finish.

Body is firmly in medium; crisp and clean finish, bitterness is moderate but tampered by the grape mist which lends a drying sweetness on the tongue.

Hazy, bright crimson coloring, dotted white head.

Aroma: the difference is immediately detectable. Slightly tart, very fruity aromatics from the get-go. Not getting much from the hops front, though. Bitterness is kept at bay. It is lovely though. Irresistibly intriguing.

Taste: Wine-like texture greets the palate at first, traces of tannins. Deep fruit factor, with hop character peeking out occasionally. Bits of sour butts up against sweet, with bitter trying to take over. Medium-bodied, with a long and complex finish.

You can say what you like about Dogfish Head, but they take risks and they don't do boring. I'm liking this one quite a bit. Best of both worlds happening here.
