On tap in Asheville.
I'm surprised to find I haven't rated this before. It's certainly been too long since I've had this. While the strong aroma is no more or less appealing than I recall, the flavor and mouthful are superb and better than remembered.
Mild-moderate tartness with loads of sweet and sour fruits, including cherry and raspberry.
Lively and fairly high but soft and appealing carbonation. Excellent large and dense head.
Overall: a joy.

Bottle BB 6-29-17. DFH Tulip.

A: pours a surprisingly dark red/brown with 1 finger khaki head, lots of visible carbonation. Not much retention, but fairly good lacing. No haze, clear (left a little sediment in the bottle).

S: the sourness is perceptible on the pour from a distance pf 8 inches. Deeper inspection yields a lemony, citric, acetic, and earthy mix. Black cherries and cape gooseberries. Dried cranberries.

T: bright, tart arrival, slightly sweet and extremely fruity mid palate, turns toward the end to a very faint, very familiar earthy English hop, or perhaps the light roast of the barley. Right as it transitions from arrival to mid palate you are assaulted with this puckering tartness that you just don't want to quit. Then right at the end the malt toastiness and cozy earthy hop do a tango; it tastes - a little like young bourbon. Young wheated bourbon.

M: lighter side of midweight, slightly slick but the acidity makes it feel less so. Lower carbonation than the appearance lets on.

O: I am not a huge fan of sours, but I LOVE this beer. Balanced, complex, distinctive. If you like balanced to malty beers and want to try a sour, this is a great place to start. Liked it better than Rodenbach or Rosetta. Would buy again on s special occasion.
This is probably going to be my highest-rated beer.

Pours a lovely ruby brown with a minimal head. The smell is fantastically tart with nice stone fruits and an earthiness to it. Taste is tart/sour with cherry and and sweet raspberry also coming through. There is a nice acidity to this that is not too harsh, it just adds to the beer making for a nice treat. The aftertaste is a little bit winey, but there is also that sweet fruit left on the palette. Good carbonation, a touch prickly. Quite a nice beer, very easy to enjoy and worth a recommendation and revisit.

A real nice beer, with the touch of a champagne. I can drink this beer with my wife and she have love it.

The IBU is definately 0, and the SRM is about 20. The 330 ml bottle is a must for everyone that want to taste a beer out of the common.

Try this one as soon a possible.

From the bottle, it pours a reddish brown amber with a small head, quickly dissipating to a ring and a thin layer. Tart smell. Tart and yet sweet.....Yum!!

This is one of the few Flanders Reds that I like. (I suppose it is not open-minded to be that way about a style, but I have tried very hard to like the sours and their brethren, the gueze... but I cannot acquire the taste no matter how much I spend.)

Anyway... The Duchesse sour complemented a summer salad and went well enough with the basil pesto on pasta.
For me, this sour is contained so that the other ingredients can be appreciated.

Reviewed in MJ's "Great Beers of Belgium" he said it had "a good lace; and has a smooth rich, texture; with a very interesting interplay of passion-fruit and chocolate. (I didn't get the chocolate.)
Reviewed also in Roger Protz' "300 More Beers To Try Before You Die", a sequel to his CAMRA classic.
The Duchess is also listed on the "1001" and most arguably should be there.

An August 2016 tasting did not change my rating.

Poured from a 750 cork and cage into a snifter, the beer is a deep, ruby-red color. Very vibrant in the light, with a steady flow of carbonation feeding the tall, bubbly, foamy, off-white head. Nose of tart cherries, dry Merlot notes, earthy highlights, and subtle sourness. Flavors are smooth and sweet cherry forward, followed by rich berry blends, tart grape, earthy highlights, woody notes, and some sugary sweetness lingering about here and there. The sour notes are very mellow (this bottle has a couple of years on it). Smooth and light bodied, with a dry and crisp finish. Solid cherry sweet aftertaste, again with hints of sourness. Very drinkable.

A- Copper brown coloration with a one finger head.

S- Lots of pungent sour aromas. Kind of gross, since this is my first sour ever. But we will see how it tastes...

T- My lord, I have seen the light of the sour beer! I was expecting a drainpour, and to just delete everything I've written so far, but this is amazing! Very very sweet and sour, almost like a sweet tart candy. It's a strong fruity sourness, like sour raspberries.

F- Light body, with a high amount of carbonation that tickles the tongue as you're sipping.

O- I finally see why people love sour beers so much. I went in with an open mind, and was not disappointed!

Dark reddish color with a good lasting tan head. Funky tart and sour candied cherry scent. Taste is just like the smell with a sour after taste. Medium creamy body. Different but I like.

Smelled funky but god damn this was so good. Awesome sweet fruity flavor, relatively syrupy mouthfeel. A++ would drink again. Bartender even made fun of me for pronouncing it bore-gone. Thanks, bud, for letting me know it's bore-gon-ay

Copper reddish brown color with a foamy tan head. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, barnyard, and grass. Tart taste up front but not overpowering. Cherry, raspberry, and understated funk. Almost all fruit for me. Dry and easy drinking.

Pours a slightly hazy muddy brown red with a thin layer of foam and active bubbly carbonation stemming from the bottom of the glass.

Apple skins, toffee, caramel, almost brown sugar like note, fig, raisin, oak/wood, and some earthiness.

Immediately wave of tart apple skins, white grapes, raisins, followed in the middle by a sweet caramelized sugar, toffee, and subtle vanilla character, and finishes with more grape/vinous and sour apple tartness.

Light-medium bodied, medium-high carbonation, tart, fruity, sweet but not cloying, dry finish.

Overall, my first time having this and I'm more than pleased. Very cidery and wine-like in character but highly complex which only adds more layers as it warms up.

L - Clear red-tinted brown. Pours a large but not-so-dense head. It really looks quite lovely.

S - Sweet vinegar abounds. A small vanilla and floral undertone from the oak. It doesn't smell as bright and acidic as I expected from previous reviews.

T - A bright, sharp attack quickly gives away to sweet brown sugar. There is a lot of balsalmic vinegar present: this would be AMAZING with some bruschetta and strand pasta with a light olive oil dressing.

F - The crisp carbonation does a great job of being noticeable but allowing the flavors to shine. There is only a slight sense of body.

O - As an acidic food fanatic, this beer is the best I have ever had. It reminds me of a mind-blowing bruschetta I had with a sublime balsalmic vinaigrette drizzled on top. My #1 all-time favorite beer. Drink this beer with dimmed lights for best effect.

With an anticlimactic & pathetic little pop, it pours a lovely reddish brown with nice but short lived whitish head. Aromas of vinegar & grain & some fruitiness, very lovely. Exceptional flavor, initially sour then finishes with fruity sweetness with just a hint vanilla & other oaky flavors. It's not too sour or too sweet, just perfect. I've only tasted a few sours, I'd rate this just behind Grand Cru, probably the best beer I've tasted. I was parched after working outside in the sun & DDB hit the spot, much better than Gatorade. May need a little more carbonation but definitely one of my favorites.

A unique tasting beer ..has a unique taste like a slight acetic acid but delicious and consistent thought. Dark red in appearance. Has a light yet unique flavor. I believe this may pair well with a lamb dish.

Dark red with ruby highlights with a thin head that retreats quickly and leaves a thin ring along the tulip's perimeter. No lacing

The smells and tastes are biting, different and hard to identify - but in a good way consistent with the style. Balsamic and orange rind dominate - throughly captivating.

Thinnish and watery but with ample carbonation to expand and release the flavors on the tongue.

Not an everyday sort but waits for you at the end of the beer spectrum for when you are ready.

From bottle, pours dark red with little to no head. Aroma sour, cherry, red wine, nail polish. Taste follows the nose sour, cherry, red wine like. I very much enjoyed this number.

First try of the style. It pours a beautiful dark red with a foamy whit head that lingers. It goes downhill from there. The sourness of the aroma is off-putting. Taste follows the aroma with but even more sour and funky. Pardon my unrefined palate, but this is practically undrinkable. I will try to finish it out of respect, but that the best think I can say about it.

UPDATE: Couldn't drink it. Hated to do it but drain-poured it :(

I can't say that I enjoy the sours. This is a very complex beer with strong notes of sour red wine. It's a blend of alcohols that I can't really get behind. Beautiful coloring with a tart smell of vinegar and sweet berries. Full bodied on the tongue but washes down without much grace. Just not a fan of the style.

Bought a 4-pack of 11.2 oz. bottles from Whole Foods in Arlington, VA. Best by 2017-06-29. Poured into a tulip glass.

Look: Nice ruby/garnet color with small amount of tan head with tiny bubbles.

Smell: Red wine vinegar.

Taste: Sweet and sour. Sour cherry. Acidic/astringent.

Feel: Fizzy. Sweetness/stickiness balances nicely against the dryness of the acidity.

Overall: For one of my first sours, I'm not well-versed enough to judge this well, but it's really enjoyable.

Sampled on 2/11/16 from bottle labeled "best before 2017-6-29". Aroma: Initial aroma of sour red wine. Aroma developed to become slightly earthy, very light sulfur with ester hints of stone fruit. Appearance: dark Amber with ruby hues. Moderately clear. Poor head retention with no head and only fine bubbles around run. Light amounts of fine lacing quickly dissipate. Flavor: malt forward balance, with no hop flavor and little to no perceivable hop bitterness. Initial palate of sweet candi that quickly turns sour and lingers on palate for short time before quickly fading away. Dry finish with pleasant cherry/stone fruit aftertaste. Mouthfeel: medium body. Light carbonation. No alcohol warmth. No creaminess. Light, slightly astringent and acidic aftertaste. Overall: complex beer! Balance between malt sweetness and sour is amazing. The types and succession of changing flavors is fast and very enjoyable. Only complaint is there is a sweetness perceived after consuming about 7 oz that occur during initial palate that detracts from the beer and really slows the rate of consumption - not that you would pound this beer, rather it encourages very slow sipping. I don't have a lot of experience with this style but am excited to try other examples and will keep an eye out for this gem! 42/50.

The usual flanders appearance, if anything this one leaned a little more oud bruin than it did flanders, more brown than red. Little in the way of head formation, 1/12". Aroma was blended sweet and sour beer with old wet wood notes.

Taste was very young, didn't impart much tartness or sour, underwhelming was certainly a word that came to mind. Too much acetic notes. Just kind of rolled through the brown malt, tasted like old school recreation type of stuff. Interesting trip down historical road, but there was just too much burton tea like notes and dark fruit bitterness instead of some tart dark cherry, leather and oak notes I was hoping for. This had the earthy notes I guess.

A: 4.25 Pours a sort of murky, reddish-brown with a large, light tan head. Good retention and lacing.

S: 4.25 Smells rather sweet for the style with lots of cherries and vanilla. A good amount of vinegar and an almost meaty quality come through under the fruitiness and sweet elements.

T: 4 Like the nose, the flavor starts off rather sweet with caramel, toffee, vanilla, and cherry. A mild acetic quality has an umami/Worcestershire sauce flavor that’s really nice and interesting. Things overall are very tasty and balanced but the sweetness is a bit much and gets slightly cloying at times.

M: 4.5 The body and carbonation are spot on. The sweetness hinders drinkability a bit though.

O: 4.25 This is a nice, interesting, and fairly well balanced Flanders red. A bit sweet for my tastes; it almost seems like they back sweetened the beer. Not up to Rodenbach or even some American versions, but still a solid brew.
