Oatmeal StoutOatmeal Stout
Notes: Silver Medal Winner 1997 World Beer Championships - Oatmeal Stouts.
Our classic dark beer. Full body and a well rounded flavor comes from a foundation of seven different grains. The oats add a special silky texture that complements the roasted malts. The rich malty flavor is spiced with plenty of Northern Brewer and Fuggles hops for balance. Enjoy this perennial Free State Favorite by itself or as a blend with one of our other beers.

Out of the bottle and poured into a pint glass will create a nice 1/2" to 3/4" head. I prefer out of the tap, it seems to have a better flavor. Occasionally when drinking straight from the bottle there is a metallic taste that lingers. This is my house beer, I drink this year round, especially during summer. It is not as refined and smooth as some stouts, and does have a bit of a bite, all of which I like. It has a nice dark well roasted color to it hinting at the slight roasted flavor that accompanies the slight bite.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet roasted oats and chocolate malt.

The flavor is sweet roasted malt and some black licorice and fruit with an ashy bitter finish. The mouthfeel is rather thin and watery and nitro like.

Overall, a nice oatmeal stout. I remember liking this more last time I had it.

Pours almost black colour with medium brown foamy slow fading froth. Malty hoppy aroma and taste of coffee, chocolate, brown sugar and vanilla. Smooth and complex at 5.7 ABV.

This beer pours a dark brown color with a 1.5 finger, frothy tan head. Retention is above average for the style and there are some spots and chunks of lacing left on the glass.

Smell is subtle and also pretty run of the mill. Only roasted malts are apparent, but if you really agitate the beer a hint of chocolate and bitter coffee makes themselves known.

Taste very similar, although a bit more flavorful. The hops definitely make themselves known on the finish providing a good deal of bitterness.

Feel is light, smooth and creamy with low carbonation. Dangerously drinkable.

Overall this beer is solid, but I wish it was thicker and more flavorful. I will say that it makes for a solid morning beer. Light, easy drinking and low enough abv that it won't put you on your ass for the rest of the day.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) brown bottle into a conical pint glass; no production information.
A: Pours a clear, but very dark brown color with a one half to one inch head, decent retention and rings of lacing.
S: Aromas of coffee with sugar, dark berries (including their tartness), and maybe a little cocoa.
T: Sweet, like most oatmeal stouts. Flavor of dark roasty malts, coffee, anise, and pepper with saccharin-like sweetness. Bitterness evident relatively late and entirely consistent with this style.
M: Full bodied with ongoing effervescence. Slick with a clean finish.
O: A very respectable version of the oatmeal stout style, more impressed by the second (or third) go.

Pours pitch black with a thin tan head. head dissipates leaving no residual head or lacing. Beer is rather thin in appearance and tales on a reddish hue when held to the light. When held to the light you can almost see through the beer. Kind of looks like Coca Cola?

Aroma has notes of nuts, roasted malts, and earthy hops.

Taste follows through with some toasted malts, cocoa, earthy hops, and bit of oatmeal malts. As the beer warms there is a bit of a licorice note. Somewhat sweet with a slight bitterness on the finish. Pretty classic flavor profile but its tasty.

Feel is light bodied and actually quite thin - I would like a bit more in the mouthfeel. Very mild carbonation. Pretty dry finish.

Overall a nice oatmeal stout. Well done.

Appearance: An impressive bubble show produces the full three fingered effect; the liquid is fudge brown, the head tan and the retention/lacing good

Smell: Roasty, with chocolate, licorice and oat tones

Taste: Chocolate and dark fruit forward, with sweet licorice tones building; earthy bitterness, through the middle with residual sweetness from the fruit and licorice in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: As others have noted, the mouthfeel here is missing the creamy fuller bodied tones expected for the style; otherwise, not bad

Thanks, jmueller216, for the opportunity

Not particularly exciting, but easy to drink and no off flavors. Upfront roasty bitterness with hop and oat flavor and a lightly sweet malty finish with mild astringency. Light body, little bit of lacing down the glass. Nothing to write home about, but pretty nice on a warm autumn evening.

This is a nice session oatmeal stout. Decent chocolate, it's also smooth and creamy. A thin feel as expected for the style but with that easy drinking. It has an overall sweetness that I like too.

Dark brown with a light brown head, which lasts throughout the drink.

Light nutty, but with a strange slightly skunky smell very light for a stout.

Light nutty, coffee flavor, along with the moderate oatmeal flavor you would expect.

Thin for a stout. This reminds me of a light summer beer feel wise.

I enjoy this beer. I just think it's a bit different than what you would expect for an oatmeal stout.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Speiglau Stout glass.

Look is pitch black with a bubbly white head.

Aroma is straight roast with a malty oatmeal sweetness.

Taste is less roasty than aroma but still pretty roast malt. Lots of upfront sweet oatmeal flavor.

Really solid oatmeal stout.

Poured into a tulip glass. I got this one in a beer of the month club. Had a bitter taste that disappeared as the beer warmed. Poured dark with an aroma that offered very little. The taste is better than the smell with a little cocao. The beer is a little light in feel for a stout.

A - Dark brown appearance, almost black, with a thin white head

S - Not much smell to talk about. Maybe some sweet/creaminess and...oats? Pretty bland.

T - More blandness going on, or maybe not going on, it's hard to say. A little bit of the oat/sweetness from the smell but noting notable.

M - Lighter and more carbonated than expected from a stout.

O - This was an extra in a trade so I can't really complain, but if this won a silver medal at the 1997 World Beer Championship then 1997 must have been a rough year for craft beer. Overall, just really bland and forgettable.

Unknown bottle or best by date

Pours cola brown with auburn highlights, minimal light tan, almost eggshell white head.

Smells of roasted malts, coffee grounds, subtle nutty walnut.

Taste initially light roast coffee with a noticeable bitterness. Has a German/European hop flavor. Kind of odd that it's a stout but the flavors in the background are akin to a Pilsner. As it warms, a little bit of sweet dark fruit appears along with some nuttiness with walnut.

Light bodied for a stout, medium carbonation and somewhat on the higher end from what. I expected. Lingering bitterness still but also a bit dry.

I get more coffee and hop bitterness here than oats. It's a pretty light bodied and quite drinkable stout for sure also aided by some crisp carbonation. Got better as it warmed. Pretty decent.

The beer comes in a dark brown color.

The aroma offers cocoa, dark fruit, raisin, medium roast.

The flavor follows with upfront medium roast, cocoa, light earthiness, oatmeal, tinge of creamy sweetness.

Look : Pours a chestnut brown color, darkens to a deep chocolate brown in the glass. The head is slow to form and barely does, but the finger that forms sticks around for awhile. 100% opaque.

Smell : Nutty brown aromas with toasted nuts (walnuts, pecan, brazil nuts), oatmeal, lactose, cocoa powder, and dark malts.

Taste : Fairly dirty with a hop bite out front, followed by smooth velvety notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. The dirty flavor persists, and finishes with slight rust and lactose. Reminds me a bit of a west coast oatmeal stout.

Feel : Pretty carbonated, a bit dry in the context of oatmeal stouts, leaving a waxy layer on the tongue as it finishes.

Overall, FreeState Oatmeal Stout is good, but not great. Not something I'll probably be buying again soon.

Very satisfying stout with no exotic things happening here. I tend to like stouts with more this that or the other thing, but, really, I could drink this all day and not be upset. Drier than some - in a good way.

The oatmeal makes the coffee tones very mild, almost too mild. Nothing out of the ordinary for this stout, but a nice solid attempt, and a nice dry aftertaste.

Bottle received in trade from Bigtreebrewing, thanks for the opportunity.
Solid dark brown color with faint ruby at the edges and a smallish khaki head the slowly dissipates. Chocolate and caramel maltiness with a hint of roast. Creamy silky mouthfeel. Nice beer, could maybe use a hint more roastiness though.

Purchased in Newton, KS. Brought back to Oklahoma. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter glass.

Black liquid with a short tan head. Incredible aroma, lots of toasty charred notes.

Flavor is very toasty and dry. Dark chocolate. Very earthy. Delicious bitter with a little bit of sweetness in the background.

Dryer than most oatmeal stouts but I like it.

Nice texture, smooth yet a little bit "chewy." Fairly thick mouthfeel for the style.

This one is worth seeking out. Exceptionally good.

The second in an installment of beers I got in exchange for some jalapeno poppers at a party at my neighbors house. Side poured with standard vigor from the bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Standard oatmeal stout appearance, which means amazing. Pours a dark black color with a thin caramel head that dissipates relatively quickly, but leaves just a trace of lacing on the glass. Pretty standard Free State packaging, as soon as you see this beer you know it is from Free State.

Smell - A bit of coffee, some chocolate, touch of molasses and some creaminess. Pretty subdued nose.

Taste - Much more pronounced than the nose, although the same flavors are present. The creaminess is amazing, with chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee flavors balanced by just a bit of bitter hops.

Mouthfeel - This is probably my favorite part of the beer, given its thick creamy nature, smooth finish, and easy drinkability. Very nicely done, feels a lot more expensive on the palate.

Overall - This is a pretty good beer! Condor recommended and approved. For the price it is hard to beat, especially from such a small brewery. Give this a try, you wont be disappointed.

Sampling right now on 6/28/14. Bought this one while down in Kansas at the beginning of the month, just a single for $1.49. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a "Free State Beer" pilsner glass.

Pours black in color and you can't see through it. A small beige head is seen that settles down to a thin layer on top and sides. Ringed lacing is seen when sipped that slides back down the inside of the glass. The aroma is of roasted malts with a hint of molasses. The taste has lots of roasted malt flavor with some spice and coffee. A very slight bitter finish that doesn't last long. Perfect carbonation for this type of brew. Overall a very tasty stout!

Light black in color and just a touch of light will get through. A solid half inch of light beige colored foam rests on top. Brussels lacing. I smell judiciously used oats and dark malt. The first sip reveals a quick rush of oats that is quickly overpowered by dark roasted malt which leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. The mouth is creamy and slightly chalky. Straightforward and simple.

A - Dark black, only a glimmer of light comes through. Very little head but lacing holds up well

S - pretty weak, molasses and spices from the hops

T - Chocolate, coffee, toffe

M - a bit watery for a stout

O - a bit dissapointing, not as strong flavor and mouthfeel as I'd like from an outmeat stout.. Would drink another, but not something I'll seek out.

12oz. Bottle poured into a pint glass. An extra courtesy of GHB.

Appearance: Dark brown with a nice tan head of about 1" that sticks around with some nice lacing.

Smell: Mild coffee and chocolate on the nose.

Taste: Coffee up front with some bitter chocolate on the finish, maybe a hint of toffee but overall a pleasant bitterness dominates from the combination of the roasted malt and hops.

Mouthfeel: Relatively thin on the palate, maybe just a little too thin for an oatmeal stout.

Overall: There are really some nice flavors here; however, the lightness of the body keeps this beer from being as good as it could be.
