Silver Medal Winner 1997 World Beer Championships - Oatmeal Stouts.
Our classic dark beer. Full body and a well rounded flavor comes from a foundation of seven different grains. The oats add a special silky texture that complements the roasted malts. The rich malty flavor is spiced with plenty of Northern Brewer and Fuggles hops for balance. Enjoy this perennial Free State Favorite by itself or as a blend with one of our other beers.

Appearance: Pours out dark brown with ruby highlights. About 1/4" of tan head forms that has below average retention and lacing. 3

Smell: Some dark malts show up, with chocolate and coffee as well. Some graininess and herbal notes show as well.

Taste: Dark malts, light roast, chocolate and coffee, some herbal hop notes hit on the back end. Not the most flavorful oatmeal stout out there, but decent.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with pretty low carbonation, reasonably smooth and a bit slick. Overall, not my favorite oatmeal stout by any stretch, but solid enough.

(5 oz pour at the brewpub a week and one half ago)

Darn, I wish I drank this earlier during my visit... roasty with dark carmelized sugars and herbal hoppiness (a la Jager) in the background... perhaps a little too clean for the style but, after having had a few samples and some grub, this still leapt out on my senses... maybe a toe or two in the Foreign Export realm, with its toasted molasses meanderings... smooth, clean, light in body; I'd get a big boy glass next time (2214)

12oz bottle. No bottling date information found.
Deep brown colored body, with a coffee brown colored back lit edge. Two fingers of tan head; this settles back to islands and a ring. Leaves behind scattered spots of lacing.
Aroma of oats and roasted malts. Definitely has a chocolate nose note.
Taste is roasted malts, including oats. Any sweetness is balanced by a dry and slightly bitter coffee grounds flavor. The chocolate component is unsweetened. Oats, coffee, and chocolate in the aftertaste.
Thinner mouth feel, with a soft texture. Has a drying effect in the mouth. Good carbonation.
Good use of oats to produce a soft drinking stout. More dry and bitter than sweet.

Very dark brown with some ruby highlights, modest tan head that retains fairly well and some decent lacing.
The aroma is sweet roasted malt with hints of caramel and chocolate.
The taste is also sweet roasted malt up front with chocolate, caramel, coffee and pumpernickel bread. the finish is somewhat dry with a bit of hops bitterness to balance things out.
The body is medium, carbonation is fairly high but this is still fairly smooth and very drinkable. Altogether, this is a nice, tasty brew, not as smooth or full bodied as i expected for an oatmeal stout but still enjoyable.

Pours black with a couple fingers of khaki foam. Liquid moves easily, hinting at a low viscosity. Aroma is big earthy and toasty malts, with more subtle roasty and bready malts behind. Some chocolate and caramel sweetens it up a little. Flavor profile is toasty, earthy, and roasty malts with an emphasis on toasty and earthy. It has a bitter, dry undertone, which is enhanced by the earthy notes. Chocolate adds some depth, but not sweetness, coming in the form of bitter unsweetened chocolate. Some toffee and lactose sit behind, but do little to divert the direction of the flavor profile - which is aimed towards a soft, bitter bite and a dry finish. Mouth feel is medium-thin with an uneven, tight effervescence texture. Overall, it's a bit dry, a bit bitter, and 'dark'. It fits the bill for an easy-drinking 'dark' beer that requires no processing.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 12oz bottle.

I got a bottle of this beer from my good friend and old neighbor from the 'Wego. It poured an opaque dark with off white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had subtle roast and peat notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with slight roast and earth presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

From a beer of the month club. Poured with a dense (1/4") light tan foam head and a nearly opaque, dark brown body that has hints of garnet when held up. On the nose are primary scents of roasted malts (coffee/burnt) along with a secondary bit of sweetness (chocolate/toffee). Taste matches the scent well. Feel is medium bodied, at times of quite smooth, with a slightly linger bitter aftertaste. Overall a solid brew!

Note that the 2021 variant of this seems to be listed at 5.7% ABV with 25 IBU, so a bit subtler than I imagine the 6.1%/42 IBU is in the description.

Free State Oatmeal Stout has a thin, cola-like, white head, a very dark brown appearance, with ruby highlights, as the light strikes it, and no lacing. The aroma is muted, but one detects dark bread crust. The taste is the same, with low bitterness. F.S. Oatmeal Stout has a low-medium body and a dry finish.

Pours a dark black with a thin head. Smell is syrupy, very sweet; taste is much more subdued. Some cocoa and coffee, carbonation on the tongue and finish is sweet.
