Style: Irish Dry Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
O’Hara’s Leann Folláin (”leann folláin” being the Gaelic/Irish phrase meaning wholesome ale or stout) is a full-bodied extra Irish stout launched in 2009 following the very positive feedback to our limited edition O’Hara’s Celebration Extra Stout which was brewed in 2008. We have now included “Leann Folláin” in our 500ml bottle core brand range. O’Hara’s Leann Folláin at 6.0% abv is laden with complex chocolate and coffee flavours balanced by a robust bitterness and delicate spicy aroma imparted from the generous portions of Northdown and Fuggle Hops.

Beer bottle (50 cl.) purchased from Le Souffleur de bières, and tasted in 2012.

Appearance : dark brown color with tan foamy head.
Smell : roasted malt, chocolate and spicy aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : roasted malt flavour with coffee and chocolate notes, moderate bitter with a average duration.
Drinkability : a good beer in the typical style Irish dry stout (but too expensive).

This is a new brew (Feb/March 2009) from Carlow Brewery. I picked up a couple of bottles from Superquinn, Dublin at €2.39 for a 35.5cl bottle. Very nice presentation; brown glass with cream label with celtic design. At the top of the label, it reads "full-bodied extra Irish Stout". I reckon this is brewed mainly for export.

It pours a very dark brown brew with a dark tan head that subsides, smelled of some bitter coffee grinds with spiciness.
The taste was not what I was expecting; mainly chocolate in the flavour with maybe just a touch of coffee coming through. It came across as a sweet stout/milk stout, but without the sweetness. There would be very little similarity here with, say Youngs double chocolate stout.
Mouthfeel was very very smooth!

This is a very interesting brew and certainly worth a try.

Poured a deep dark chocolate brown with some mahogany highlights when held to the light,a frothy one finger tan colored head atop.Ton of coffee roast with some woody smokiness, pretty much like a mocha coffee.A little sharper than expected in the mouth,I would like more of a smooth creamy feel.Dry heavy roast on the palate with some bitter chocolate underneath,it has a little more "oomph" to it compared to others of the style. Not bad but the feel takes away from a pretty good beer.

AKA O'Haras Extra Irish Stout. 330 ml bottle.

Pours very dark brown, essentially black but with mahogany edges in the light. Large, creamy beige head. Impressive.

Aroma (after the head dies down): Appealing. Bready and nutty

Rich malty flavor with plenty of dark roasted grain flavor and just a touch of smoke. Medium bitterness.

Medium+ body with medium-light carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: clearly above average for style. Markedly improved with warming.

500ml bottle - you can call beer 'wholesome', right on the front label, as long as you employ a different language? Ok, then.

This beer pours a very dark brown colour, with prominent auburn basal edges, and three chubby fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy tan head, which leaves some splendid cascading waterfall lace around the glass as it slowly but evenly subsides.

It smells of bittersweet cocoa powder, lightly roasted caramel malt, cafe-au-lait, vanilla beans, and some minor earthy, weedy, and floral noble hoppiness. The taste is bready and grainy caramel malt, a touch of free-range ashiness, cold coffee, a hint of vanilla ice cream, fading dark chocolate notes, and more understated leafy, spicy, and floral hop bitterness.

The carbonation is quite light in its lilting frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with a nice airy creaminess settling in shortly after the get-go. It finishes off-dry, the caramel, chocolate, and vanilla-laced coffee keeping it real.

Overall, this Leann Folláin is certainly wholesome-seeming, in a full, round, and palate-placating manner. Yeah, nothing wrong with this one, and even the extra point of alcohol is nowhere to be seen. Nice stuff, so on to the rest of this serving - Slainte!

Had off the cask at the Bull and Castle in Dublin.

A - pours a deep black w/ a solid head, leaves moderate lacing. Looks like what a good stout should look like.

S - strong on sweet chocolate and roasted coffee beans. There is also a bit of alcohol on it, but not too much.

T - rich chocolate & coffee w/ some hop bitterness. Creamy and delicious - the taste, as it should be, is where this beer really shines. I couldn't get enough of it.

M - Again, rich and creamy, medium to heavy.

D - it took me a long while to drink this beer - as it was already almost at room temperature off the cask, that wasn't a problem. Not a beer I would want to have more than a pint of at a time. Definitely for savoring. The best Irish beer I had on my trip to Ireland.

From the 330 ml. bottle with a best before 28 Feb 2018 date. Sampled on August 18, 2017.

The pour is an opaque near black with a lingering but modest, silky tan head. It looks exactly like a stout should so I'll give it a 5 out of 5.

The aroma is rich in roasted dark malt sweetness with sensations of coffee and cocoa mixed in. A low to no hop profile.

The body is well above medium and nearly full as well as smooth.

The chocolate or cocoa malt sweetness kicks in quickly in the flavor but it is otherwise sweet. A mild to moderate dry finale. Really a nice Irish Stout. I would easily drink this one again with passion.
