Gilden is one of the older Kölsch beers in Köln, supposedly traced back to the 'Gilden Haus' in 1296. Today its brewed by Sion Brauerei and is one of the more average Kölsch beers. Their beer coasters are written in Kölsch dialect and simply translate to 'you have a very nice place here with an excellent Kölsch'.

Color is of a clear and transparent light gold. Head is normal--large, fluffy, exuberant, and of a bright white color. Scent is clean with a delicate hop profile. Taste is much the same and finishes dry, clean, and satisfying. This is a thirst quenching Kölsch. Not much to hate here. Its a middle of the road Kölsch flavor, not bland like Gaffel and not too hoppy for the style like Mühlen.

Last bottle sampled from a generous gift of a friend who'd visited Koln on business trip.
Bright golden color, with a generous, fluffy ivory head, maintaining it's ground for a respectable duration.
Aroma: delicate, even say sophisticated, with a significant, though subtle, brace of floral hops and soft fruity notes.
Nice texture, with a neat little play on the palate, light bodied and so smooth and easy to drink, with a dry, mellow fruitiness (think of pear, apple). Very tasteful hop presence, beautiful flavor, light, crisp, tasty.
A very approachable, highly satisfying ale, this. This ought to be a more well-known, more popular style of brew here in the states. A pity some ingenious American brewer can't produce a year-round version, as the style outshines lagers in flavor, and may change some minds among those who feel that ales aren't up their alley. (Goose Island's Summertime comes closest, inn my experience.)
This is the kolsch I'll judge all others against.

A round of applause for this get-you-out-of-the-möbelmesse-boredom sorta Kölsch: this is definetly, so far, the least mediocre product from those proud (frankly i dont know why) Kölon...ers?

Pour doesnt really give you much hopes after rounds and rounds of tasteless Kölsches: the visual impression pretty much fits the general description.

The nose however is more acute than others, more citric and imposing with some malt to it.

The taste itself is very pleasant, in abundance of hops and citrusy feel that probably even makes it an antisceptic ale. Very good amounts of wheat and malt hanging out in the background.

God, why must i have discovered this Kölsch only in my last day in Köln?

Best before 04-07-05. Poors in with nice and quiet good lasting white foam and a beautifull clear golden color. Nose is delicate; fruityness of litle esters and a good hopnose with in the back also a litle maltarome makes nose joyfull and wondering how this one taste. Dry and malty with then rapidly incomming fruityness and aftertaste is quiet bitter for its style. No off tastes or hanging bitterness so mouthfeel is good and enjoyable. Drinkability is that of a good Koelsch so smooth, easy and enjoyable.

Courtesy by my flatmate's friend who hand-carried this beer straight from Koeln. BB 12/07, served chilled in a weizen glass.

A: bright light-yellow in colour, coming with a thick layer of foamy head with good retention; carbonation is ve...ry lively...
S: distinct fruity and floral aroma of German noble hops, featuring some citrusness to balance with mildly doughy malts as well as grainy notes. Also at presence are cane-sugar juice and a light hint of melon. Overall, the aroma is semi-sweetly fruity, quite nice but simple for a fresh Koelsch.
T: rather neutrally-flavoured upfront, gradually bringing on board a crisp palate almost like a quality lager... but an unwanted touch of plastic edge of macro-lager and some "rice-ness" also come along... the palate gradually turns dryish, added with quiet flows of hop bitterness... quietly but surely, the bitterness lingers in the end~~
M&D: crisp, clean, and softly fizzy, this is a feather-light-bodied, easy-drinking Koelsch with all the necessary flavours (for a Koelsch) yet in need of some depths. The absolute crisp-ness is perhaps the strongest point for this ale... That said, I'm grateful for my friend's kindness all the same!!!

A- Golden, good head retention and lacing

S- Nice faint malts with vanilla

T- Maltiness apparent but a bit watery in the balance.

M- Clean, crisp, medium carbonation

D- Nice flavours, but a touch watery lets down the drinkability

Pours a light golden appearance, with light white head and mild carbonation. Not all that impressive, really.

Smells quite hoppy with very German, grassy hops being dominant if not powerful. Slightly herbal, maybe a hint of coriander but not that much. Fairly simple and underwhelming nose.

Taste is not bad, quite a bit of body, interesting palate profile, almost like a perfect bell curve. It ascends very steadily into a quite rich and nice bitter hoppy flavour. Fairly grassy with a strong malt profile underlying it, overall it's a fairly standard flavour, but its strength is in the way it's delivered. I'd say it's very drinkable, although its flavour is not incredible. Just pleasant.

Poured out a golden color with a very white head. The nose offered some grainyness, mild hopping, and nuttyness I more usually associate with alt beers. The taste confirms this, grain, hops, nuts. Good, but out of place here. Has a fairly clean mouthfeel, finishing dry. Very drinkable.

On tap at the Gilden Haus in Köln. Pours a perfectly transparent gold with a nice white head. Little retention and almost no lacing. Smells of hops and pils up front, with a hint of citric sweetness also. The taste is very similar, with the hops dominating, but a bit of sweet citrus in the background. Very good; more to it than other kölsches. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall a great example of a kölsch; probably my favorite of the 7-8 I've tried.

.5L, Germany, best by 3/11.

Crystal-clear pale gold with one of the better heads I've seen on a Kölsch in a while: fluffy, good lace.

Aroma is biscuity, clean and lightly earthy.

Flavor is straightforward. This is a very drinkable Kölsch, though the finish could use some work-- bit of wet cardboard. Biscuity malts, minerals, and grassy, almost citrusy hops. Touch metallic in the end. Good carbonation and light, smooth mouthfeel.

This is a decent Kölsch, especially when you get a fresh bottle as I luckily did. Drinkable.
