Had this on tap tonight at the Draft House here in Austin, TX.

This is a very nice looking beer with very good head retention, good lacing on the glass, and a very nice deep, black rich color and body.

Nose of this brew is not that potent, mostly fresh hops and just a slight hint of toasted malt.

As for taste, this brew is not at all what I expected. I have only tasted one other black lager (Sam Adam's version), and this tastes very different, as it't not nearly as malty. However, just because it wasn't what I expected, doesn't mean this was not a good brew. The beer has a very mild, toasted malt flavor, but clean hops with a medium bitter level that finish very dry and clean are really what dominate this brew.

This is a highly drinkable black lager, as it defenitely won't overwhelm your palatte, but still has a good amount of flavor to it. My only complaint would be the somewhat lack of malt. In my opinion, I would like to taste a little more toasted malt up front for the style, followed by this brew's awesome hop flavor. This is a very refreshing black lager, and is defenitely something I would drink again.

Picked this up while on a recent trip to Germany. I know it's readily available in the states, but I wanted to try a fresh bottle that I know wasn't treated poorly on it's way here.

Pours an almost black, dark brown with a two finger head that settles slowly to a nice layer of foam. The lacing that's left behind is thin and spotty.

Smell; dark roasted malts with a nice bitter coffee presence. There's a touch of chocolate in the aroma, with a little bit of a smokiness going on.

Taste; lots of dark raosted malts as with the aroma, and the coffee is there, only a touch more subdued than I was expecting. That smokiness comes through a bit stronger in the flavor than the nose led me to expect, and finished wit a bit of chocolate, and only a little bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium boded, wih a very good drinkability. It would befinitely be easy to down a few of these.

I've had this beer in the past (just never reviewed), and this is easily the freshest example that I've had. I'm not sure why there are two entries for this. According to my bottle this is still made by Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei GmbH & Co.

Glass - Pint

A - Dark dark brown with a tinge of coppery, ruby color when held to light. Produced an off white pillow of head, about 2fingers thick, with very good retention. Lacing was spotty but very good as well.

S - What I got was very very mild, faint grass upfront with soft roasted malt notes, but more grainy smelling. Hints of a buttery/nut thing going on but that was about all I could pull out.

T - Soft & clean flavors here expected by what the smell put out. Clean grass & nut upfront, touch of buttery flavor fading into finishing flavors, soft roasted malts & subtle toffee. A touch of bitterness from malts & hops are present but very subdued, balancing though.

M - Very very smooth & moderately crisp, around lite bodied. Refreshing feel, I thought it complimented the flavor profile perfectly.

D - This was an extremely quafable brew! I could sit around all evening drinking a 6pack of this beer, I have to say this my first Schwarzbier, so I really don't have a true feel for the style yet, but I really did enjoy this one. I definitely recommend it, I could see myself buying this one again in the future sometime, maybe not worth seeking out in my opinion though.

I'm not going to go into the chocolate, burnt, cherries, kittens and butterflies stuff. Drinking this is fun and it tastes good. It goes down smooth, isn't overly effervescent and I love the aftertaste. It would taste good after mowing the lawn or shoveling snow off the driveway. Say it out loud ... Schwarzbier.

Overall a pretty good brew. Pours a solid black with fair head. Malt flavor dominates without overpowering. I was surprised at how thin it was even compared to others of the style. Faint chocolate, but nothing really stands out. Good beer in large quantities, you won't get tired or burnt out on. Not the best of type, but worth a try.

Now Quaffing: Köstritzer Schwarzbier

This beer was a pleasant change of pace from my recent belgian binge. Pours almost black with a very active off-white head that fills the glass. Aroma is a non-specific sweetness and is very subtle. Pretty light-bodied for a good dark beer and this adds to its drinkability. Taste is sweet with some grains and definite roasted notes. Mouthfeel is smooth with a crisp lager finish, and unlike some other lighter lagers, this one is pretty good at warmer temperatures. I'll be buying this one again.

Black color with red highlights with a thick beige head with good retention and leaving some laces.
Grainy malty aroma with notes of chocolate, mild licorice and lots of dark fruits.
Flavor with lots of chocolate, some spices, cocoa powder, a bit of caramels, a hint of homemade coffee, grains and nuts. Quite dry aftertaste with a bitter roastedness.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Great balance between flavor and drinkability. Definitely a reference for the style. Quite consistent, no disappointments from different batches. Great malt complexity, refreshing and clean taste. If you like the style that is a solid choice.

Thanks to LRM for the trade.

Poured a dark tan, with a huge bubbly head. Nice mouthfeel and carbonation.

Tasted deliciously malty, with some citrus hops thrown in. Still, the overwhelming taste is that of roasted, bitter malt. Clean, very drinkable, not one of my all-time favorites but a very solid beer. Has a hint of sour fruit notes.

500ml into a tulip. Dark brown just shy of black. Puffy three finger foamy head recedes fairly quickly, looks nice. Slightly burnt malt aroma.

Looking at it you'd expect a stout, smelling it you'd expect it to be sweet - it's neither - and it feels thinner than expected as well!

The malt is not too sweet and just a touch of hop bitterness balances the experience, very smooth - this is a good session beer. Most brews this dark are fine at room temp but this doesn't improve with increased temps in fact I think it is best in a relatively narrow (cool cellar) range.

I just re-read the BA description of a Schwarzbier, I think they were drinking this one when they wrote it !

cheers

deep brown near black, one finger creamy tan head, sticky with some lace. Charred and roasted, almost smoke like notes, nutty, burnt malt, toffee and caramel like. Nutty and roasty, lightly astringent but it works, mildly bitter, malty, burnt charcoal like flavours. Nice creamy mouthfeel, med weight, perfect medium carbonation. Really solid stuff, tasty but not filling, great beer for fall/winter and for less than 3 bucks a pint I will pick up more of these.

Appearance: dark brown in color, 1/2 inch head, clear

Smell: nut and toasted malt

Taste: toasted malt, grains, minerals, and small nut, hops are present at the end and in the aftertatse

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, light bodied, sweet start with a small bitter aftertaste, smooth

Drinkability: One of the better in the style I have had. This is a nice change of pace beer for me. Two in a row would be the most I desire, but I love the lightness of this beer.

Pours nearly black with a small off white head. The aroma has strong chocolate and coffee characteristics along with toasted pumpernickle bread. The coffee attributes from the aroma make another appearance in the flavor along with chocolate and a hint of hop flavor at the end. This is a pretty good brew, will be getting this one again.

0.5 l. of good black beer, bought in Germany.

Dark brown, with a thin beige head, good lacing in the glass.
Smell of roasted malts and nuts, a bit of caramel, also some chocolate
Taste was a little less significant. Pleasant of similar notes, but a bit faint.
Light body and good refreshing qualities.

A nice example of the style.

Poured into a chilled tulip glass.

-Appearance 3.5: Ebony black color very smilar to a stout, but with a slight white head. Head was very small, despite my attempts to generate one by tilting the bottle while pouring.

-Smell 4.0: Very nice bouquet, hints of toasted grains mixed with lagery grains and hops. Nice.

-Taste 4.0: Front is slightly sour, but then fades into a familiar lagery graininess. Middle is actually a bit dry with very, very slight hints of toasted grains. Finish is long and complex and the toasted grains really come forward followed by lager sweetness and hoppiness. There is a subtle dryness here that is refreshing. Aftertaste is all smoky grains and malt with a slight hop return. Everything is balanced and restrained and elegant.

-Mouthfeel 3.5: Standard lager carbonation, very refreshing.

-Overall 4.0: I have tried many Black Lagers and Koerstritzer is head and shoulders over all of them. This brew is a wonderful mix of lager elements, but with the slight addition of smoky grains and the larger barley middle of a stout or porter. This beer is balanced and never over the top. Other Black Lagers would do well to study this unique balance. Recommended.

A: A very dark beer with rich carbonation, head is not very large but is well formed for a creamy consistency and slow dissipation, retention on the glass is good, a lot of traces still on the glass after time, permanent layer is always on top and it is a little thinker than usual.

S: Toasted malts are clearly noticed strong malty backbone forms the aroma of this beer.

T: Intense flavor with lots of toasted malts, barley is totally present and also hops can be detected.

M: Sensation is well balanced starting neutral and ending with little bitterness, sensation also lasts on the mouth after ending.

Aroma: Yeasty alcohol smell with an undercurrent of dark roasted malts. No noticeable hops
Appearance: Dark as night. At the corner of the top I can make out the slightest bit of, no, it’s black as night. Head was active but settled down to a thin coating of small darker suds.
Flavor: Very smooth. Taste is actually milder than expected given the color and smell. The balance is on the malt side, but not sticky sweet. Just enough hops to bring it to the middle. The roasted malt comes through strongest in the aftertaste, a hint of chocolate malt (not brewers chocolate).
Mouthfeel: Coats the mouth for a lasting pleasant aftertaste. Low carbonation and I experienced little warming.
Overall Impression: My first taste of a “black beer”. Found it much more drinkable than I expected. Smooth, complex, satisfying. I could see this as a starting point for exploring dark beers.
