A-Drank this eastern German classic often while staying in Dresden last summer. Lovely looking beer, with the typically German huge blooming, long lasting head--which leaves lacing on the glass as you drink. Has a very deep brown color, fully black unless you hold it up to the light.

S-Has a nice VERY DARK chocolate malty nose, with no apparent hops in the aroma

T-Lovely dry smooth taste--if you closed your eyes you would not know it was black, you may guess it was a light amber. They call this a "black pils" and that is about as good a description as any. The dark malt just makes this lager more interesting than just about any other lager. VERY well balanced between the gently roasted (and completely un-bitter) malt, and the noble hops. Leaves a clean, typically German hop aftertaste. Made just outside of Leipzig, and supposedly the poet Goethe's favorite beer. What a classic Türinger style!

M-Has the mouthfeel of a lighter beer, like a pils or Munich Helles. Crisp, and light--very unlike say a stout or porter.

D-Like most German lagers this is very drinkable--a nice session beer--you can sit all night having them with your friends (at the right bar...). Not filling--the only thing super dark is the color.

This beer pours clear black with a nice one finger head that fades to a nice full ring and a cap in the center with delicate lacing. Very attractive!

The aroma comes across to me as straightforwardly caramel malty and some fruity notes like raisins and some light floral hops. Gorgeous!

The beer tastes pretty much the same. It starts off lightly caramel malty sweet and stays that way through the sip with some very mild raisin or prune notes along for the ride and finally it finishes with only the tiniest of hop bitterness, dryness and black pepperiness. LOL It's well balanced. A little roastiness comes through just as you are about to take another sip. WOW!

The mouthfeel is creamy and smoothly sweet with light body and moderate to light carbonation making this beer very easy to drink! It has a slightly dry finish.

Overall, I am going to have to concur with the BA guys and conclude that this is world class. It was a pleasure to drink and I really can't find any fault with it at all! It's light enough that the sweetness is not annoying and it serves to balance it also. 5 out of 5! Highly recommended!

Look - Dark and frothy
Smell - very good, chocolate, coffee hints
Taste - excellent, slight sweetness, mildly hoppy but no bitter after taste.
Feel - Very easy to drink. Like a lighter Guinness stout...
Overall - a great beer.

First time to try. I'll be getting it again...

AWEEEEEEEEEESOME! My favorite style of beer for sure. The only other Schwarzbier I've had is black forest by Saranac, and this is better in all areas - and that is a great beer. Was really lucky to find a four pack of this for $5.99!!!

16.9 oz. can poured into pilsener
(3/12/2015 born on date; best by 3/12/2016, printed on bottom of can)

L: clear dark brown with lots of amber, pushes up a 3/4-inch head of offwhite/beige foam, no stick; keeps a little collar of beige foam; dark enough that it's hard to see what's going on in the glass, but the clarity is fantastic

S: sweet chocolate ... a buttery chocolate donut; even some dark dried fruits, dates, real sweet dates

T: chocolate ... so dark-malty sweet; some slightly toasted oak wood, far from burnt but there's a little char-wood taste; as the palate adjusts, a nice earthy flavor offers a little balance to the big sweet malt flavor; the back-end wood flavor is like a great jazz drummer, always right on time; boy, that chocolate sweetness is for real ... it shows up in a big way at times and always right up front, leading off a swallow and perfectly setting up that woody/earthy aftertaste ... what a beer!

F: perfect ... lager crisp, light, easy drinking but with enough heft to remind you it's not water

O: this beer is so good; plenty of dark-malt flavors including chocolate and that nicely toasted wood, some balancing earthiness, and the mouthfeel makes me want to drink more and more and more ... I will buy this beer almost as often as I can find it and drink it year-round, for any and all weather and occasion; I've been looking for the ultimate dark-malt session brew, and this is it.
