A: crystal clear; deep brown - lighter at the edges, but no ruby - just a lighter brown; 1 finger light brown head that receded quickly to a thin collar;

S: molasses with deeply roasted grain; slightly sweet;

T: follows the nose up front; by mid-palate, it's like bittersweet chocolate; that stays through the finish, which is slightly bitter;

M: thin; light to moderate carbonation; if you give it a minute, the finish dries out nicely;

O: I was hoping for a little hop presence; the best by date is 7/15, so it can't be too old; other than that, I thought it was true to the style;

500 ml bottle from LCB0 for $2.80 CDN into a pint glass.

Appearance - Nearly black as night, however just less than a finger of head was yielded despite a fairly aggressive pour. Nonetheless the beer looks promising and imposing at the same time. The 3/4 finger of off tan head leaves significant lacing around the glass.

Smell- Dark roasted malts, specifically coffee and biscuity goodness is picked up.

Taste - Similar to the smell, dark roasted malts are again the hero, maybe some lighter malts touches like caramel or toffee in the background. A bit sweeter than expected given the ominous black pour.

Mouthfeel - Smooth again much lighter than one would expect from a beer that shade of black. Carbonation is moderate and would harmoniously with the beer to an even greater extent than would be expected.

Overall - This is one of those beers that is enjoyable, not too pretentious in what it is trying to be, and is just a really solid, delicious beer.

A - Poured from the brown bottle into a clear pint glass. Best before date of 9/23/10 on the back label. The body of this brew is a clear dark in color topped by a yummy looking tan 3 finger head (OK, I poured it rather vigorously). Excellent head retention and some spotty sticky lacing.

S - Sweet malt aroma with hints of buttery diacetyl on the back end. Not overly aromatic.

T & M - The taste certainly outperforms the aroma. The main character in the brew is a roasted malt flavor accented by hints of caramel and maybe a touch of dark fruit (though very slight). It finishes with a slight hop bitterness to balance things out. Very dry and clean after the swallow.

D - If it weren't for the high cost (it is a German import) this would be a session brew that I would buy by the 6 pack. For the low ABV, this is one brew that does not disappoint in terms of flavor. An excellent example of the style!

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma has some chocolate and roasted malt notes, as well as some grain. The flavor is nice, with some lightly roasted malts and cocoa notes. There is also some sweetness from the malt, as well as some grass and earth notes from the hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

This is my first sample of the style so I'll reserve giving it higher than a 4 until I try some other examples, but if all of them are this good, I will really like the style. The generic style description claims that the bitterness in Schwarzbier comes from hops, but in all honesty I'm not a huge hops fan and I don't taste a whole lot of hops in this. The bitterness is definitely a malt bitterness, but it's not in the least bit heavy or filling.
