Very attractive beer coming out of the bottle. Jet black in the center, with only slightly lighter browns at the edges, atop which sits a head of fluffy taupe foam. Bready aroma with hints of sweet malts underneath. What I will call the "brown bread crust" aspect of the aroma is gorgeous. On the palate, doughy right off the bat and very dry. Roasted malts come out to play next, displaying pronounced malt bitterness. No sweetness comes out in this beer at all. The finish is bone dry and very long. Mouthfeel is huge for such a low gravity beer, thanks mainly to the effervescence of the carbonation. This is one excellent schwarzbier. It could use some more complexity, maybe some nice coffee notes, in the palate, but the flavors that are here are sublime. It's also uncompromisingly dry, which I like. Awesome stuff.

Presentation: 12oz brown pop top bottle with an old-fashioned, kinda creepy looking guy on the label...no freshness date to be found

Appearance: Dark brown/black beer with a creamy ivory cap with good retention

Smell: Mild, toasty malts with a touch of roasted grains...this is smooth and simple, not a lot going on, but pleasant

Taste: Nice toasty and very light roasted grains, a light minerality on the clean finish...again, very simple, but nice

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium-bodied

Drinkability: Medium-high

Conclusion: Tasty, drinkable black lager...this is a bit simple, but a nice dark German quaffable beer.

Bought locally (Grapevine refrigerated shelves), a few days in the fridge.

The head is very big. It's beige and foamy. It collapses unevenly: pillowy. Sticky thin lacing. The body of the beer seems black, but it's fully garnet against the light. I smell sour toffee and nuts. The taste is a little dusty in the front, with some corn syrup. A watery, thin middle shows a little tang, but there's the corn syrup again. The finish is bitter, darkish, slight. Again, there's some water and corn syrup.

I think this is what a black NA would taste like!

Black with dark mahogany highlights. Mild to moderate sized head, brown and bubbly.

Sweet fruit, grape/apple, and soft caramel. Tart/bitter edge with roasted/toasted vibe.

Smooth and thick delivery of ripe fruity bready malt and then flowery hop. Toasty light caramel body. Rounds out with a little tart pucker, giving it a nice grape vibe. Deeper are dry chocolate and roasted flavors. Finishes bitter and fairly dry.

Deep and complex brew. Nicely balanced. Exemplifies the style nicely.

Tall, skinny brown long-neck with three foiled labels and a bottling/freshness code notched (A,5) on the rear label. It pours a nearly black, brown with a finger of greyish-tan froth.

The smell of this brew is what really liked about it...sweetish malt stands out with some earth and a kind of must, along with some wood notes. Just a light malty sweetness that begs too be drunk.

Lightly roasty malt with mild sweetness and oaky flavors prevail. Almost nutty at times with a good carbonation and just enough hoppiness to balance things to a "T". Clean on the finish.

Light-medium in body with the alcohol seeming non-existant, giving this brew extremely good drinkability. Very enjoyable Schwarz, one of the best I've tasted.

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a standard pint glass. No indication off when this beer was brewed.

Appearance: Pours with big 1-2 inch, foamy, light-tan head. Tis slowly settles in a thin coating of foam, leaving a decent amount of Belgian lacing. The beer itlsef is black and opaque, with hints of brown around the edges.

Smell: Botter roasted malt and a slight residual sweetness.

Taste: Tastes of slightly bitter malt (black patent?) and chocolate. Smooth with very little hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Good body.

Drinkability: As with most black lagers, a very easy drinking beer.

This beer pours a dark red. It is slightly brown. The head is light brown. It is very thick. It fades slowly, leaving thick laces.

This beer has a toasted malt aroma. It smells very slightly nutty. It has a slight caramel aroma also. The hop aroma is small.

This beer thasts nutty. Also, I taste some toasted malts. Caramel flavor is present. Hop flavor is minimal, but still present.

This beer is very smooth and crisp. It leaves a sweet malty aftetaste. It is carbonated well.

I think this beer would be a good session beer. Low alcohol, and a mild flavor make it easy to enjoy.

Love black lagers let's give this one a whirl. Popping the top I get a waft of Milo or Quick for the layman, delicious like chocolate milk. Pours to a barely translucent black with a thin quick head. Taste is a complex mix of roasted malts and chocolate with only a zestiness contributed by hops. Finish is dry and clean. Mouthfeel is excellent. This is one of the best black lagers I have had to date. On the second pour from the 1/2 liter can I got a two finger head, still recedes quickly but I'm upgrading the appearance

Poured a black as coal colour with a single finger tan crown that quickly disapated leaving a very tiny center lace and glass ring. Carbonation is subtle.
The body is full and the aroma has a fragrant flowery odour initially but do not hesitate or you will miss it.
The taste starts with a slight bitterness and finishes the same, also
a nut like presence.
Very nice.

Pours a deep cola brown color with a fluffy khaki colored head. Roasty, toasty Munich malt character and suggestions of pumpernickel bread with a slight bit of low-alpha hops nearer the end of the whiff, which can come across as being vegetal at times. Very roasty in flavor without being over-the-top, thin but not too thin. Clean tasting and effervescent, a thoroughly drinkable black lager. It has been years since I had one, now I remember why I used to buy this by the case. A simple beer with a lot of flavor and a delicate balance. Recommended.
