Pours well, and there's a good balance between the different flavors in the beer. However, it's overall too watery, and those flavors aren't fleshed out enough to actually be enjoyable.

Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei GmbH & Co. "Köstritzer Schwarzbier"
11.2 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST BEFORE : 11 29 2018 L 3 48 P" and sampled on 04 27 2018
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Another beer that's slipped away from. I've had Köstritzer Schwarzbier many times before, however, at least this time I know I've got a fresh example. It's black in the glass beneath a frothy head of tan that seems to be holding quite well, and it's left some very nice lacing where it's already dropped. When held to the light you can see that it's actually a clear, dark, ruby-accented mahogany brown. The aroma expresses dark caramel and the suggestion of dark chocolate and roastiness. The same is true of the flavor and it's very interesting. The caramel is clearly there but the chocolate and roastiness are almost like ghosts. It's certainly unique as there's nothing that really comes close to it, not dark milds or porters or stouts. It's mildly bitter and there's just a kiss of noble hops in there. For such a dark beer it's really subtle across the board, and therein lies it's greatness - it's very accessible and easy to drink while at the same time delivering enough delightfully dark and just lightly sweetish caramel that you keep wanting to go back for another sip. It's a balancing act, and a magic trick as well because although you've got some nice, dark, sweetish malt upfront it then magically disappears in the finish with only a reminder and that ghostly roastiness lingering. Most of the schwarzbiers I've tasted, particularly American made versions, go too heavy - it's a dark lager, just one that has a little bit more character than say, Heineken Dark. It's really a classic of the style, and so keep in mind that that's how I'm rating it, against what could be the "perfect" schwarzbier, not agains all of the other beers of the world. Well worth trying!

Poured from 330ml bottle into glass. Best by date on label is stamped '08.21.2018'.
Dark brown body, with ruby highlights. Minimal khaki head settles to scattered islands and ring. No lacing.
Faint aroma but quite a bit there. Roasted malt with a bit of char, dark chocolate, coffee, and candied dark fruit.
Taste is malty and dark, like pumpernickel bread, Coffee and dark chocolate appear late. Has some of the sweetness of fruity hops.
Thinner mouth feel. Just a hint of bitterness from the dark malts.
Well brewed, easy to drink, but without any outstanding aspects.

Look: It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is good.

Smell: There is a sweet aroma. A bit of caramel with coffee.

Taste: It has a dark caramel flavor that is a bit sweet with some coffee. There are low spicy notes in the background.

Feel: It has a moderate body. The sweetness last into the finish. It is smooth.

Overall, this is highlighted by the dark caramel flavors with the spiciness. The coffee is mostly in the background.

L: pours dark but not black, but it's black in the glass with a filmography khaki head
S: smells very much like raw ingredients with a lot of malt.
T: just like the nose with a underwhelming flavor profile. This is a bitter sweet beer.
F: thin but a bit syrupy, smooth but with a little bitterness.

Canned 8/18/17; drank 3/28/18 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge, noisy khaki head; strong, frothy lace.

Sourdough bread, root beer, mild cream & lager yeast notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Root beer, black coffee & mild cream flavors up front; sourdough bread notes on the finish.

Bold & interesting; I'm not much of a lager fan but this was better than expected.

Look: As black as coffee, with an off-white head of foam. Amber lights glint in the sun at the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Sourdough bread.

Taste: Bitter bread, like biting into a fresh roll as the aftertaste of beer sits in your mouth.

Mouthfeel: Creamy thick.

Overall: One of my go-to German restaurant beers. Very different from the lagers everyone drinks while still tasting nice.

Poured from fridge temp but allowed to warm. Pours jet black with a good amount of head. Nose is roasted malts, wood, and a bit of smoke. Taste follows the nose. Very smooth, roasty notes. Not too bitter or sweet - really balanced and tasty. Maybe a bit of burnt sugar in there. Mouthfeel is pretty creamy. Overall, a great beer.

Now THIS is a great beer! Most of the stuff I drink is cheap swill, but not Kostritzer. I discovered this a few years ago and have kept my eye out for it, when all of a sudden it appeared on the shelves of my local grocery store.

This is a disappointing schwarzbier folks. I usually like these styles of beer that I have, but this one just misses the mark. I don't know how to explain it. You have to try some schwarzbiers for yourself to figure it out. There is a freshness date on my box so I know it's not too old. I don't know how people can rate this beer so high. I don't know maybe there is something wrong with my mouth. Cheers! C- (70-74) score range

Dark colour with red tones to the light, medium head with short retention, normal lace.
Aroma of chocolate, red fruits, a bit smokey, malts.
Full body, viscose texture, normal carbonation. Sweet finish.
Taste of chocolate, coffee notes, red fruits, caramel and a bit smokey too.
Good drink.

16.9 oz can, packaged on 6/24/17, best before 6/24/18.

Very dark brown, almost black, with a big, creamy, light tan head. Patchy lacing on the glass. Roasted malt aroma that had a bit of a soapiness to it, which was kind of odd. It wasn't overpowering though so it didn't detract from the beer. Clean chocolate and roasted malt flavor. Bitter finish that is more the result of the roasted malt than the hops. Medium bodied. A straightforward, easy drinking, dark German Bier.
