Lighter and "thinner" than I would have thought. Very drinkable, but I was looking for more bitterness.

This black lager pours unsurprisingly a black color with a thin tan head. The smell is very mild, but malty. The body is medium as schwarzbiers typically are. The flavor is of roasted barley with a mild dark chocolate flavor, a little acidity and a fairly mild but noticeable hop profile. The finish is very crisp and very slightly dry. This is a very simple beer, but it’s well done and what flavors are there are very clean and well balanced. Schwarzbiers in general are not the most exciting style to me, but this is really nicely executed and there really isn’t anything I can say negative about it. This would make a good session beer for someone who prefers a little heavier body than your typical pale ale, saison, etc.

Poured into flute glass. Not much head if poured slowly, fizzes down to narrow, faint rim.

Malt, very faint roast.

Nice roasted character. Not overly complex, but very pleasing. Chocolate, rye toast.

Mostly smooth mouth.

For lovers of Dunkel Lager, Dry Irish Stouts, Porters, Old Ale, rye lager, and, of course schwarzbier.

Aroma of roasted grains, burnt toast, fruity and herbal hops. Something mineral about it. A hint of earthiness. Bready.

Pours pretty much black with a hint of dark amber highlights and a decent sized light tan head with decent retention and good lacing.

Very rich and malty upfront washing away quite clean. Toasted, almost burnt flavors. A hint of blueberry. Bracing and steely bitterness. Very balanced and surprisingly pretty refreshing.

Medium full mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Dry and bracing. Somewhat silky but also has a bite to it.

Incredibly balanced and pretty refreshing. Plenty of roast character without feeling heavy or sweet.

from a single into a willi becher. Haven't had this one in ages, so... Two things stand out: the dark pumpernickel rye notes, that are consistent throughout and delicious and really hold any kind of sweetness at bay, and how light and crisp the body is. Very happy to revisit. One of these days it would be good to do a side-by-side with the locals (Bauhaus and Schell's, among others).
