Are you from New England? A fan of the Boston sports teams? If you are visiting from New England or are a permanent Los Angeles county transplant, then friendly east coasters and a chance to scream "Yankees Suck!" at the top of your lungs, (even if the yankees are not playing), can be found on the west coast at Sonny McLean's.

A very traditional sports bar with a laid back atmoshphere. Somewhat dimly lit and plenty of deep hard wood. There are two main rooms to this pub. The dining area is made up of wooden picnic style tables and benches, booths and a few round high tables and chairs. A ledge across the room with stools separates the medium sized wooden bar from the dining area. The other main room has a pool table and a few dart boards. Up a small flight of stairs there is a designated area with a large table for a group of people. Further back there is a small area with a basketball game and a video game. The walls are covered with Boston sports teams parafinailia. Banners, posters, mirrors and above the bar are many classic and new photographs of famous athletes who played for Boston teams. There are t.v.s everywhere. No sports goes unwatched especially if the team happens to play for Boston. If you like sports and want a comfortable atmoshphere this is a good place to visit.

Most of the people who frequent this pub are from the east coast and are generally fans of Boston sports teams. Locals do make this place their hang out but I think it is usually full of transplanted New Englanders. I have been here a few times with my buddies who are transplants from New England and we always have a good time. When a Boston team is in the playoffs a person has to get here early. Hours early. The crowd is lively and they do enjoy a competative sporting event. It can get quite loud in here during the games and will be standing room only.

The food is pretty average. I have not eaten too many things from the menu but I can't give the food great marks. The fish n' chips were pretty bland. The onion rings were fair. Portions are ample. I hear they do a decent burger. Pretty standard pub grub. They do have clam chowder but I have yet to try it. The menu could use a little less frozen and a bit of spice to it.

The service was very good. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive despite being the only waitress working that afternoon. They serve wine but not spirits.

The beer selection is okay. Good enough for people to find a beer they like but not more than a couple. About thirty taps. They list the beers on their website so I will give a short list. Guinness, Smithwick's ale, Anderson Valley Boont, Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, Red Hook IPA, Widmer, a couple of German beers and some ciders. Not much in the form of Belgians and the bottle list is very weak. Pretty standard list all around.

This is a very friendly pub and a very fun place to hang out especially for sports fans. The owners and clientele love their Boston teams. I do not think I have ever seen a person dare to don a Yankee's jersey in this pub. I recommend the place for sports, the people and not the depth of the beer menu.

Note: When Boston sports teams are in town Sonny's sets up bus trips to the games. Red Sox vs. Angels or Dodgers(if interleague play happens that year), and Patriots vs. Chargers. I don't know if they do Celtics or Bruins. I hear these trips are pretty, shall we say, 'exuberant?' Damn super charged crazy is better.
