Ithaca beer has created a unique interpretation on the oatmeal stout that I think is dynamic and very well done. They are adding all kinds of stuff to this style that traditionally does not have many specialty additions and with some unique and delightful results. They are adding coffee beans from Ithaca's very own gimme coffee. Coffee has a palate and a terroir very much like hops. It can be citrusy or winey, mellow or bold, nutty or earthy. In this beer Ithaca said they wanted to show you the herbal quality of the coffee bean. The hops are East Kent Goldings which is a very herbal hop that offers honey, lemon, thyme, earth and floral. And Challenger which offers green tea and floral; and if used a late edition hop a crisp fruitiness. They are adding white wheat malt which gives fullness to the bdoy of the beer and improves head retention.

The pour is black not brown with a ruby hue that can just be seen. It gives to the minds eye the color of a roasted coffee bean. The head is just tan and tall with some soapy bubbles from the oats and lots of creaminess from the white wheat. It falls slowly clinging and is not oily looking at all. Exceptional appearance.

Nose is vibrant with earth and a bracing herbal scent of coffee. The hops are like honey, and crisp like a flower petal, a light fresh sweetness. There is a boldness to the coffee that is roasty but not too dark or burnt. Cold it smells like cold coffee with a tempting bit of herbal sweet honey. A very unique interpretation on the style.

The drink is smooth and even though the malt imparts fullness it does not give any heaviness. These oats show no astringency in the finish, they temper the wheat breaddiness to a soft fullness. The earth in this beer is dynamic and complex. It's hard to describe. Cold it is a bracing shot of herbal coffee but as it warms it mellows to the traditional lightness and clear flavors of the oatmeal stout. Hops are vibrant in this beer but never overdone. The balance is exquisite as to show everything they have , except fruit. GOOD! The crispness they offer balances the herbal from the coffee bean as it also stays green and does not really show citrus or astringency. The bitterness they give is just enough and does not strip any of the flavor form this beer as it finishes bold. It's like a crisp flower petal, it's earthy. It has all the demure softness of oats and the lightness they give too. Warmer, that herbal softens as well and a roastiness comes forward to show you glimpses of nuts and even sweeter earth.

This beer was exceptional. Unique and I would say that Ithaca has quite an affinity for coffee.

Pours a dark brown, nearly black color. Tan head forms and has OK staying power, eventually lacing most the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee, simple and pleasant. The flavor has more of the same, coffee and roasted malts. Balanced and pretty nice. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Pretty damn good coffee oatmeal stout here.

Pours a dark brown color with a finger of beige head. The nose has a touch of coffee and some roast. The flavor follows the nose and the body is nicely rich.

I am continuing my latest horizontal as a part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody with this one, followed by about six more Ithaca offerings.

From the bottle: Nada. I am not a fan of their no longer putting the ABV on the labels. I dig the minimalist look of the new labels, but less is not always more.

I am kind of surprised by the relatively low ABV on this one, but as long as it is correct, it becomes the next one in ascending order.

I began with a Pop! of the cap and since the Stouts generally put on a good show, I went with a heavy-handed pour. Another surprise as I did not get as extended a pseudo-cascade as I usually do. Instead, two fingers of foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head formed briefly and quickly fell away. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose smelled of burnt charcoal, dark chocolate, light smoke and dark roasted coffee. Oh, man, I love to drink coffee in the morning! I am a retired U. S. Navy sailor & coffee was the fuel that kept us going. Navy Joe Coffee now offers JP-5 blend, an homage to jet fuel, just to give you an idea! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite achieving creaminess, but coming pretty close. The taste was not quite as bitter as I expected from the inclusion of Sumatran coffee, but instead, it had a biscuity/bready quality, which combined with the dark chocolatiness, made me think of a rich, dark chocolate brownie! A brownie with coffee?!? I am sooo hungry all of a sudden! Finish was semi-sweet, a nice combination of bittersweet chocolate and dark roasted coffee. It would probably work best as a dessert beer, but since I am a hophead and not a Stout lover, what do I know? YMMV.

This had a black body and came with a small off-white head.

The nose is a balance of roasty malt and fresh ground coffee. The taste is a bit more unbalanced, which suits me fine. Roasty malt with faint chocolate give way to a strong, fresh brewed coffee finish. Even for a small stout the body is a bit thin. A borderline sessionable stout as tasty as this is a real treat.

Fine to start but the after taste is a bit burnt. Def. not on par with what I've come to expect from Ithaca.

Super smooth stout reminiscent of my old favorite, Beamish from Ireland. RIch roasted malt with notes of coffee and chocolate. Everything to like with nothing to detract. Why not distribute this in widget cans? I would buy it by the case.

Pours black as night with a coffee colored head with good retention.

Smells largely of coffee with chocolate notes, nutty, dark bread, fig.

Big bitter chocolate and coffee notes with sweet rich roasted malt with fig and plumb notes.

Drags a bit on the palate.

Brief impressions from a bottle:

Love the creamy chocolate presence even if it does drift a bit sweet. Roasted barley presence is a bit lacking. Dark malts fill out the body neatly.

Boasts a smooth wet medium-bodied mouthfeel that gives it a comforting pleasant presence on the palate.

It's a solid drinkable oatmeal stout, and will have no trouble bumping elbows with competitors like Troeg's.

I really like the coffee choice and hop component. I wish it had a little more ABV and more lactose. The bottles and six packs were not labeled with ABV and with a name like Super Stout I feel misled. They should have named it Sumatra session ale.
