Turning up just as temperatures begin to drop, this bold porter is black in color with walnut brown highlights and a dense cap of foam. Chocolate and a subtle molasses sweetness stand out in the nose, supported by plenty of deep aromas of roasted malts. Bittersweet dark chocolate returns in the first sip, along with a rye spiciness that builds somewhat in the finish. Creamy and full-bodied, Embrr approaches Stout territory in more ways than one and will serve as a welcome addition to Ithaca's seasonal lineup.

Pours into a becker a deep dark walnut brown with a creamy half finger beige head atop.Mild chocolate and earth in the nose, not much rye is detected.Very roasted and earthy on the palate with the rye coming in late giving a bit of a sharp punch, some brown sugar and caramel sweets sets in more as I drink more. Not a bad porter, the roast is big but the rye could be a little bit bigger.

Dark brown and opaque with a low head of beige foam that settles out quickly. Extremely low aroma of chalk and toasted malt.

Flavor of darkly toasted malt, not roasty, some rye notes, mild hop florals, faint cocoa and cola.

Interesting mouthfeel, rich and creamy, almost feels like nitro. Must be the contribution of the rye.

Not as dark as I was thinking. Good for Ithaca but doesn't really hold up compared to other breweries.

Appears pitch black with cola highlights and light khaki head, forms nicely even speckled lacing left behind very good looking brew. Aroma has spicy dark roasts and that's about it, dark chocolate a bit of mild smoke character but no heavy smoked meat or extreme notes. Flavor super dry slightly smoked rye porter, spicy edges dark chocolate, everything to dry the palate out with a bit of espresso in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to full not a bad beer at all, well crafted across the board but nothing that draws me in like Fresh Flower Power. Carbonation is moderate works well in this big porter. Overall impressive new seasonal much better than some of the Ithaca winter releases in the past!

DATE TASTED: February 4, 2016... GLASSWARE: Samuel Smith pint.. OCCASION: prepping for some snow tomorrow, and a Friday at that... APPEARANCE: dark black body that a thin, grey head that bubbles and flattens to a consistently hazy lid... AROMA: malts occur in the form of cereal and roasted dough... the rye offers a spiciness akin to pepper...chocolate and anise also suggest a complex pint ... PALATE: smooth up front, slick but medium-bodied overall, with a spicy tingle late through the throat... easy sipping and agreeable ... TASTE: a roasted, sweetly malted experience, with chocolate and licorice present as well... OVERALL: I like the title of this beer, evoking the roasted, warming aspects I hoped for... formidable yet accessible... at 6.6% ABV, a standalone or a sessionable...another quality Ithaca offering, with enough spice to separate it from the average porter...

Ithaca Beer Company "Embrr"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, production coded but not freshness dated

Very nicely rounded and polished rye porter with a pleasant touch of yeasty fruitiness. Personally I could go for a little more rye character, a little bit of spice - not that it's not there, because there is some - but just a little bit more. On the other hand I have to wonder if that wouldn't throw off the almost perfectly drinkable balance? Rather than find out, I'll go with it as-is. Quite nice, and very well done. Worth checking out.

Quick notes:

Chocolate and coffee; it's almost a miniature version of Founders Breakfast Stout, with big notes of both up front, a nice balanced bitterness, a spicy rye kick, and a roasty quality to the malt. Hops are just enough to balance it out, keeping it from being too sweet, without adding any unnecessary hop flavor.

This might be a very good Winter stout/porter, especially if you're looking for something with a lot of flavor but on the lower ABV end for the style.

A fine Porter with strong rye flavor, this remains smooth and intensely flavorful to the end.
