A beautiful dark gold almost clear beer sports a brief off white cap that finally gives way to clear sailing, atop a thickish looking elixir.

That smell of deep sweet and dank bitter Ithaca cranks naturally toward nowadays, hints of floral and citrus also. Light aroma, kinda simple and nice.

This is a beer that changes character amazingly on its way to room temp. It started as a bitter pith and neutral sweet kinda beer, but now at room temp it is hitting its stride. I get a beautiful mix of flavors not evident earlier, well blended citrus, tropical fruit, floral, and bitter has stepped back to a solid player to dry this out well. Next one gets popped at room temp.

Easy drinking, probably this beer's best feature, low carb, and medium viscosity with clean finish is what does it. Digging this mouthfeel.

Excellent beer I suggest enjoying on the warmer side. Really well done, surprised me.

Pours a murky amber hue with a big creamy textured cream colored off white head, fine thick banded lacing...looks great in the chalice.

Aroma has a slightly funky rye spiciness that just works right off the bat a bit of caramel malt as well kicking through there. Dark pine and citrus notes in there bringing the hop notes to the forefront much better executed than last years bigger cascazilla.

Flavor has a chewy rye body really adding to the complexity of the beer fading citric pine hops with each sip almost overshadowed by the the big rye additions.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied even soft carbonation slightly slick with hop resins.

Overall, great lineup in the box of hops the freshest Flower Power you'll find the great Dark Vine black IPA, the Creeker is back and just as good, plus this you will be thrilled with a purchase of the Box of Hops sampler from Ithaca!

DATE TASTED: January 3, 2015... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... OCCASION: recovering from the first Quiz Bowl competition of the season... APPEARANCE: appropriate amber brown body with nice activity inside; slightly creamy, off-white head that laces sufficiently; grows more appreciably as the drinking continues ... AROMA: mellow rye with strong melon; dampened malts do not suggest much else beyond lemon grass, despite the spices suggested by the aroma... PALATE: medium-bodied, effervescent, and active all around the mouth--the tongue, teeth and throat are all buzzed by the vitality of this ale...TASTE: dry, almost mellow, yet paradoxically tart with some citric notes--the majority of the taste is subdued by blanketing malts and some nondescript funk, a gray noise to the tastebuds... OVERALL: coming in fourth in the Box of Hops is not really a loss, but in the case...of the case, well the inconsistency of this experience is unlike the other three; what's more, what seems to produce the enjoyment--its busy mouthfeel--is a direct result of its muddled rye/IPA cohabitation...the label claims this is "fun," and in a way, it is, but I cannot see myself seeking out this beer in the future and would here petition Ithaca to think of a fourth, worthy companion to Flower Power, Creeker and Dark Vine...

Just a touch more than a finger's worth of slightly late to develop crisp light khaki colored froth comprised of mostly big chunky bubbles... Decent retention gives way to a full and even lacing... The color is a pale amber with some light copper undertones which appears lighter at the bottom of the glass and darker towards the top... A limited bit of moderate paced carbonation... A bit of lacing clings to the sides of the glass... The nose starts with a big earthy hop bite... Light floral notes as well... A strong malt base of cracker and biscuit... Robust flavor profile... Starts with a good hop kick before rounding out nicely... A good mix of piney, earthy and floral hops... This sits atop a strong malt base dominated by biscuit and cracker... The rye component is present, but buried way beneath the surface... On the light side of medium bodied... Starts full and lush before turning substantially more delicate... Light carbonation... Smooth... Slightly sleek... This is a nifty little beer that hides the 7.2% ABV rather well... Overall this one proves to be a bit more than the sum of its parts... I could enjoy a couple of this in a sitting... A nice welcome to Ithaca's new box of hops... I'm also digging the new branding on the labels... I dig it...

Bottles purchased at My Buddy Joe's in Canandaigua, NY.

Pours a dark amber gold, with a small, quarter inch white head, and some solid lacing towards the top of the glass.

Smells like spicy, wet grass, husky rye, grapefruit, orange, and caramel malt.

The taste is very similar. This is quite earthy and spicy, some rye and black pepper, with grapefruit, orange, and a bit of peach, dank, and moderately bitter. The malt backbone is fairly prominent, lil bit sweet, some toasted bread, keeps it hefty and warming.

This has a nicely creamy, slightly viscous mouthfeel, but juicy on the back end- very drinkable, and easy to get down. The glass was gone before I really knew it.

A really nice effort from Ithaca, and miles better than Double Zilla last year.

A: The beer is hazy orange amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation along with lots of fine particles visible floating in suspension. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that died down, leaving specks of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of pine resin hops are present in the nose along with hints of caramel malts.
T: Much like the smell, the taste starts out with flavors of pine resin hops but the finish has additional notes of spicy rye. There are also hints of underlying caramel malts; the hops contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness. No sweetness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The hops and rye tingle your tongue a little bit.
O: The finish of this beer has a very nice balance between flavors of pine resin and rye. It's a good hybrid between an IPA and a rye beer. Notes of alcohol become noticeable once the beer warms up.

Balance just isn't quite there. The red ale and the rye could mesh better. Then at the same time the citrus and hop flavors

An interesting take on the red IPA style. Roasted malts and citrusy hops.
