Ithaca Beer Company Java Power From The 2015 Box of Hops

Pours a sick looking, thick looking color orange yellow depending on the light . Crud like floaters in it. Off white head of foam that's creamy and clings well. The big snow globe size stuff is even in the head. Very poor appearance.

Nose is a big citrusy scent and some very fresh coffee. Fragrant and even though the coffee continues to deepen on the nose the citrus never backs down. Earthy roasty coffee. Rich without bitterness. It even shows a touch of chocolate. The malt is like a thin crystalized honey in the background that helps give the impression of cookie dough to this scent. Very floral hop with a firm herbal note.

Taste is smooth and full of textures. The malt gives a soft medium mouthfeel. Sugary dryness. Hops are vibrant and citrusy. Coffee is rich but never fully dominates. Caramel. Finishes dry and with a bitterness that lingers long and quite strong but does not let one moment of flavor escape. Very good aftertaste is like orange juice and coffee. Nutty a faint little bit as it warms with caramel.

This was one of the boldest combinations of flavors in the Box of Hops this year. I think the fresh coffee scent and flavor is marvelous. It's a lush and very heady experience. The flavor of the coffee is so intense it's colorful. Like berries, reds and browns. You can almost feel it blacken as it roasts and becomes fragrant and dry. The light chocolate is all about the palate that coffee actually has to offer than can range from chocolates and earth to citrusy or even caramel and nutty. So showing it off in the beer was about a successful duet and Ithaca did that with a malt that warmed to show what the coffee had to offer as well. I like how the freshness of this simply added brightness throughout and how herbal qualities from hops really compliment the finish. Attention to detail, timing, control over ingredients. Orange can be a light tropical quality, so that's delightful.

A very interesting beer. Somewhat off putting cloudy brownish yellow appearance...however knowing it's a coffee IPA this was to be expected. Aroma is very nice fresh coffee with a noticeable hop prescence. Taste follows the nose with a remarkable fresh coffee flavor and a fruity hop taste on the back end. I really liked this beer and was pleased with the great fresh coffee taste without overshadowing the hops.

on draft at the brewery. This really shouldn't work. Coffee and hops are not known to be good bedfellows, but this starts as grassy, floral Flower Power and ends with smooth, subdued coffee notes. Glad to have tried it.

Poured from a 24 oz. can. Has a cloudy orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of coffee, light citrus hops. Taste is dominated by coffee, mild hops, very little bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer. However, rating to style, this beer has little of the characteristics I expect from this style.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a dark yellow-ish orange, with a quarter inch head, and a bit of lacing, not all that much.

This one smells like earthy coffee, a bit of grassiness, and some citrus.

This one isn't quite better than regular Flower Power, but it's definitely an interesting twist. The earthy coffee is a nice addition to the floral and citrus character for sure.

This is medium bodied, with a crisp and juicy mouthfeel, and a higher level of carbonation.

I'm glad I finally got to try this one.
