Hop farming once thrived in New York State. In the early 1900s, 95% of all hops used in the US were grown here in New York. However, soon the combination of crop disease & prohibition put an end to local hop growing. Today, there's a new movement afoot to bring commercial hops back to NY. The Ithaca Beer has teamed up with Pederson Farms (Seneca Castle, NY) to create a Double IPA brewed with 100% NY hops.

12oz bottle poured into a Pint Glass
A Poured a very nice bright and hazy cloudy amber with a good two finger high head of white frothy and foamy lace on the top. Nice slow retention left behind copious amounts of side glass lace and a few bubbles of carbonation streaming up to replenish it as they went. Good looking solid IPA.
S The aroma was to be honest a tad light and this started to get me a bit nervous as I had high hopes for this one. What I was able to pick up was a very sweet, deep floral citrus hops. A touch of grain floating around in the back, but again the smell was deceptively light.
T The flavor on the other hand completely redeemed this one from the first sip. Very big bright and fresh citric hop taste. A lot of really fresh flavors were dominating here and really pushing the envelope as far as how bitter it would get. Enough of a bite to the finish that it kept you looking for just a little bit more in the finish. This was really a great flavor and it had a bit of uniqueness to the hop profile I honestly had not tasted before. It was like an underlying sweetness that was very good and really pushed through quite nicely. Very light and well balanced it did not linger too long, but that first sip was a doozy.
M The feel was nice light and full of carbonation, again deceptively light as this was certainly a big one. A really great overall feel and a nice crisp clean finish capped it off well.
D Now this one could definitely get me in a bit of trouble. There was really no hint at the ABV inside what so ever and the crisp clean smooth profile made this one go down a little bit quicker then it probably should have. Really could have used a second one when all was said and done.
Overall this was a really great east coast IPA. I really loved that all the hops were NY grown, that may have been the cause of that nice little extra bit of something that I detected. A great full profile that really shined this was definitely a quality brew that I would love to try again. A very nice example of the style and something I would definitely have to recommend.

Old school DIPA now from a tall boy 16 oz can. Not so fresh 10-15-18.
Amber with quickly fading off-white head with decent lacing.
Very rosy aroma, high floral notes with some grapefruit and pine/resin. Light-medium caramel maltiness, also old school.
Flavor heavy caramel too with honeysuckle/rose and herbal flavors strongest and backed with grapefruit, pine, and resin. At least medium bitterness. Old school like from 2008.
Medium body with tacky feel and low carbonation but reasonably dry finish.
Transports you back to the old days and shows how far Beer has come in the last 20 years.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a nonic pint glass. Appears a clear golden amber color with about two fingers of creamy bone white foam. The head leaves a thin sticky lace in it's wake. Smells and tastes of citrus fruits such as tangerines and grapefruits, tropical pineapple notes, caramelized malt, pine, and some alcohol. Medium to full bodied with ample carbonation.

Ithaca Double IPA is a very clear and sparkling amber ale with a dense, light khaki head that fades to a thin film that leaves pretty nice lacing. The aroma is bright, sweet, floral and piny. There is some light cereal in the nose. It's a well balanced aroma. There is a fruity, perhaps peachy, quality to it. Juicy. The medium bodied beer is soft and sticky, but the finish comes suddenly: crisp, dry and a little sharp. It has a nice full flavor that shows a nice balance. It is very bitter and destroys the tongue. There are flavors of tropical fruit and bubblegum. The malt is very smooth and mellow. It's a touch sweet and boozy. The aftertaste is a long green bitterness bomb. It may be the slightest bit woody, but it's only twigs. It fades in and out in a non-shocking manner. This beer is very straightforward. The malt simply does the needful and nonchalantly as possible, while the hops rob your tongue's house before it gets back to the store! Seriously? This is Ithaca? It pretty much whumps this style in a simple, but unique way. I can only imagine that this was dry hopped with at least a couple different things. It's the fresh fruity thing that sets this one apart. It's a little more brazen than Cascazilla. Rock on, Face in the Lake!

A: Poured a beautiful dark amber with a thick foamy white head.
S: Very sweet hop aroma with fresh grapefruit, rich caramel sweetness, pine and dried oranges. The nose was soft and well refined and smooth.
T: The palate was very rich and sweet with a huge caramel presence to start things out. A load of fresh citrus and grapefruit soon hits you with a background fruitiness (caramel apples). The flavor fades with nice lingering hints of citrus and sweetness.
M: full bodied, malty and sweet with a nice pine hoppiness.
D: You will not believe this is a 10abv beer and is nicely covered up the malt sweetness. Very good and enjoyable 2x over.

Bottle from Premier Gourmet. 100% NY State hops. Cool. Clear, bright orange beer with an aroma of bubblegum and spicy hops. Very unique smelling beer. I get the floral hops as well that I get in most of the hoppy Ithaca beers, especially Flower Power. Very nice.
