Notes / Commercial Description:
Hop farming once thrived in New York State. In the early 1900s, 95% of all hops used in the US were grown here in New York. However, soon the combination of crop disease & prohibition put an end to local hop growing. Today, there's a new movement afoot to bring commercial hops back to NY. The Ithaca Beer has teamed up with Pederson Farms (Seneca Castle, NY) to create a Double IPA brewed with 100% NY hops.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a nonic pint glass. Appears a clear golden amber color with about two fingers of creamy bone white foam. The head leaves a thin sticky lace in it's wake. Smells and tastes of citrus fruits such as tangerines and grapefruits, tropical pineapple notes, caramelized malt, pine, and some alcohol. Medium to full bodied with ample carbonation.

Ithaca Double IPA is a very clear and sparkling amber ale with a dense, light khaki head that fades to a thin film that leaves pretty nice lacing. The aroma is bright, sweet, floral and piny. There is some light cereal in the nose. It's a well balanced aroma. There is a fruity, perhaps peachy, quality to it. Juicy. The medium bodied beer is soft and sticky, but the finish comes suddenly: crisp, dry and a little sharp. It has a nice full flavor that shows a nice balance. It is very bitter and destroys the tongue. There are flavors of tropical fruit and bubblegum. The malt is very smooth and mellow. It's a touch sweet and boozy. The aftertaste is a long green bitterness bomb. It may be the slightest bit woody, but it's only twigs. It fades in and out in a non-shocking manner. This beer is very straightforward. The malt simply does the needful and nonchalantly as possible, while the hops rob your tongue's house before it gets back to the store! Seriously? This is Ithaca? It pretty much whumps this style in a simple, but unique way. I can only imagine that this was dry hopped with at least a couple different things. It's the fresh fruity thing that sets this one apart. It's a little more brazen than Cascazilla. Rock on, Face in the Lake!

A: Poured a beautiful dark amber with a thick foamy white head.

S: Very sweet hop aroma with fresh grapefruit, rich caramel sweetness, pine and dried oranges. The nose was soft and well refined and smooth.

T: The palate was very rich and sweet with a huge caramel presence to start things out. A load of fresh citrus and grapefruit soon hits you with a background fruitiness (caramel apples). The flavor fades with nice lingering hints of citrus and sweetness.

M: full bodied, malty and sweet with a nice pine hoppiness.

D: You will not believe this is a 10abv beer and is nicely covered up the malt sweetness. Very good and enjoyable 2x over.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving no lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit nose. Flavor is hoppy grapefruit with hints of sweetness. Some lingering bitterness. $2.29 for a 12oz bottle from Yankee Spirits South Attleboro, Ma.

Bottle from Premier Gourmet. 100% NY State hops. Cool. Clear, bright orange beer with an aroma of bubblegum and spicy hops. Very unique smelling beer. I get the floral hops as well that I get in most of the hoppy Ithaca beers, especially Flower Power. Very nice.

Bottle courtesy of mymrnngjckt poured into a snifter.

Pours a bright, hazy golden orange with a dense one-finger head that dissipates fairly quickly to a ring leaving sporadic lacing. The smell is surprising sweet with peaches and apricots on top of the big citrus hop base. There is also some caramel malts in the nose as well. The taste doesn't quite deliver on the unique smell and is a mix of citrus and pine and some bready malts. It has an abrasive bitterness through the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very sticky with strong carbonation. This is an interesting DIPA though I wish the flavor measured up to the unique aroma. Still worth trying.

Pours a rich orange amber, great clarity and about two fingers of light khaki head. Head is dense and creamy, keeps pretty well and leaves a little bit of stick.

Smell is quite fruity, with sticky sweet citrus along with maybe some apricots and peaches. Also some earthy aromas and plenty of caramel malt, a bit of a bready grain aroma and some alcohol.

Taste also has ample caramel malt sweetness and some lightly toasted grain flavor. But most of the flavor is hops, although the bitterness overshadows flavor to some extent. There is some bitter citrus, pine, earthy flavors, and lots of resiny hop bitterness. Bit of an alcohol burn as this one goes down, as well. Mouthfeel is full bodied, oily and creamy but the alcohol burn takes away from the smoothness.

Not bad, but pretty average as far as DIPAs go. Still, I love that they use only NYS hops. Cheers to that.

330 ml. found at Premiere Gourmet.A hoppy beer, was not sure what hops used, but leafy taste. Even a tad of wintermint. Not a bad double IPA, short of being a hop bomb and well malted. Just very hoppy.Carbonation was a bit high, this would be interesting on cask.

Pours a cloudy orange into the glass with ample head that lasts forever.
Smells like a freaking barleywine. Really. Like a really hoppy barleywine. So much honey and alcohol in the nose, it's surprising.
Tastes much like the aroma. No other impy IPA tastes like this whatsoever. Like a honeycomb with some dry alcohol and tons of hop flavor and bitterness in the finish.
The mouthfeel is creamy-smooth with a lot of warming, almost fusel alcohol in the finish, that's accented more by the bitterness from the hops which lends a slight astringency.
It's quite drinkable and certainly enjoyable. Deserves a try by any beer lover... it's a one-of-a-kind beer, to say the least.

5.4.08 - Had this bottle set for a review after 1 yr and somehow had the presence of mind to follow that. Obviously the sweetness jumps at you as the hops fade. The surprise is the change on the tongue. This one is still very nice - keeping a twinge of citrus and not diving too deep into the malt arena. I have to bump the taste for this.

4.13.07: This one pours a dusty dirty apricot with a nice haze into my impy pint glass. Head rises a scant half inch and settles right down. Aromas are more on the sweeter/malty side but some citrus and light hop aroma makes its way out. A bit of alcohol on teh nose here and there.

Hits your mouth with a light carbonation and rolls a sweet hoppy wave over the tongue. Hints of tangerine roll in with second waves of sweet maltyness and a slightly citric dryness rounds it out.

This is a decent brew and I love the fact they used 100% NY hops. Will pick these up once in a while but there are few a prefer more; pretty solid across the board.

Thanks to Wasatch for including this in a trade.

Pours hazed orange amber with a thin, foamy, off-white head that stays around, leaving some lacing.

The smell is of grapefruit and resin with a caramel backing.

The taste is resiny with a spicy hop bite. Caramel sweetness and biscuity notes balance it out. Alcohol comes through in the finish, though not sharp, and well-covered for 10%.

The feel is fullish and rather chewy.

A solid DIPA. The caramel comes through just a tad too much as it progresses for my personal preference, but overall a solid, enjoyable sipper of a DIPA.

Bright orange and clear with little foam.

Floral hops with some orange creme in the nose.

Taste: A fairly mellow DIPA, but still good. Light caramel flavor leads, sweet throughout, joined by a flowery and smooth orange flavor. Not the hoppiest example of the style, but what is here is sufficient and leaves a mild pucker well into the aftertaste.

Alcohol level is well hidden -- drinks like a mild-mannered single IPA. Overall a nice beer, and I'm glad to see there was an attempt to showcase NY-grown hops before the shortage. Hopefully future beers will be able to make the same claim.

I got this bottle in a trade with nutbrown. Thanks Alan!It pours from 12oz bottle a clear bronze with a 2 finger head of foam.

The smell is big on the grapefruit with a secondary nose of caramel malt that does its best to take over the more I sniff. Nice.

The taste has it all going on here. Lots of hops with grapefruit and pine but the malt is right there, on pace with the hops and actually becomes the most dominant flavour after a few more sips. There's a slight taste of alcohol here and it gives *some* warming after the swallow but I don't think it detracts much, if at all, from my session. Slow sipper? You betchya but that's more wanting to stretch out the session than having the alcohol get to me.

The mouthfeel is pretty full and creamy and it finishes on a slightly malty sweetness note. Darn good stuff!
Btw, the foam holds its own and there's about a 1" solid layer with plenty of lacing as I'm close to finishes the bottle.

Another fine DIPA to be had here and I'm so glad I got the chance to try this offering from Ithaca.

Pours a deep copperish color with a 1 finger head with ample lacing but not too frothy. Smell is definately more earthy and spicy (almost peppery) than most DIPA's. Taste is pine with a little citrus but just a hint, and a malty smoothness to finish. Lack of crispness is a slight drawback. Mouthfeel is malty and smooth. Drinkability is good with a nice cover of the 10 abv. Overall a decent DIPA, but not one I would go the extra mile for.

A- Pours a burnt orange. Crystal clear which displays the light bubbles coming off the bottom of my wine glass. Just half a finger of light egg white foam top the beer and leave sheets of lacing.

S- Lots of candy- in particular I smell Twizzlers...some sharp whiskey smell. It's all close to caramel, but not reaching it, which I appreciate for difference's sake.

T- For a DIPA the hops on this beer are not that strong. In fact I would describe it as more of a barleywine. Again there is quite a strong candy taste, bringing a syrupy sweetness. There is some bitterness that falls on the back and sides of my mouth bringing the alcohol with it.

M- Syrupy, alcoholic, and all around powerful in the mouthfeel.

D- I think this one could use some more hops, and with it a little more balance to the candy sweetness. But overall a powerful beer.

A beer brewed with 100% New York hops? Cool.

It pours a bright clear bronze color. The thin head has poor retention but leaves a decent webwork of lace behind. Piney, orangey hops and biscuity malt show in the nose, as does a creeping alcohol spice. The taste is hoppy with pine sap, orange drops and aspirin noticeable. booze is very noticeable and mildly destracting, which is understandable for a 10% brew. The mouthfeel is light for a DIPA with soft carbonation. The finish is bitter and oddly fruity (white grapes?).

A decent DIPA, though the alcohol could be better hidden and the body could be fuller.

12oz bottle served at cellar temp (50 degrees) into my Cooper's Cave pint glass. All NY for this one.

A: Deep amber color with slightly less than one finger of head. Some lacing but not that much.

S: This is where you can begin to tell this IPA is different. Not nearly as citric as the west coast hops. Much more subdued with a slightly musty scent on them. Some malt is able to shine through all the hops as well.

T: Citrus is first. Notes of grapefruits. Slightly piny taste. The malt is noticeable on the front of the tongue. Very sweet which balances out the hops. The alcohol is present in this one more than most DIPAs I have had. It does clock in at 10% so that is not much of a surprise.

M: Med body that coats everything on the way down. Bitterness lingers in the aftertaste but it feels physical.

D: I am admittedly not a hop head but I liked this beer. The 100% NY hops thing did get to me and was the reason for picking it up. I have sent this beer out on a few trades and people always seem to be into it. The bad news is that soon there will not be 100% NY hops and I think it will loose something as a result. Drink up while you can.

Had a 2 oz. sample poured from the tap at the brewery into a glass tasting glass (much better than the plastic cups that some breweries use). Pours a deep amber with an off-white foamy head. Decent retention and a good amount of lacing. Intense hop aroma - spicy, floral and citrusy all at once. Good amount of malt sweetness helps balance the hop bitterness for a clean dry finish. Medium-bodied mouthfeel makes this a very drinkable beer given the strength. With their NYS hop producer struggling to maintain sufficient crop production, this incarnation of their DIPA may soon be gone for good. Fear not though, the staff did assure that if it did come to it, they would use hops outside of NYS to supplement and keep this tasty beer alive.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy copper with a finger width of white foam. Great head retention and lacing, which seems to be a trend among these hoppy Ithaca beers. Aroma is a little subdued but consists mostly of floral citrus notes, some breadiness, and a waft of alcohol.

Taste is a blend of tangy grapefruit notes, mellow sweetness and alcohol. The hops are very light and subtle, really only making themselves known in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium and smooth but takes on more of a syrupy feel as it warms. Heat is definitely present but not overpowering. When at room temp, the alcohol mixes with the sweetness and viscous body to give off almost a medicinal taste.

Hmmm, quite the interesting Double IPA here. I think maybe increasing the hops and toning down the heat would have gone a long way in improving my impression of it. It wasn't by any means an offensive experience or anything but I don't see myself revisiting this effort from Ithaca anytime soon.
