Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The name CascaZilla (Cas-kuh-zil-uh) is a play on both the name of a gorge in Ithaca called Cascadilla and the monster amounts of Cascade Hops we use to make the beer. The predominant flavor and aroma of this beer comes from fresh American hops. CascaZilla gets its distinctive red color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends to the beer, a hearty body and sweetness. It is a hoppy red ale!

Poured from a bottle into pint glass in July 2016. Nice that the bottle is dated. Drank about 3 months after "Packaged" date.

Appearance: Deep amber with tan head. Beer is clear and not cloudy. Head is thick, and leaves a nice film on the glass.

Smell: Aroma filled with a strong hops aroma, and includes citrus, pepper, and pine smells.

Taste: There is a noticeable hops flavor, as expected. There is good bite from the hops along with other flavors like citrus. There is some sweetness from the malts. The aftertaste provides a variety of flavors over time.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Medium alcohol, which matches the 7% posted.

This is a smooth medium-bodied beer, and that is easy to drink. It is less bitter than their Creeker IPA, but more hopped than typical red ales. It is a good Red Ale, and I would drink this again.

L - murky muddy brown.

S - sweet caramel malts, dark fruits, but not too overpowering.

T - subdued flavor. Caramel sweetness with a lingering hop bitterness. Chocolate orange. Some pine, candied fruits.

F - medium mouthfeel with an underlying silkiness.

O - deep rich flavorful amber. Packs a little more punch than the usual stuff but still nothing to write home about.

Looks like it was bottled 8/10/2015. Pours a clear, dark orange/amber color with an average sized off white head. I left a good deal of sediment with the remaining 1/3 of the bottle. The aroma is of toasted caramel, candied orange, spicy pine and earthy hops, bread dough, cedar. Medium bodied mouth feel, nice balance, much more enjoyable than I expected at nearly 3 months out. Good sweet toasty caramel backbone, with citrus zest, grapefruit bitterness, pine resin, and dried apricots on the flavor.
