Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The name CascaZilla (Cas-kuh-zil-uh) is a play on both the name of a gorge in Ithaca called Cascadilla and the monster amounts of Cascade Hops we use to make the beer. The predominant flavor and aroma of this beer comes from fresh American hops. CascaZilla gets its distinctive red color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends to the beer, a hearty body and sweetness. It is a hoppy red ale!

L - murky muddy brown.

S - sweet caramel malts, dark fruits, but not too overpowering.

T - subdued flavor. Caramel sweetness with a lingering hop bitterness. Chocolate orange. Some pine, candied fruits.

F - medium mouthfeel with an underlying silkiness.

O - deep rich flavorful amber. Packs a little more punch than the usual stuff but still nothing to write home about.

Looks like it was bottled 8/10/2015. Pours a clear, dark orange/amber color with an average sized off white head. I left a good deal of sediment with the remaining 1/3 of the bottle. The aroma is of toasted caramel, candied orange, spicy pine and earthy hops, bread dough, cedar. Medium bodied mouth feel, nice balance, much more enjoyable than I expected at nearly 3 months out. Good sweet toasty caramel backbone, with citrus zest, grapefruit bitterness, pine resin, and dried apricots on the flavor.

9/4....pours deep crimson brown with white foam, some stickiness. Toffee nose, faint. Roasty toasted caramel toffee bready amber ale taste with a subtle bitter that balances out the sweet. Quite good.

75 day old bottle at Lower Depths. Would really like to try this fresher as it had a very mute nose. Still really good flavor and mouthfeel.

Had on tap at Ithaca Beer Company. This was definitely my favorite of the beers I tried- the rest were enjoyable but nothing special.

This beer pours a nice deep red. Nothing overwhelming on the nose- just some caramel malts and of course the hops. I've never been a huge fan of red ales, but this was one of the better ones I've had. The hops were balanced perfectly by the malts. Very smooth and easy finish. The flavor profile was a bit one note I suppose, but I really enjoyed it regardless. I would definitely drink this one again.
