Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The name CascaZilla (Cas-kuh-zil-uh) is a play on both the name of a gorge in Ithaca called Cascadilla and the monster amounts of Cascade Hops we use to make the beer. The predominant flavor and aroma of this beer comes from fresh American hops. CascaZilla gets its distinctive red color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends to the beer, a hearty body and sweetness. It is a hoppy red ale!

No freshness date, but a Total Wine (receipted?) sticker that reads 03/9/15

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and copper red in color with a khaki, finger width head. Sub-par retention, resulting in a broken layer of surface suds with a razor thin ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell - Caramel with a thick wooden tone. Light floral notes. A hint of toasted malt.

Taste - Follows the nose. Heavy caramel and woody notes. A bit of floral character peaks through mid-taste along with some metallic twang. Fair roasted malt notes hit near the finish and bleed through with faint chocolate and coffee character, and a trace of citrus and spice hop character in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - On the fuller side of medium with moderate carbonation. Smooth texture, then a crisp, mostly dry finish.

Overall - Decent flavor profile, but lacks a nice citrus bite that would really make it pop. Maybe add some citra or mosaic? Otherwise pretty good.

A: crystal clear; deep reddish amber; 1 finger ivory head that receded to a thick collar; OK lacing;

S: earthy;

T: cascade hops for a moment, then caramel takes over; mild bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation;

O: I expected more - pretty much one note; not enough hop character for a beer with "monster" hops;

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a pretty dark amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, citrus. Taste is well balanced hops and malts, smooth and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.
