Reviewed on 09/04/09. Bottle. Pours a light mahogany brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of molasses, caramel malt, roasted malt, sweet dark fruits (raisin, plum), and toffee. Flavor is a little sweeter than I would like (actually it also has some acidic/sour notes too) with a background of roasted and sweet malt. Ugh, not tasty at all. But I don't get any nut or oak.

Poured a thick pale head that stuck around for the entire beer into a pint glass. Purchased as part of a variety 12 pack.

Clear brown ale, with an oaky flavor to it. Seems to have a slight bitter taste possibly from the oak it was aged with. Nut flavor is definitely present and as it is in CAPITALs on the bottle, I guess it does the labeling justice. Pretty good brew, could drink a few of them. Possibly past its prime - Best if Drank before Feb 09.

No description other than the name of the beer on the bottle. The name of the beer does it justice, but it wouldnt hurt...

Thanks to Israel for sending this along for Easter.
The bottle poured into my Sam Adams glass produced two fingers worth of tan head that settled to a wisp of lace at the top of the glass. The body of the brew was mahogany brown in color and wonderfully clear

Aromas of caramel and nuts filled my head with a light woodiness coming thru as well. The flavors are great sweet malts and nuttiness. The oak gives the nuttiness an added depth. It feels good in the mouth with enough carbonation to keep it interesting for my tongue

This is a great brown ale, very drinkable, easily sessionable as well. If I was in the mood for brown I grab this again in a heartbeat

12oz bottle at 55 degrees.

Pours dark brown with an amber hue. Good clarity with a bit of sediment that dropped into the glass. A thin tan head dissapated quickly and lead to a placid surface with zero lacework.

Aromatics lead off with caramel, hazelnuts, vanilla, and nougat. Hints of cocoa, toffee, and a suggestion of sweet bourbon follow through.

Medium bodied at best with a thinnish mouthfeel and a slick, quick finish.

Dry malt, drizzeled caramel, cocoa-dusted biscuits, and chipped toffee start the palate.
Hints of an oaky dryness and nut skins follow through. Hops are here only to offset the sweet malt.

Finishes with cocoa overtones, fading vanilla and oak, and a hint of bourbon.

This one is great in the nose, but falls kind of flat on the palate. Carbonation is on the low side also.
I could really see diggin' this one on cask though.

A - Poured a brown color with an off white head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is of roasted nutty malt and oak

T - Follows the nose with an oaky nutty malt flavor

M - This beer has a thin body with medium carbonation to it

D - I really enjoyed this beer unfortunately it was pretty thin and watery if they thicken up the body slightly this would be a good sessionable beer worth trying sometime

Pours a dark brown and slightly hazy color. The color turns more of a moron in the corners when held to the light. There is very little carbonation and almost no head at all.
Smell is almost non-existant. There is a slight bit of toffee malt in the nose, and a bit of smokey oak.
Taste is almost exactly what a text book brown ale should taste like. There are good malt tastes and a slight bit of hops.
Mouthfeel is average as well. A bit chewy, which is normal for the style, but a little too thin.
Drinkability is good because of the lack of strong taste makes it easy to keep drinking. A little too boring to want to drink a lot of it though. I wouldn't go out of my way to get this beer, but I also wouldn't turn it down if it was opened and handed to me.

12 oz. bottle poured into a standar pint glass.

With an aggressive pour, this baby yields a two finger light tan pillowy head that falls to a thin layer of foam atop a mahogany brew. Some thin webbing holds on to the sides of the glass. Smell has some wood, caramel malt, and toasted nuts. A metallic aroma finds its way in the nose as well, not liking that too much. Taste starts off with sweet nuts and fig. Midway some toasted grains and earthy hops emerge. Aftertaste is pretty moist with sweet caramel and a touch of chocolate. A bit more flavor than the original Nut Brown. A creamy medium body with a smooth feel and a light carbonation. A nice brown ale, nothing to go crazy over, but I certainly wouldn't turn it down.

The beer poured a dark brown with a single-finger tan head and some visible carbonation. The smell is mostly toasted malt with a bit of nuttiness and smoke. The taste starts off with some sweet toasted malt that gives way to a bit of bread and nut flavors with just a hint of hops and oakiness in the end. The mouthfeel is slightly thick with low carbonation. This is The beer doesn't really taste remarkably different from Ithaca's Nut Brown Ale, but I think I like the oaked version a little bit better.

Dark brown with a tan head that instantly fades. Not so much as even a bubble on the side of the glass. Looks like flat diet root beer.

Smells like smokey oak and brown, nutty malt. Very appealing.

Brown ale nuttyness comes through as a soapy, sour swallow. Oak comes through as watered down coffee. Very watery. I know that English browns are supposed to be mild and subtle but c'mon, more flavor! Smooth mouthfeel.

Pours dark brown with a small tan head, leaves plenty of lacing around my glass. Smells of Maple, Caramel, with some Faint Woody notes. It starts off with a bunch of Chocolate and some Coffee up front, followed by some Nuttiness, and ends with a nice dry Oak finish. Medium body and light carbonation.

A- Pours amber brown color. tiny head fades rather quickly. almost can't see through it.

S- Smells like a wet oak barrel. slightly sour. no hop aroma.

T- Some roasted malt, no noticeable hops. Sour, yeasty flavors. it got better as it warmed up a bit. Nutty finish. has a refreshing sour taste.

M- Medium to heavy carbonation. thin mouthfeel.

D- Not bad, but a bit too sour. it just tastes too much like a new barrel to me. now if it had been put in some sort of used whiskey barrel, that could be interesting...

A: This one poured a hazy chestnut brown color with a small tan head that quickly fizzled down to just bubbles.
S: First hit to the nose is a musty roasted and burnt malt aroma and then some roasted nuttiness. Looking for a little more malt in there. No hop presence in the aroma. Faint burnt caramel in there too.
T: Pleasant roasted malt flavor has a hint of oak to make it unique and standing out. Some bitter hazelnut like flavor sticks a bit in the finish. Nothing for hops coming out only to balance a bit.
M: Medium body and moderate carbonation. A bit slick on the tongue.
D: This beer lacks in some areas but the taste is probably it's high point. It makes it drinkable and possible to have a few. Not my favorite from the mixed case I bought.

Pours brown-amber with a head that dissipates to a lacing. The aroma is caramel, oak, bittersweet chocolate and slight alcohol. Flavor is tobacco, slight sweet caramel, smoke, slight oak and a little watery. Starts off thick on the palate then diminished to a watery taste and feel in the finish. I want more than a watery finish. It falls a little flat not as malty as I would like and not as oaked as I would want.

A: Poured a dark opaque color with a deep tan head that was pretty persistent leaving a good sticky lacing.

S: a sweet dark roasted malt, and a rich nuttiness.

T: For flavor there was dark roasted grains, dark chocolate that is followed by coffee. There was a slight breadiness to the palate, with a great dry roasted nuttiness to finish things. There was a noticeable hop spiciness from the hops.

M: lighter then expected with a sweet nuttiness, some brown sugar, and very lightly carbonated on the tongue.

D: A nice flavor and easy drinking solid example making for a good session.

The appearance is hazy and cloudy mahogany brown. Thin creamy head. Nice to look at; nice and thick-looking.

A woody, oaky top aroma, backed by a nutty malt. Hints of brown sugar. The malt is more roasted than sweet in this beer.

The taste is a very nutty bitter brown, with a slight sweetness at the end. The brown sugar takes a backseat to the nutty/bitter side. The oaky wood flavor is merely an accent, and the beer doesn't make a fetish out of it.

In the mouth, it's dry and ashy. Creamy on the front of the tongue, dry at the swallow. It's a nutty, roasted, bitter brown ale. The oak is only slight. Pretty good.

Pours a pleasant deep brown with a quickly dissipating head and shallow head. The beer smells wonderful, vanilla, nuts, and a little bit of cherry. Has a nice toasty malt flavor to it with just a touch of vanilla and a subtle hop profile. A soft sweetness that stays on your palate after swallowing. The mouthfeel is largely unremarkable, but the light carbonation fits well with this beer. In terms of drinkability, I could tackle another two or three before I've reached my limit.
