Appearance: Pours with about a finger of tan head. Very light active carbonation in glass while drinking. Dark brown on the edges where some light shines through.

Smell: Smooth aromas of milk chocolate, oats, and caramel greet the drinker first. Some mild roasted malt warms up on the body. Aromas of cacao nibs continue to ride throughout. More sweetness overall then any heavier malt tones.

Taste: Roasted malt and medium to heavy coffee tones hit the palate first. Creamier flavors of vanilla, milk chocolate, and caramel balance out the beginning of the beer. The roasted malt pops up again on the back end. The finish has some dryness with a pleasant amount of sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Nice transitions of dry to sweet. Pretty heavy on the palate. Carbonation is low which makes this one go down easy.

Overall: Good amount of complexity with plenty of traditional porter malt tones. I would not put it with the Edmund Fitzgerald's or Founder's Porter but is definitely a good one.

A - Clarity shines through this dark brown beer but once it's resting in the glass beneath it's plump tan head, it's almost black looking. The nicely retained head drapes layers of light lacing on the glass for added appearance points!

S - Dark roasted malts offer little burnt astringency but focus on smooth milk chocolate and with a touch of chocolate-covered coffee bean and raisin in the background. Mudpuppy smells straightforward and delicious!

T - Milk chocolate and mocha transition from aroma to flavor but unlike the aroma suggests, the beer has a some bitter roasted malt astringency that evens it's perception nicely as this porter trails off with just a slight hint of earthy hoppiness.

M - Mudpuppy is a medium bodied porter that drinks nicely due to it's balance of malt sweetness and roasted bitterness that leaves the tongue dry and ready for another gulp.

O - I think it's a safe assumption that Central Waters is most widely known for their barrel program which, for the most part features stouts. It should come as no surprise then that their Mudpuppy Porter, a stout's younger brother, should be just as crafted in regards to dark malts and, sure enough, it is! Mudpuppy Porter is a full-flavored beer that keeps it sessionable; low ABV, and a smooth, easy drinking body. A win-win all around!
