It had been a while - at least 3 years - since I had this so I ran out and picked up a bottle of this year's release. I remember it being excellent. Is it as good as I recall? Not quite.

Not sure of the bottling date but pretty fresh. Just came to MN this week.

Appears a bit thin. Not much lacing. But it does pour with couple fingers of creamy head.

Coffee on the nose of course. Not a whole lot else on the nose.

Tastes of coffee and big malt sweetness. Feel like it could use more roast/ chocolate malts. Not extremely complex but I do love my coffee.

It is a bit thin for the style.

I have both the 22oz and the 12oz. This review is based on the 12oz.

Pours a deep, cola-like brown with a thin, off-white head.

Smells like milk chocolate with a shot of espresso. Plenty of roasty malts sets this up to be one of the best coffee stouts so far! I'm not familiar with Emy J's coffee, but methinks I should check it out after I'm done with the beer.

This tastes on point! Roasted coffee grounds and sweet chocolate. Perfectly carbonated and I can only imagine how amazing it would be to wake up this every morning.

In the end, it's a coffee stout, so there's not much in the way of uniqueness. It's all so wonderfully executed and delivers on what it says it is. Central Waters stouts are all worthy of your attention.

Kevinpiits to the rescue again. Poured out of a bottle into my tulip.
A – Brown/black on the pour. Bit of a creamy tan head that settles and left spot lacing.
S – Heavy roasted malt, coffee, chocolate
T – Bitter bite of coffee flavors up front. Heavy roasted malts. Chocolate and vanilla sweetness. Just a touch of smokiness.
M – Medium bodied. Smooth on the palate. Medium carbonation.
O – Very nice stout here. Has a great mix of coffee bite and sweetness. Easy drinker.

Are you looking for a beer with a strong coffee flavor? If so, then this is probably your beer.

These days, I'm not a huge drinker of porters and stouts. However, some of the stronger Impy Stouts like Abyss, Expedition, or GL's Blackout Stout have been quite good. On the contrary, I didn't enjoy Dark Force, Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, or Black Hole. Still, if I'm gonna drink a stout/porter these days, I personally prefer a coffee-flavored stout/porter more than anything else. With that being said, this Central Waters brew is one of the best coffee flavored brews I've ever tried. Other memorable coffee beers I've tried and liked in the recent past include Bell's Java Stout, Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Stout, Five Seasons ICO (Imperial Coffee Oatmeal Stout), the original version of Great Divide Yeti with Espresso on tap, or Péché Mortel among others.

I poured this CW brew (which I just picked up in Madison, WI last week) at arms length, but could still immediately smell the overwhelming coffee aroma...wow! Upon tasting, the strong coffee character becomes even more omnipresent, yet it still balances well with the dark, roasted, stout flavors. Check this one out if you're a lover of potent coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavors. This is the first coffee brew I've had which might actually be more coffee than beer...but that's not a bad thing at all considering how good this one tastes! Yum...give me some more!

A: pours a nice dark rich brown, practically brown. lightly creamed coffee colored head with a low retention rate and nice light lacing.

S: wonderful roasted malt aroma, dark chocolate, huge roasted coffee notes. light sweetness of cherries.

T: outstanding flavor. big roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, like a mocha coffee drink with some espresso. wonderful balance with the hops. great coffee notes here with the fair trade coffee. aftertaste is pure coffee and chocolate.

M: full bodied, but not too thick. mild carbonation level. amazing palate. extremely smooth.

D: outstanding brew. great flavored stout. this shouldn't be a want once, this is an amazing beer that should be in my house permanently. If only they would come to Florida, life would be better.

Poured into a snifter from a 12 ounce bottle.

A: This beer pours black with little light shining through. Lacing is sticky and coats the glass, but the light tan head settles quickly.

S: Mostly coffee with dark roasted malt character. Some chocolate and dark fruit is present, with a slightly grassy hop note.

T: Talk about coffee! This espresso-laden brew is full of it! Malt gives some chocolate and toast character, along with some dried dark fruit and spice. Hops lend a nice dry finish with some floral notes.

Notes: This brew is full-bodied and robust. Flavor is intense. Not a session brew by any means, but extremely drinkable. This might be one of the best brews I have tasted from Central Waters. If I cam get more, I will certainly jump on the opportunity.

Thanks again to Eric for this treat.

A: Pours brown with a slight head.

S: Chocolate and some good coffee, not the gas station type. A little roasted malt.

T: Bitter coffee flavor with hint of bitter chocolate. The coffee taste does'nt come through as the smell suggests. Slight alcohol finish.

M: Medium thick feel with adequate carbonation.

D: Could drink just 1 more

a: black as night. thick, frothy 2 1/2 finger mocha colored head. lacing subsides quickly

s: big, heavy coffee aroma (slightly charred/burnt). dark bitter chocolate. hint of vanilla

t: following on from the aroma, big, heavy coffee flavor (slightly charred/burnt). some bitter dark chocolate.

m: medium carbonation. Body is slightly thin. creamy & smooth. finishes a touch dry.

o: Solid coffee stout. Coffee aroma/flavor comes big & bold. This is not a coffee stout in name only where the coffee is heavily muted in all aspects. Is it one dimensional? Perhaps but being a coffee stout it has the coffee aspects down in spades. Only complaint is I wish the body was a touch thicker. Would love to have tried fresh FBS next to this as I think the CW could win the battle. A must try for coffee lovers. And a reasonably priced bomber to boot!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Hazy, dark reddish-brown color with a peripheral ring of golden brown bubbles. Light lacing remains on the glass and fine sediment is plentiful.

S: Medium-dark roast and unctuous dairy notes outpace actual coffee which only makes a minor contribution. Other minor characteristics include fennel seed and green herbaceousness. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins dry, with fairly husky roasted malt and earthy hop aromatics. Acidity is mild, keeping within appropriate boundaries. Flavors are dark and unctuous in the middle, slightly touched by carbonic acid but absent of any fruity qualities. The finish is kicked off with a mild briny thread that gives way to dry coffee-affected bitterness. No alcohol is detected.

M: Medium to thick viscosity, slightly syrupy and acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: Although this stout boasts of coffee presence on the label, it takes a metered and restrained approach to its execution. As a result this appears to be a respectable beer in which coffee is just one well-integrated component. The most troubling feature proves to be the pallid appearance, which is occasionally encountered in the field of strong stouts.

Bomber received from the vicious nflmvp who mercilessly slayed my wants in a recent trade. Shit didn't hit the fan until I cracked the beers he sent, 'cos he darned near killed my liver too...

A: About as dark brown as you can get without being pitch black, there's barely any light coming through. With reddish highlights, there's a dark brown head that caps this beer that slowly recedes to a disk as about as thick as an iPhone (about time someone referred to one in a review, eh?) with a good bit of carbonation creeping up the side of the glass.

S: Smells like, eh, coffee. And the good kind too. Wonderfully roasty with just the hint of creaminess and bitterness. There's a pleasing coffee grounds-like aroma as well. Simply put, this is a tour de force with a lot of coffee up front balanced with a little bit of dark chocolate and a hint of raisin-like oxidation that's rather faint. Excellent

T: Tastes like coffee up front. And on the mid-palate as well. And finish. 'Nuff said. Actually not, 'cos there's some bittersweet chocolate to accompany the coffee. Maybe a little one-dimensional but in a good way, 'cos the coffee is simply beautiful in this beer. There is also a pleasing level of sweetness to this beer with some dark roasted malts and a hint of vanilla. Mildly drying on the finish with more (surprise!) coffee.

M: Fairly light in body, this beer had great carbonation and an excellent finish that's heavy on coffee bitterness and flavor

D: This is the nightcap that will make me crack another. Great stuff.

Thanks to Jerz for sharing this beer. I believe he got it as an extra from jojomdma.

A - Pours black, with about a finger width of head and had very nice lacing.

S - Smell is of a deep coffee with some espresso in there. There's plenty of roast, and I get just a faint hint of ash and/or charcoal.

T - the taste is similar to the nose, but I swear I got a tinge of a metallic taste at first. It left as the beer opened up a bit, though. Coffee and the roast is the overriding taste in this beer.

M - Medium body and high carbonation...slightly off for a stout, but it works, I guess, with the coffee flavor.

D - OK on drinkability. Glad I got to try it, but I'll stick with Speedway Stout if I want a coffee-style stout.
