Notes: Formerly called "Peruvian Morning"

A bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout made with freshly roasted Emy J's coffee. This beer is as complex as it gets. Flavors of vanilla, tannins, and coffee meld together to create a flavor as deep as the ravines of the Peruvian Andes.

Served in a snifter

A - It pour black with less than an inch of mocha head. There is some lacing.

S - The coffee was noticeable immediately. After some warming the bourbon begins to come through with caramel and vanilla.

T - The taste follows the same path. Initially, it was coffee. Approaching room temperature released the bourbon flavors. The coffee faded to the background while caramel and bourbon replaced it. A lingering bourbon aftertaste was the final result.

M - Smooth and full with low carbonation.

O - I haven't been this worried about an infection since that time I hooked up with a chick in the parking lot of a Red Roof Inn. Luckily, both instances were infection free. This is an excellent coffee stout, but the infection rumors had me apprehensive. I am enjoying this beer very much on a borderline chilly Independence Day eve.

So good. Overall I feel that it is an incredibly accurate BCBS clone if anything, but the more subdued alcohol content makes it it's own thing. Delicious brew and we'll worth chasing after. I'ma enjoy a second, cheers!

Deep, dark mahogany brown body; one-finger thick head, dense and creamy. Incredible dark roast coffee aroma; slight notes of rich milk chocolate. Big coffee-forward flavor blending nicely with a bitter chocolate and tobacco combination; some alcohol presence. Heavy body yet seems watery; warm and boozy.

The aroma and flavor are outstanding with this beer. Coffee and chocolate with a near-perfect balance of booziness makes this quite the treat.

Very dark beer, not quite black, but close. Very little head, just minimal lacing on the sides of the glass.

Coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, and a hint of bourbon in the smell.

Chocolate, coffee, dried fruit are what I notice first. It finishes with warm bourbon notes and a lingering bitterness that is more like dark chocolate than hops.

The feel is probably the weakest part of this one, it seems thin for the style, would prefer a more silky smooth sensation.

In spite of the thin feel, there is a lot of flavor here. The different flavors blend well, leaving what I feel is a very nice dessert beer. This is barrel aging done right, enhancing the flavors without become overwhelming.

From a 12oz bottle, undated. Served in a tulip.

Pours an impenetrable black with a scant half-finger of thin, short-lived beige head. Leaves a thin fizzy cap and collar.

Smell is sweet and malty. Despite the bourbon barrel, what I'm smelling is rum; coffee sweetened with brown sugar and rum.

Oh, my goodness, that's fine! Taste is smooth, lightly sweet and eggy, like creme brûlée. Perked coffee, cocoa, walnut, coconut and vanilla. The coffee flavour is mild, again like perked coffee sweetened with brown sugar and the bourbon barrel character is understated, just a wee dab of tannin and liqueur.

Feel is smooth as silk and creamy, medium-thick bodied with adequate carbonation. Very, very slight boozy fumes in the sinuses and warmth in the gullet.

Overall, a worthy stout! Everything's as it should be: barrel character is present but not overwhelming, coffee is noticeable but not dominant, brew is sweet but not syrupy. No technical flaws detected. A most excellent breakfast beer.

2012 Vintage Reviewed 03-05-2012Poured from a 12oz bottle into a chalice

A: Pours dark brown/black and almost completely opaque. There is a tiny tan head which dissipates immediately.

S: There are strong notes of coffee and chocolate. Alcohol and bourbon follow closely. As the beer warms, coffee comes to dominate the smell in a very good way.

T: Big, boozy bourbon leads out the gate, melding nicely with some sweet vanilla. Espresso and dark chocolate. There is a definite charred oak character which provides a little smokiness. Overall the flavor is a mix of sweet and bitter. The chocolate and coffee offer little in the way of sweetness, but then there is a surge of sweet vanilla in the background to even it out.

M: Medium bodied and a little sticky. Moderate to high carbonation.

O: Bourbon notes are subdued, but coffee and vanilla are both strong and delicious. Pretty enjoyable all around.

2013 Vintage Reviewed 03-11-2013
Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a dark, espresso brown color. Completely opaque. There is a mocha color head that fades quickly to a very thin, oily cap.

S: Vanilla and oaky bourbon leap out of the glass. I also detect notes of cappuccino, brown sugar and milk chocolate.

T: The coffee flavor takes a front seat here and dominates the mid-palate. Rich chocolate, vanilla and molasses take some of the edge off. The finish is all coffee and vanilla milk chocolate with a light touch of alcohol.

M: Oh so smooth and creamy! Low carbonation with the perfect hint of alcohol all over one of the creamiest, delectable mouthfeels I've had the pleasure of experiencing.

O: Amazing. Certainly better than last years version, which is really saying something.

12oz bottle, no date, 2018 release. Pours somewhat hazy brown with a medium sized light khaki head. Smells and tastes of fresh roasted coffee, bourbon, roasted malt, and caramel; good intensity. The barrel flavors have a noticeable stout profile from the last beer it was aged on. Very clean taste throughout; almost too clean/stripped. Light sweetness and medium bitterness. The alcohol is noticeable even at 8.5%. Thinner body and above average carbonation for the style yet drinkable. Overall, it has a nice fresh coffee taste and good intensity, but is a little too clean with not enough heft.

Received this in a Dark Lord day in person trade.

Pours brown in color. There are some ruby highlights, but this is no where as dark as what I was expecting from a Imperial Stout. A good one inch of head that is off white. Plenty of carbonation running up the glass and rebuilding whatever head is trying to go away. Smell is wonderful and glorious bourbon. Not over the top and obtrusive, but there and dominant. Some slight cocoa and coffee bean underneath as well.
Taste is more of the bourbon, but with some oak and a bit more chocolate coming in than you can detect from the flavor. Matter of fact, there's a lot more chocolate coming through in the flavor and it's very nice. A little thin in the mouthfeel department. This is a very solid beer, and easily my favorite that I've had from Central Waters. Would love to get some more of this.

This beer pours an opaque dark brown color. The head is a half inch of tan foam that recedes slowly into nice lacing. The aroma is very nice balance of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, and graham cracker. Very mouthwatering. I could smell this beer all day long. The taste is similar to the aroma in that there is a lot of complexity with many different parts intermingling with each other. The malty chocolate and vanilla flavors come through first with a creamy coffee presence in the finish. The mouthfeel is full bodied with appropriately low carbonation, and a silky texture. Overall, this is a very well crafted beer. A great beer in fact. I would drink this beer daily if it were available for me to do so.

Bottled Jan 2012

A= Pours a nice looking deep brown color. For some reason after seeing it fall from the glass and seeing the brown highlights I don't feel comfortable calling it a black color. The head is a little small and falls fast into a thin layer on top of the glass with very little lacing.
S= The smell is a nice mix of bourbon and coffee. The coffee may be fading a bit after the time, I hate to say. It seems a little light on the nose though.

T= The taste is a lot like the nose. A nice bourbon taste with some coffee backing it up. The stout base doesn't really come through as much as I would have hoped. It's almost like an irish coffee.

M= A nice amount of carbonation in it. The flavor doesn't linger too much.

O= I'm a little disapointed to tell you the truth. I've heard a ton about this beer. It was a little bit of a let down. A solid coffee and broubon beer but the stout itself doesn't impress much. Boost the beer flavor while keeping the coffee and bourbon the same.

L - 1/2 finger tan head atop a pitch black body.

S - coffee, caramel, molasses, chocolate, a hint of barrel.

T - oak, vanilla, chocolate, honey, molasses, with just a bit of coffee. The barrel is much more of a factor in the taste. Low bitterness. Moderate-low sweetness. Moderate booziness.

F - medium body and carb.

O - if this had a thicker body it would be a world beater. As-is it’s super tasty. Really glad to get a chance to try it.
