12 ounce bottle- 2010 edition. Pours inky black cola. very little head with some fine mocha lacing. Nose- wood, light vanilla, sweet malts, milk chocolate. Not much in terms of coffee though which is surprising. Taste- initial sip is bourbon heat followed by an acrid black coffee taste and wood dryness. As the beer warms the malt sweetness comes partially through. Medium bodied with higher carbonation. Finish is quite bitter and hot. I think this is one that could sit for awhile to smooth out.

A 12oz bottle from a generous BA who traded me a ton of great Central Waters beers @ Dark Lord Day. Thanks and I raise this snifter to you! I had this for the first time @ DLD 09 and found it to be memorable, even one of the best I had that weekend. So I traded for some but they were acquired late summer and had unfortunately subdued in fresh coffee flavor. So, this was one I had to take a fresh shot at to review!

Poured into my trusty Founders snifter, this beer looks great! Black, opaque, and a small head. Just a classic looking stout!

Smell is just a touch muted. The coffee, bourbon, wood, vanilla, and milk chocolate could just be a bit more expressive.

Taste was better than the smell. While this isn't up there with KBS and BCBS, it's an awesome barrel aged coffee stout. The bourbon and coffee dominate, and they work really, really well together. There's a great vanilla from the bourbon barrels, and the liquor is nicely integrated. The coffee is good too, but it hides any malt characteristics. I'd like to get some more roasted or chocolate malt to sweeten this out. The bourbon/coffee aftertaste is perfect in terms of bitterness. A great beer, almost on the top of it's class.

Mouthfeel is a touch thin but still good. Nicely carbed but just not enough malty viscosity.

Good beer, only falls a bit short of KBS which is my standard for any bourbon coffee stout.

Pours a very nice black color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy tan head, with some nice little islands and sticky lacing left behind. The nose is very nice of malts, bourbon, slight oak, some roast notes, chocolate/toffee. The taste is slightly sweet, malty, very nice touch of bourbon, some oak notes, chocolate/toffee. Full-Medium body, the ABV is alittle upfront on this brew. Very Drinkable, this brew really surprised the shit out of me, very very nice, highly recommended.

Pours a deep, dark, opaque black color, with a nice cap of off-white foam. Huge aromas of bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate, a very nice coffee imperial stout, made so much better by the time spent in the bourbon barrels. An outstanding beer, maybe ½ a notch below GI Bourbon County Coffee Stout and KBS.

Dark brown with ruby highlights, and a tan one finger head with nice retention. Smells of coffee, chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla.

The flavor is not overly complex, but quite good, and also consists of coffee, chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla. Is somewhat sweet, and is balanced nicely with coffee bitterness.

Medium bodied, smooth, creamy, very easy to drink, and very good. I will seek this out again.

First, thanks to kbutler1 for giving me this beauty as an extra in our trade at DLD.

A: pours black with a light brown tint and a very thin, light brown head. no lacing to speak of

S: delicious on the nose. getting a wonderful mix of coffee, bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut, nuts, roasted malts. Almost smells like a almond joy

T: dark roasted malts hit my tongue first but then comes the bourbon, vanilla, lightly roasted coffee beans

M: feels oily and maybe a little light for the style it is. carbonation is very light. warming alcohol on the throat as it goes down

D: goes down very easy at 8.5%. little to no alcohol burn. a bit sweet but the dry bitterness makes it so I could drink several of these with no problem. good early morning brew

Overall, very glad I got to try this. Anyone who likes a good bourbon barrel beer with a hint of coffee is sure to enjoy this one.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to klikger for this bottle!

A- Poured a blacl color when held to the lights had amber highlights. One finger tan head that dies down after a minute of standing still. Light sticky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- There was a mix of coffee, chocolate, light vanilla, some oak, and very faint bourbon. All the aroma was big into the coffee and chocolate I felt throughout. As this beer warmed the oak and bourbon came out a little more.

T- The flavor was interesting with a big coffee blast in the front. The bourbon seemed to come out of no where with this beer as well. The vanilla and oak seemed to come out more when the beer was warmed closer to room temp. Vanilla notes speckled the beer I thought along with a hint of a caramel sweetness. This beer was still a little hot for my liking although I wasn't really bothered by it.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. At times this seemed watery in the mouth. Nice roasted malts and coffee notes on the palate with a sweet vanilla light bourbon burn in the aftertaste. Flavors were clean throughout the beer itself.

D- This beer was fantastic! I almost forgot all about it and then at DLD I got a bottle and remembered that I wanted to try it. Was well worth the surprise and wait. Will be looking for more bottles in the future of this!

"JAN" punched out on the month code on the side of the label. I took this one out of my 38 degree fridge and let it sit in 70 degree house temp for 40 minutes. It feel perfect for me to crack open now, but if you need to know the exact serving temp, do the math :) .

This one poured thinner then I would expect for a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. Dark brown overall with, lightly cloudy brown highlights. The head left nothing to desire, disappearing to a small ring in under 30 seconds, hmm...

The nose has sweet, caramel, light vanilla and oak. I had a hard time pulling any bourbon characterists off the nose.

The flavor was much better then I anticipated from the nose.. Medium to full flavor mix of bourbon notes, sweet caramel, vanilla and hints of coconut. I get some wood qualities, like oak in the mix, as well. Very nice flavor and easy to enjoy.

The mouthfeel is a tad too thin for me for this style stout and I would have liked less carbonation overall.

All in all, a nice beer but not a defining example for its style. I'd drink this on occasion if it was readily available to me and not too outlandishly priced.

Reviewing from last months notes. Bottled in January 2010. Poured into a snifter. Thanks to oach for this one

A: Nice dark chocolate brown to leaves a thin sandy colored head. The head dissipates pretty quickly. No lacing present

S: A good mix of roasted malt, coffee, some vanilla and bourbon

T: Big coffee and bourbon presence. Vanilla and some roastiness join in after a bit. Still pretty hot, should have sat on this one. Seems like it has a toasted coconut aftertaste

M: Light to medium bodied. Thinner then most imperial stouts that I've had before. Good, light carbonation

D: Fairly good, but it was too early to open this one. Reminds me a lot of GI's Bourbon County Stout, but less intense

The beer pours dark brown to black with a tan head. The aroma is lots of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is more of the same with the addition of vanilla, oak and bourbon. Surprisingly, the chocolate is more dominant than the coffee but this is an outstanding barrel-aged beer that lives up to the high ratings that it receives. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Pours black with dark brown hints along the edges. Head was minimal, maybe 3/4 inches. Dark tan color that disippated fairly quickly, leaving a light film on the top of the beer. Not much lacing, but it does appear that some small crushed coffee beans made it into the bottle.

S: Dark rich chocolate with espresso or darkly roasted coffee. As the beer warmed, caramel, vanilla and some oak (or other wood) become evident. Perhaps a little molasses and raisin as well (lending some sweet notes). Complex.

T: Coffee and more coffee. Seems a little on the sweet side. More caramel with lots of dark chocolate. Hints of vanilla. A little hot on the finish. Finish is long and smooth. Very much like walk drinking an espresso, except less bitterness. Tasty.

M: Medium body, medium to low carbonation. A little on the light side for an imperial stout, but not overly so.

D: This was very nice. The bourbon flavors blend well with the espresso and chocolate. While a touch on the sweet side, this was a very smooth beer that has a great finish. I would look for this again.

12oz bottle into a Snifter glass

A- Pours a solid black with a fluffy light brown almost tan head that leaves little to no lacing on the way down.

S- Dark roasted malts with a mellowed coffee that blends well with a great smelling vanilla and bourbon.

T- Thick dark malts with a strong vanilla coffee backround that complements the bourbon alcohol sting that hides in the backround.

M- Full bodied with lower carbonation and little bitterness in the finish. A slight dryness from the coffee lingers though.

Overall this is a great Imperial stout that is definitely a must try. So complex and full of flavors. How could you say no?

Huge thanks to Andrew for sharing this one last week out of the blue. One day I will really have to repay this guy for all the great beers he randomly shares. This one pours a black or very dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma of ancho chile, dry coffee beans, and bourbon. The taste has bourbon, chocolate syrup, malt, and peculiarly the coffee is much lighter than in the nose. The finish brings roasted malts, cookie, and spice. Mouthfeel is full and nicely slick and oily. This beer was tasty, but somehow it lacked the depth for me to truly enjoy it as much as I had hoped I would. Good beer.

A: Pours a light brown color, in the glass it is black with a bit of tan head at the top. Which makes sense, because if the head was at the bottom.. lord knows what I would be drinking.

S: Chocolate, and coffee. Lots of coffee and a bit of booze, possibly some oak and bourbon as well. A very nice smelling beer.

T: Sweet followed by coffee. Bourbon and oak present, but it is a bit on the boozy side.

M: A little light for what I was expecting. Slightly watery. Carbonation may be a little high, but not out of style.

D: A good beer for sure. But a bit boozy, and not the most elegant version of this style.. perhaps it is a shame that I drank a KBS last night, and it is still in my memory.

A- At first the body appears to be a very dark brown, almost black color-but when light is shone through flashes of translucent bright cherry red are seen. Head fades to a thin collar.

S-Nose is quite interesting. Impressions of coffee and dark roasted malt come through initially-but dark fruit like raisin and plum are also quite noticeable.

T- Upfront dark fruits come through the most but there is a nice roasted malt component in the background. The roasted malt character intensifies and adds some bitterness-but nothing intense or overpowering and there is also a slight alcohol burn for the finish.

M-Medium to heavy weight body and medium carbonation. A slight alcohol presence but body remains pretty smooth.

D- This is a very good, interesting imperial stout and a nice ending to the tasting. The ABV is minimally noticeable. I found this brew to be quite drinkable and unique. The fruitiness blends well with the coffee characters. I'd love to have this one again!

Lightly chilled bottle into a glass. A generous extra from beerwolf77. Todd's the man!

A: Pours a dark brown body, translucent mahogany at the edges but darkening to a pitch black in the center of the glass. The foam is light tan in color; it's short-lived, but it leaves some spots of lace down the sides.

S: The sweet aromas of burnt-toasted caramel and crushed vanilla beans quickly reach my nose first. Can't miss the coffee, either. Chocolate and tannins are restrained, but the booze is not. I like the nose on KBS better; it's not bad for a barrel-aged imperial stout, but it doesn't stand out. The heat is a major drawback.

T: Like the nose, this is pretty bourbon-forward, delivering rich, sweet flavors that are reminiscent of burnt caramel and brown sugar. Crushed coffee beans are strongly evident. Bittersweet dark chocolate and vanilla add some delicious complexity. The finish brings out tannins and a light spice bite (along with some boozy heat), but the aftertaste is still sweet and bourbony.

M: Medium-bodied. It's not as chewy as I would expect from an imperial stout. I'd be willing to overlook that, but it has some heat in the finish that burns a bit, and I feel that would be suppressed with a thicker body.

D: This beer is up against some tough competition. Coffee imperial stouts are getting more popular, and there are a couple of other competitors in this particular coffee-bourbon style (KBS and BCBCS come to mind). On the whole, I like this beer, though I feel its competitors are better.

Thanks to Craig and/or Alicia for this one (not sure who sent me this particular bottle).

A: The pour is a dark brown color with some red highlights when the glass is held up to the light. A mild tan head forms on top.

S: The nose is full of bourbon, vanilla, and coffee. There's a nice roastiness to it along with a touch of chocolate, molasses, and oak.

T: The flavor is quite interesting as the barrel characteristics of bourbon, vanilla, and alcohol come through, but there's a bit of a spiciness to it as well. The coffee is strong, perhaps too strong for some (but I enjoy it).

M: The body is a bit on the thin side for an imperial stout, but still fairly substantial. The carbonation is is a bit high.

D: A really complex beer. Even with the barrel aging and a significant ABV, the alcohol presence is fairly minimal. I'm glad to have several more of these.

A: This brew pours a very dark brown, almost black with a cream colored head that leaves some nice lacing and film on the glass and surface. Carbonation is cecent as well.

S: Most dominant on the nose is coffee, along with hints of chocolate, vanilla, and a bit of coconut. Oak is present in the backround.

T: Like the smell, but more intense. Coffee, chocolate, and dried dark fruits blast the palate. Then the oak comes into play. Vanilla, coconut, and wood enhance the taste, with a mildly dry hop finish. Alcohol is present, but very tolerable.

M: Medium to full-bodied. For the style, it's slightly thin, but still very smooth.

D: This beer is perfect for those getting into bourbon barrel-aged brews. It's smooth, not overwhelming, and very good. Definitely something I am looking forward to trying again in the near future.

12oz bottle (Bottled Jan 2010) received as an extra in a trade with kbutler1. Thanks Kevin! Poured into a Brooklyn snifter.

A - Pours an extremely dark brown...just a shade shy of black. A thin 1/2 finger of slightly fizzy dark tan head forms and stays for a short time before disappearing to leave behind a thin collar.

S - Bourbon up front with some vanilla, brown sugar and caramel with a hint of molasses in the background. Coffe aroma is very faint but definitely there in the background. A good smelling barrel aged beer.

T - Flavor starts with black coffee up front, some vanilla, bourbon and some slightly sweet caramel and brown sugar. A bit of alcohol, a touch on the heat.

M - Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied. Carbonation is somewhat on the high side. Every sip leaves a long lasting tingle on the lips, tongue and sides of the mouth. There is only a little bit of heat, but the tingle is impressively large...like afer sipping on a shot of liquor.

D - Good overall barrel aged stout. Not overpowering and much more than just a sipper. Aroma is quite complex and enjoyable...flavor is good, but a notch behind the aroma. Tingle all over the mouth is interesting and unusual. Definitely a worthy BA stout. Glad I had the opportunity to try it.

Pours a very dark brown. Nice tan head that stayed a good while. Sticky lacing down the glass.

Most of the aroma is coffee. A little bit of roast malts but mostly coffee.

Wow. Taste is nice. A little too much coffee IMO but the bourbon and oak makes it nice and smooth. Nice balance of stout flavors just a little too much coffee.

Mouthfeel is great. Great carb.

Overall a tasty beer that is not too much. Some stouts can just be too intense. This one is good. Get it if you can. Pretty surprised this one isn't rated higher.

A - opaque brown, not much head, lacing all but vanished very quickly

S - coffee, chocolate, vanilla, hints of berry and oak with a little booziness too

T - wow, bitter chocolate, bourbon and coffee (obviously), a bit of cherry and vanilla, definite oakiness and almost peppery finish. extremely deep, currant, plum and molasses coming more to the fore as the beer warms

M - a bit sharp, a tad over-carbonated, but excellent body

Overall - I'd call this a malt bomb, but it marries my love of coffee and beer (and bourbon) nicely. Delightfully rich, I wish we served this at the coffee shop I work at.

Went to Hudson bowl with some friends, and convinced them to let me stop at Chicone's really quick. Glad I did because now I can try this!

Pours a seemingly deep black with a light tan head sitting on top. I noticed that on the pour, the liquid coming out of the bottle looked like a dark brown ale, and light was visible through it, but in the glass it appeared pitch black. When held into the light, it actually looks like a brown ale. Light is definitely visable through this sucker. Anyways, the head is light tan, has decent retention and leaves some nice lacing.

The nose starts out amazing, with chocolate and vanilla, coffee notes and roasted malts. I get a light bourbon character in the finish. As it warms, everything is kind of taken over by the roasted malts, which I didn't really expect.

The taste is good, with a strong emphasis on the roasted malts, chocolate and vanilla. It's much harder than I thought it would be to pick up the subtle coffee notes. Bourbon plays another small role in the overall complexity of this brew.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a slight carbonation bite and light alcohol character. Drinkability is pretty good.

Overall, while an excellet brew, I was expecting just a little bit more. I've come to expect great things from Central Waters, so while this brew is great by any other standards, this one fell just a bit short for me.

A: Pours a dark mahogany, with a sparse tan filmy head. Looks to be maybe a shade lighter than Bourbon Barrel Stout.

S: Lots going on here--Rich cold pressed coffee, sweet oak-vanilla and caramelly bourbon. Smells sweet, but with depth.

T: Sweet malt and corn upfront, moving into a light and forgiving coffee acidity to tickle the tongue. Bourbon slickness is felt on the tongue in the finish, with nice lingering espresso and oak (vanilla) and bourbon (caramel) notes. An earthy hop flavour resides somewhere in there as well, additing to the overall complexity.

M: Smooth and creamy throughout, with a bit of spirity bourbon in the finish.

D: The complexity and subtlety with which all the ingredients are worked in is astounding. If you're looking for a HUGE, viscous, imperial stout--this isn't what you're looking for. But for a tasty complex quaff--this is the ticket.

Peruvian Morning possesses the same "grainy" (though not unpleasant) corn flavour the BBS had, so I believe it may have something to do with the barrels they use. I know they said at the brewery that they used Heaven's Hill barrels (among others) for their BBBW. This would be great on a Sunday morning with sausages drizzled with real maple syrup...Cinnamon rolls would work well too.

A: Pours a very dark brown with no light passing through. A pillowly looking light tan head retains itself well.

S: front is coffee and chocolate followed by vanilla and oak. The bourbon character is quite tame on the nose.

T: like the nose, lots of chocolate and coffee notes on the front. Following this is a huge presence of bourbon with notes of vanilla and oak finishing with a considerable amount of heat. Very well balanced with a nice long finish that leaves a delicious flavor of coffee bourbon on the palate

MF: thick and viscous body, low carbonation

D: this is a very tasty beer...lots of complex flavors that begin to really open up as the beer warms. A great sipper for sure.

2010 Batch.

Poured into Bruery Snifter.

The pour is a clear copper brown, but when it settles in the glass it is dark brown, near black. Pours hardly and tan head.

Aroma: Bourbon, vanilla, and coffee right up front. Some oak in the background. The bourbon is subtle, but it works well for this beer. It has a nice roasted malt flavor coming from it. I am already enjoying this.

Taste: The coffee and roasted malt flavors are right up front and then the bourbon, vanilla, and oak kick in after the roasted malts settle a bit. I have never had a ba stout with coffee and it sure is interesting. I am not sure what I think of it yet. It also has some fresh earthy hops and chocolate, dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and bubbly (more carbonation than the pour would suggest). It is also a bit roasty and slightly smooth. A relatively full body goes along with this. Ends with a big roasted aftertaste that is very dry.

Overall, this is a very interesting beer. It has a lot of flavors that I like in a stout and I think they are combined well. However, the mouthfeel seems to be a tad off and the coffee/roasted malt seems to overpower the bourbon notes. I think time may do this beer wonders as the coffee flavors will drop and the bourbon will begin to round this beer out.

Edit: 2012 edition in my glass right now and this stuff is amazing. I originally gave this a 4.1, but I was a noob then. This stuff is legit and you cannot go wrong for the price. I am stocking up on this beer. Wow, what an underrated beer. This has everything I want in a beer.
