12 ounce bottle into snifter; 2017 vintage, bottled on 4/11/2017. Pours crystal clear deep reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, grapefruit, apricot, apple, orange peel, pine, caramel, maple, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, coconut, brown bread, and biscuit; with light notes of chocolate, coffee, smoke, charred wood, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, citrus/pine hops, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Mild increasing booze in the aromas as it warms, but never overwhelming. Taste of huge raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, grapefruit, apricot, apple, orange peel, pine, caramel, maple, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, coconut, brown bread, and biscuit; with light notes of chocolate, coffee, smoke, charred wood, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, cherry, grapefruit, apricot, apple, orange peel, pine, caramel, maple, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, coconut, brown bread, biscuit, light chocolate/char, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, citrus/pine hops, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome malt/bitter/spiciness balance; with zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a smooth, creamy/bready/sticky/tannic, and slightly slick/silky/syrupy/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden; a small pleasant warmth, with very mild barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged American barleywine! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, citrus/pine hops, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Pretty much perfectly balanced between all flavors. Impressive malt complexity and great barrel presence; without being overly boozy, tannic, or drying. This improved on the hop presence as it warmed up, balancing itself with dark fruitiness. A highly enjoyable offering.

CENTRAL WATERS BBA BARLEYWINE ALE 5/23/17

Since CW's BBA Scotch ale drew the best rating I have ever bestowed on a brew, and their BBA Imperial Stout is also highly awesome, when I saw this in a local store tonight I had to try it.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip.

a; Clear copper/ruby with a four inch thick offwhite/light tan head which receded to thick surface foam and patterned dense lacing. Superb.

s; Mild dark fruit,

t; Follows the nose with more strength along with some whiskey notes over a mild caramel malt base and a hefty hop and/or alcohol bite in the back of the throat. Sweetish finish.

m; Medium, very smooth with some carbonation tingle, although at first the heavy alcohol bite tends to distract from that.

o; A powerful, flavorful brew. The alcohol presence is more obvious than the whiskey flavor, although it mellows out some. Slightly fruitier than the Scotch ale, as a barleywine should be, but with the higher ABV the alcohol notes tend to obscure them somewhat after a few sips. Later they return with strength, as does the aroma. Really not that far afield from the much more famous (and more expensive, if and when you can find it on Black Friday) Goose Island BCB Barleywine other than perhaps some density and a few ABV points.

L- Pours a hazy, amber red, with a thin, creamy, off-white head. A little carbonation.
S- Nice, malty, hoppy, bready smell. a little caramel backing as well.
T- Dark, caramelized fruits that linger. Paired with a nice malt, and a hoppy, slight bourbon finish. All comes together well. As it warms, more bourbon, vanilla and oak comes out.
F- Very smooth with the bite of bitterness out the door that lingers. The oak barrell presence does a nice job of smoothing out all edges.
O- An extremely smooth Barleywine that does not forget the hop. Bourbon presence is not overbearing. The dark fruit taste is wonderful.

2017 vintage, have a few more I will be saving for a bit... Likely to revisit on here in the future.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter at cellar temperature. Leaves a half finger beige head. Gorgeous dark amber-ruby color. Just slightly murky but light penetrates through. Moderate thick lacing rims the glass.

Aroma is of dark ripe fruit, bourbon-like caramel, vanilla, oak, spices, and roasted malts. Alcohol does not play a major role here.

Taste is a mix of bourbon, dark fruit, spices, and oak. Definitely do taste the alcohol as the beer warms but it blends very well with the other flavors. More fruity than hoppy but there is a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is heavy with a bit of carbonation.

Certainly not a beer to drink every weekend. One to savor slowly over the course of an hour or two. A complex and heavy experience. Very well done.

Bottle from 2015 poured into a snifter.

Pours a murky amber color. Good amount of lacing with a finger light tan colored head that goes down very quickly even with an aggressive pour.

Smell is spicy!! Caramel and almost a vanilla pumpkin spice to it. Huge plum, raising, fig, apple, and brown sugar.

Taste is just as nice as the smell. The raisin and caramel is upfront and then the warmth of the bourbon comes in afterwards. More fig, brown sugar, vanilla pumpkin, and just a lovely spice to it in general. Has some sharp apple and a bitter pine to it also. Reminds me of fall weather.

Feel is spectacular. Full bodied and plenty of barrel presence to it which makes it a perfect sipping beer.

Overall I may be biased due to my love of Barleywines and especially BA Barleywines but damn this beer was truly a treat. This is just as good, if not better, than Backwoods Bastard / BA Bigfoot in my opinion. I would love to do a tasting of all three at some point!
