This has been one of my favorite beers since first trying it about five years ago. I've settled into drinking it at 2 years past bottling- that's when I enjoy it the most. So this review is a 2014 bottle opened about 2.5 years later and poured into a 12 oz snifter.

Look- Slow pour to avoid disturbing sediment. I've noticed that when this beer is younger than 2 years, the sediment is still very fine and I don't mind getting some of it in the glass. But at 2 years+ you see a substantial increase in coagulated sediment. It adds a tannic vanilla flavor, so I don't mind a touch of it, but it stays suspended for a long time in this thick beer. Pours a dark ruby red, very bright while pouring, deep and dark in the glass. No head, but some of that may be the slow pour. Beautiful beer.

Smell- Cherries, leather, tobacco, bourbon, and a ton of malt. Really comforting aroma and very close to BCBBW @ two years old. Younger bottles will see an increased hop presence (even with a year in the barrel) and a less sweet aroma.

Taste- Blends sweet cherry, leather, tobacco, bourbon, oak, and rich dark chocolate cake like a very well-balanced cocktail. The end of a fall day full of raking leaves, putting on storm windows, grilling out one last time before winter, and having a small fire in the backyard pit. Delicious.

Feel- Sticky enough to be dessert on its own. The alcohol heat stays with you just a touch.

Overall- At 2 years this beer never disappoints me. Any older and you start to get substantial sediment interference. Any younger and the flavors haven't quite mellowed yet. My only other 5/5 barleywine is King Henry.
