2015 bottle opened 2017-02-17 for a side-by-side comparison with Sucaba 2015 and Bourbon County Barleywine 2014.

I like the way it looks. It has a rich, dark caramel color, and while you can't see through it, it looks crisp, unlike the Sucaba, which is equally opaque but looks cloudy. Moderate carbonation is visible.

The smell on CW's BA BW is kind of like the smell from a glass of straight rye whiskey. There's some malt and brown sugar, but mostly it smells like rye and alcohol.

There is bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel, and malt in the flavor. However, the alcohol is assertive and adds a bit of burn on the palate, and the finish is surprisingly bitter and hoppy.

Mouthfeel is pretty good. It's oily without being too sticky, but it finishes dry and light.

Overall, it's good, but not as good as I remember. I bought a 4-pack of this beer in 2015, and this is my last bottle of it. BCBBW has aged beautifully, but I think CW's offering might be better fresh or maybe within one year of its bottling. After almost two years, the alcohol still burns, but the sweet malty caramel has fallen off a bit.

This is a sweet, sticky, boozy barleywine full of the flavors of bourbon, vanilla, and dark fruits. My favorite barleywine to date with the possible exception of BCBBW, which I have also had only once.

Central Waters tap > crowler > Central Waters tulip glass. Was canned about 3 months ago.

Dark brown color with hints of ruby and pink when held to the light. Small ring of head.

Lots of barrel character on the nose, with brown sugar, soaked fruits namely prune and banana, some slight wet oak.

Some burnt sugar in the flavor, with prunes, bourbon, but really flat and old tasting.

Feel is rather flat, old, I think I waited too long on this crowler.

Overall, I don't think I'm doing this beer justice. Waiting 3 months on this particular crowler I think did some damage. Very undercarbonated, and as a result the flavors do not pop, they merely sit. I can tell this beer is so much more. Ah well. Maybe I'll find it in a 4 pack someday.

P.S. I'm gonna pop a carbonation drop in a sanitized glass bottle, pour the rest of the crowler in there, cap it and check it in a week to see if it's done any better.

Released early 2014; drank 6/17/14 @ the Yarchives.

Orange/plum murkiness.

HUGE cream head with hints of crimson; thick lace.

Burnt sugar, caramel & wet oak tree nose.

Thick mouthfeel.

Sweet caramel with hints of mocha up front in the flavor; acorns, figs, dried plums & booze on the finish. Sadly, pickle juice hints emerge as it warms. Monstrously complex, but years away from being enjoyable.
