We are huge fans of rye here at Central Waters, and using rye barrels and rye malts are some of our favorite things. In this beer, we pair the smooth sweetness of vanilla with the spicy, dry notes of rye - a match made in heaven for our famous barrel-aged stout. This beer is aged for a full year in rye barrels, imparting those delectable flavors and aromas, then combined with vanilla to enhance the wood notes and create a smooth, well rounded barrel-aged stout.

poured from a 12oz bottle into a CW snifter. pours that typical CW dark brown but gathers in the glass nearly black with a decently thick mocha brown foam cap. rich aromas of chocolate, vanilla, oak and spicy rye. taste follows with a decadent swirl of chocolate and vanilla frosting creaminess with a nice rye barrel finish. barrel is slightly toned down due to the vanilla addition but it all ties together wonderfully. medium-full, vanilla cream mouthfeel. nicely carbonated. really enjoyed this one.

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip pint glass. Pours an opaque dark brown with a small, fizzy head. Flavors feature well integrated whiskey, vanilla, dark roasty malts, spicy rye, and hints of dark fruit. Very smooth for the abv. Delicious stuff.

This is a very interesting brew in that the nose and taste give off different elements. The nose is all about the vanilla whereas the flavor is predominantly about the barrel and the rye. Delicious all around.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 10/10/22.

Pours a mostly opaque dark cola color, with a one inch foamy head and light foamy cling. Aromas of vanilla, roasted malt, rye, chocolate, some oak and char, light bourbon. Flavors of rye bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, less roasted malt, caramel, a little char. Has a bit of a spicy flavor. Smooth, a little creamy, a very good fuller body, well carbonated.

The rye and vanilla stand out, the bourbon character of the barrels shows best in the flavor. Solid from top to bottom. Well worth a purchase.

Expectations run high, as the opening criteria for rating beer seems to be in high order. For evaluation, two brown twelve ounce bottles were emptied into a clear glass liter mug. The brew is the black coffee brown expected. There's no head, other than a brief appearance of something light brown, with bubbles, on top. But, at this ABV, the head is often a first casualty. The aroma is bourbon, or more specifically oak tannins, first. Alcohol is next, then vanilla. Completing the complex smell is a little vanilla and a little less grassy rye. The taste is smoother to the palate than the aroma was to the nose. That's especially noteworthy, as the ABV is amped up to over 13%. Jumping ahead, this has to be among the smoothest drinking brews delivering this much alcohol. The esophagus warms, but the mouth never notices that much presence of alcohol. Also, the alcohol doesn't have any negative impact on the taste. Only during the drying out phase of the finish is it noticed at all. This must be respected for delivering almost all of what is promised. The bourbon barrel aspect is predominant, but fairly well advised on the label. There's just enough vanilla to challenge the tannins and no doubt, the rye softens everything out and adds a subtle grassiness. It all makes a top level Imperial Stout, one of the best, if you can accept the bourbon barrel inclusion.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This smells like roasted malt, spicy rye, earthy bittersweet vanilla, herbal roast, tobacco, and dark chocolate.

As is the case with most Central Waters stouts, this isn’t a big viscous vanilla bomb. It’s a more subtle, thinner take. I’d maybe want a slightly bigger base beer, but the rye and oak dark chocolate are all really tasty here, with a restrained but tasty sweet and earthy vanilla note.

This is medium-to-thin bodied, but quite drinkable, with very little booziness.

Central Waters hasn’t really changed their game in the last 10 years – they’re still churning out easy to get barrel aged beers that rarely disappoint.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours almost black; small khaki head that fades leaving decent retention and okay lacing.

The aromas have some chocolate. Mild vanilla. Mild bourbon. Malts are there.

The flavors are bolder than the nose. The vanilla really comes through in the flavor department without dominating. More chocolate, especially milk chocolate. Some caramel in the mix. Some subtle rye giving it a mild spiciness. The bourbon comes through and blends well with everything without dominating. Solid malt backbone. Subtle sweetness. Lower bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden considering the ABV. I'd consider this one dangerously drinkable.

Mouthfeel is on lighter side of full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, and smooth.

This is a pretty solid barrel-aged stout. Overall it's pretty clean, which is what I've come to expect from a Central Waters barrel-aged beer. The vanilla does its thing without coming off as strong. The barrel characteristics do their thing without dominating. Balance is the key with this one. Not bad at all.

I usually enjoy the tighter, leaner execution central waters brings to their dark beers
But this one is actually crying out for just a little more heft and sweetness. Crazy to say as I’ve spent the last few days drinking egregiously sweet and flabby beers and
now I’m on the opposite side of things. I like the prominent barrel character on this beer, the vanilla somewhat faded but now melding nicely with woody, drying, spicy rye tones. There are secondary dark chocolate notes and a bit of hoppy bitterness. Good beer but not one of my favorites from CW.

Lots of vanilla with a nice bourbon barrel backbone. Super boozy! Wish it was a bit more well rounded.
