Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.05%

Notes / Commercial Description:
De Kleine Dood is a Belgian inspired Weissenbock brewed as a collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. Originally released in summer 2012, De Kleine Dood will be available in spring 2013 on draft and in large format bottles.

When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, De Kleine Dood - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. De Kleine Dood is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, De Kleine Dood is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

Pours a deep caramel auburn kind of color with a light brown head that is in the 1/5" range. Boozy wheat whine like aroma and barrel presence is almost port and sweet like.

Leather, toffee, vanilla, caramel all penetrate immediately with the first sip. Its boozy but not hot. Ample use of wheat to get it this malty. Strong yet smooth. A little bit of banana in there, banana liquor bourbon going on. Carbonation is appropriately softer. Its an interesting mix of spice rack from the yeast and then large swaths of liquor feels but not necessarily a harsh alcohol burn or bitterness.

I've seen it on the shelf while on vacation since I drank it. I passed. Does seem to be a decent value and I would say check it out given that you can get it for under $10 a bomber.

Pour is a chestnut brown, tan head that dissipates quickly, which is to style. Aromas are led by the barrel, with vanilla and oak notes leading the way, then a caramel sweetness on the back end.

Taste is big notes of caramel and toffee, with the oak and vanilla from the barrel complementing those flavors. There's a bit of spritziness associated with the style, but not as much as I'd like. Still, this is a great sipper, especially on a fall evening. Definitely worth acquiring.

L: Pours a dark reddish brown with a khaki head, nice lacing.
S: Bourbon, fig, plum and raisin.
T: Bourbon, vanilla and dark fruit.
F: After 4 ounces I started to feel pretty good. I expected something a bit more chewy, but it's good enuff.
O: I'm not a big fan of Belgium style beers. I'm not sure if I've had a Weizenbock before, especially a barrel aged one, but I will look for this again, one of the best beers I've had! Damn good stuff!

Served from bottle into glass at home. Pours a dark, reddish brown, with short lived tan head. Aroma of raisin, vanilla and bourbon. No hop aroma detectable. Flavor is more dark fruit and lots of bourbon. No hop flavor detectable. The finish is dry and unsurprisingly boozy. Full bodied with low carbonation. Overall this beer drinks exactly like a weissenbock aged in a bourbon barrel. Any Belgian yeast character is undetectable to me, but the beer is still very enjoyable.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark reddish brown color with a large off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong bourbon, caramelized malts, Belgian yeast, vanilla, dark fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of bourbon, vanilla, caramel and dark fruit. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast, wheat and a hearty malt character. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium-to-heavy body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, good kick, good variation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white / off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light messy lacing roaming all around the glass nicely. The smell started off with some sweet dark fruity (raison/plum) qualities flowing into sweet bready malts. The taste was mainly sweet with a delicate spice underneath rolling into the bready malts. Boozy raisins in the aftertaste. Smooth sweet finish (vanilla? - somewhat? Kinda). On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation runs fairly smooth. Overall, weizenbock or Belgian Strong Dark ale? Eh, to me, I say weizenbock with the bourbon barrel qualities coming out exceptionally!
