Thanks to my favorite Bears fan, mnbearsfan, for slinging a bottle of this my way. I owe you some big hugs for this. 22 ounce bottle split with my wife.

The pours looks like a Midwest stout, dark. The nose is lighter than expected, gentle rye whiskey, chocolate, mild sweetness.

Central Waters Rye Barrel Stout: rye whiskey on the Mark McGwire juice. The barrel is here is predominant in a way that’s rather foreign to this brewery, which appears to pride itself on its (awesomely) balanced barrel-aged program. This is a rye shot to the perineum, in a good way. Boozy: another departure. Little roast, little chocolate, little shoulder massage, little sideways smile. Thick, & tasty in a way that I could drink until I found nirvana, or at least a 1:00 PM wake up.

Wildly different from most of the CW barrel-aged program, this is simple, barrel-heavy, without the complexity or subtlety of most of their beers. And? Who gives a rip. Sometimes, simple is good. Or excellent. Which is what this is.

Smell: lots of sweet whiskey vanilla tons of oak some spice milk chocolate but it smells really barrel forward.

Taste: Just like the nose this is really Barrel forward a big sweet whiskey note hits you right upfront and drives through into the finish middle of the mouth more Barrel flavor vanilla toasted coconut fudge in the finish you get some Rye spice more of that sweet whiskey flavor pipe tobacco and a big oakiness that lingers in the aftertaste.

Feel: a little thin for a 13% Stout but it doesn't really take away from the experience. Medium body great carbonation. Silky smooth on the tongue.

Overall: When they say a beer was aged for three years in a barrel you except it to be super barrel forward and it is. There's a noticeable sweet whiskey presence but it never gets overwhelmingly boozy. Central Waters does a great job with there Barrel aged beers. The mouthfeel is always my one knock I have when it comes to there beers but the flavor is always so spot on and it doesn't really take away from the experience. A great beer that Is worth trading for if you can get it for the right price.

On tap at the bottle release on 3/3/17, Different batch then the previous check-in's.

Very nice Rye flavor, balanced. Some chocolate notes. On the thinner side for body, similar to the other reserve series beers.

Very delicious but not as good as the standard bourbon barrel aged stout from Central Waters. The spiciness from the rye barrels was just ok.
