Less bourbon, barrel, sweet & overall flavor then the 2016 batch.

Pours an opaque mahogany (cause I'm feeling poetic) with negligible head that dissipates swiftly. Smells like boozy molasses, very sweet and very lightly tart. The flavor has a lot of barrel and booze, the bottle says it was bottled in 2016 so I'd imagine it was a bit hotter closer to bottling and honestly I would think that it could stand a bit less of that bourbon heat but it's not bad. I tend to dislike the booze flavor in beer too so for bourbon lovers this might be even better fresh out the barrel. Great molasses malt counter to the oak and bourbon also, certainly a fine tasting BA Scotch. Feels real thin, some may consider this a good trait, I like my scotch ales a bit fuller, but you do have to respect how such a big beer can sit so lightly on the palette. I would think that this is a great candidate for the cellar and a perfect brew to split with good company. Sips like a fine spirit and would pair well with red meat and cream sauces. Big and bold but still classic.

2017 vintage bottle.

Pours a pitch black, 1 finger light tan head. Great retention and lacing around the edges of the glass.

Smell is lots of dark fruit, oak, roasted malts, and caramel/bourbon. Very sweet with minimal bitterness.

Taste follows the nose, loads of sweet caramel and roasted malts without the bitterness. Not overly bourbony. More dark fruits and chocolate. Just a hint of booze as it warms.

Feel is medium heavy. Light carbonation.

Overall a very tasty and unique beer. Pick up a few and age some...

Really delicious scotch ale - one of my favorites of all time. Basically black in color with a medium tan head. Aroma is oak, chocolate, vanilla, figs, coconut, and spice. Taste is super creamy, chocolate milk, scotch, more oak, molasses sweetness, raisins, and booze. Finish is a little warm, and is rich enough to make me guess it could be over the 9.5 it actually is. Realy tasty beer.

2016 vintage. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass. It pours a dark cola with a half finger of beige colored head and lacing with excellent retention. The nose is bourbon forward with lots of malt, caramel, peat, smoke, cherry, and raisin. The taste is decadent: caramel, black cherry, raisin, tobacco, peat, and a nice bourbon finish that compliments, and does not overwhelm, the other flavors. The mouth feel is really pleasing: it's creamy, medium-bodied and nicely carbonated. Despite the bourbon presence the 9.5% ABV is well masked. It's delightful to drink. Compared to Backwoods Bastard and Wulver, it's lighter and fruitier with less bourbon kick. This is more of a casual drinker and less of a sipper. It's really good and deserving of its world-class rating.

Poured into a thistle, the appearance was a dark brown close to black in color with a thin off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Filmy lace graces the sides nicely. The aroma takes on big sweet malty cues of caramel, toffee, butterscotch, milk chocolate, smoke, peat, vanilla, dry woodiness all coming together eloquently and so smooth. The flavor melds all of those previously mentioned aromas in sweet dry fashion leading with the vanilla, wood and peat. Subtle woody to earthy to peaty aftertaste. Herbal/peaty and vanilla to woody sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a pure peaty stickiness as it should be and without any cloying-ness. Low carbonation with an exceptional herbal/peaty smoothness rolling over my tongue. Overall, scotch ale, damn straight! Barrel aged, well damn well it is!

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a half inch of off white, foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Pretty sparse lacing.

S: A very alluring aroma of caramel, malt, bourbon, and dark fruit.

T: Tasted of a good shot of malt, lots of caramel and toffee, some of advertised bourbon (not too much, though), dark fruit (plums, raisins), vanilla, a mild smokiness, and a woody quality. The bourbon barrel adds an excellent dimension to the flavor. Incredibly complex and flavorful.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an excellent all around scotch ale. Very much a drinkable beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Snorkel glass.

Appearance: A dark raisin brown body with a light tan head. Only the thinnest of a cap.

Aroma: Malty. Malty. Malty. Rich and sweet with hints of oak and dark fruits: plum/prunes and raisins.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Taste follows suit with the figs, raisins and plums. Some nice smoky like oak in there with a clean feeling. Not even a mention of this one being 9.5%. Really tasty and enjoyable.

Overall: This is a really great beer, to sip and enjoy.
