There is a surprisingly large variety packed into the small half-aisle devoted to beer at this location. The cooler begins with a nice selection of local offerings from Duck-Rabbit, Carolina Brewery, Mother Earth, and more. In addition, the selection of other American craft beers far exceeds what can be found at local supermarkets with a number of offerings from Founders, Stone, Sierra Nevada, and other nationally-distributed brands. The option to create your own six-pack can be a bit pricey depending on the beers selected, but it is a nice option to have. Finally, the end-cap-sized set of shelves devoted to imports is small, but it is packed with great beers from around the world. Overall, the beer selection is given only a small portion of the store, but that small portion is densely packed with nice options at generally reasonable prices.

A nice niche grocery store, clean and well-lit with great variety of gourmet ingredients and pre-prepared foods, Whole Foods has a better-than-averagee selection of multi-packs and of single-serving bottled beers for building mixed sixers for a reasonable $8.99. Nothing in the beer case is exceptionally rare, but what's there is in-date and nicley chilled for immediate enjoyment.

The service is professional and unobtrusive, the atmosphere friendly and casual. It's a nice stop on my periodic Sams'/Tyler's/Carolina Brewery run, and I'd shop there more frequently if I lived back on The Hill!

Everyone knows what Whole Foods is by now and if you dont go to their website. It seems the only difference between stores is the meat/fish department and the beer.

At this one theres an open face cooler filled with decent 6 packs. Plenty of the standard "organic" beers and even a few of the wheatless beers.

A good selection of the local brews you cant get up here in VA like Duck Rabbit and Highland. Also a good selection of the higher ABV brews now that NC can have them. Various Belgians and Sesonal 750ml bottles on 2 racks front and back. A little high on prices but on par with the stores mentality. A good place nonetheless to shop for beer in the area.

So I was in the chapel hill area, and whole foods ended up being the place I went shopping for beer (well at least what I brought back home).

Quality: As always whole foods provided not the biggest, but a rather good selection of beer. The set up was a medium sized cooler (the smallest beer cooler that I have seen in a whole foods) and two stands in which singles were sold at room temp(one for organic and enviro friendly beers and another for regular bombers)

Service: There was a wine tasting going on next to the beer cooler with what looked like one of the distributors and an employee. The employee was a wonderful help....he let me make a list and even went to the back of the store to see if he had any of the six and four packs I wanted that were not cold. Great customer service.

Selection: Not the best in that I saw in the Chapel hill Durham area, but definitely enough to get me by...lots of avery, rogue, duck-rabbit, highland, victory, great divide, lots of imports, ect. (I have to give it a 3.5 because I went there after I saw Sam's Blue Light)

Value: I ended up spending about $55 dollars and I got:
1 four pack of Ayinger Celebrator
1 four pack of North Coast Old Stock
1 six pack of a Major Tom's Pomegranate Wheat (I can't pass up an interesting wheat)
1 six pack of duck-rabbit wee heavy seasonal
1 bomber of highland tasgall
1 bomber of Three Philosophers by Ommegang.

Overall whole foods is usually a safe bet for a pretty good selection, and worth stopping in.

The store is a fancy/fresh food upscale grocer. It has an emphasis on gormet atmosphere. The store is clean and very busy. It has lots of high end things and beer is just one of the things it sells. The quality is good. They seem to have a lot of people shopping and probably a good turnover. The service for the beer was pretty nonexistent and then I almost got denied my purchase at the register because the clerk didn't believe it was me on my driver's licence. But fortunately it was straightened out. Selection was just a little bit better than average. They have a lot of different beers, but they just don't have the shelf space to have a huge selection. As far as prices go, in general they were pretty common to other stores I frequent, but a few of the beers were much more expensive than I am accustomed to paying (up to 30% more). My opinion of the store is that it is a great stopping ground if my favorite store does not have a particular beer...just give it a shot and see if they have it.

I was pretty impressed by their selection, i would say definately better than the whole foods in Raleigh. They have a Descent size cooler stock with six packs of a wide range of micro's from Rogue, Mendocino, Avery, Great Divide, Dogfish Head, Harpoon along with many others and imports. They also have a huge room temp shelf that some other reviewers may have missed. Its tucked away with the wine but they have a large shell filled with mostly single bottles and bombers of micros and many imports along with some six packs. Overall a very large selection with descent prices

Edit: With the new law in effect for only a couple of days, they already have a nice selection of >6% brews (saw all 3 chimay's, Duvel, Ommegang, and Hennepin) and they will soon carry the Rogue XS line and the rest of the victory line
