Brussels is the place for lambics and as such one must taste lambics here.

but ho hum, mort subite isn't the best series of spontaneous fermentation beers. i dunno, maybe it doesn't have this maturation aura the taste and smell of artisanal beers from, say, cantillon have.

Honestly, despite it being a very decent, cherry tasting fizzy beer, it has an industrial "pop" appearance to it. decent, not magnificent. in turn, i appreciate the elaboration of cantillon more nowadays.

37.5cl bottle purchased in Belgium.

A: Light red, slightly orangeish - almost completely transparent. Pours with a thin white head that dies down to a crown. Moderate carbonation continues to rise from the bottom of the glass.

S: Cherry, but with a lot of other fruits thrown in - plums, berries, even some watermelon. The wild yeast is also very tangible.

T: Kind of watery, but manages to mirror the nose pretty well. Cherry taste is pleasing but mild; I expected more of a kick than this, but that might also be because my last kriek was Cantillon. Not very funky, but a good flavor.

M: Nice and smooth, very refreshing. Moderate carbonation gives it a nice tart feeling on the tongue.

D: It's good, but the watery flavor makes this less appealing. I would drink a couple of these, but then the watery feel would be the deal breaker.

This was my second beer I had with dinner at Belgo Centraal in London. It came looking like a rose wine, but with lots of champagne like bubbles and a frothy 1/2" of pinkish white head. There was a large sour cherry nose with hints of mild toasted grain.

The taste was dominated by sweet and sour cherries, with a tingling effervescence much like champagne. A very drinkable beer and a great way to finish off a really good pot of mussels!

Pours a clear reddish color with faint pink highlights. It almost looks unnatural. The head is off-white and clings to the glass with patches of sticky lace. Sweetish cherry notes, some light tartness and some malt make up the nose. Tart jolly ranchers flavors reveal themselves on first sip. Some cherry flesh and pits flavor give this lambic a more depth than many sweetened lamibcs. Acidity builds towards the end of the glass but never competes with the sweetness. Funk is very subdued, as is a minerally, iron flavor. This might be subtle oak notes. The finish is off dry and fruity.

A decent lambic. More complexity than most mass market lambics, but not outrageously complex, acidic and funky like the traditional lambics I love.

Worth a try, pass lindemans and chapeau up for this stuff.

The beer has a good inch head and a pink colour to it. The head retention is very good.

The nose on the beer is with sweet cherries and a bit of tartness. This beer has a sweetness from the cherries and a slight tartness. Very balanced. The mouth feel is a bit creamy and the beer is pretty drinkable. Solid lambic all around.

375 ml corked bottle, purchased at the LCBO.

Pours a crystal clear cranberry juice red, big frothy light pink head forms, slowly settles down, leaving some lace foam on the glass, some decent retention, head stick around, solid layer, pretty rocky. Smell is very sweet, sugary, some cherry juice, wood, very earthy, some light funk and acidity. Taste is not too bad, very sweet cherry juice, oak, bread, kind of dry in the finish, light funkiness, woody, not as bad as I thought it would be. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation. Not exciting but an accessible Kriek for something wanting to check out the style. Not bad.

A: Red with a white head, some retention, good lacing.

S: Wonderful tart, cherry nose & sweet fruity esters.

T: Light tartness balances the fruity sweetness. Definitely cherries.

M: Light to moderate body is slightly acidic.

D: Very drinkable for the style.

LCBO in a moment of inspiration, albeit it gay inspiration. Pink froth with some fruity esthers. Medium bodied, though I am glad I shared this as drinkable, a little. Finishes sweet, that cherry sticky syrup, not too sweet, dtill retaining a sour edge.

A - Clear red/pink with a light pink foam.

S - Fruity like cherries (duh), with a touch of earthiness and honey.

T - Quite sweet, tart, and very cherry-like with a healthy dose of concord grape. There's some very mild hops in the finish.

M - Light and quite fizzy. Has a seltzer like quality.

D - Not bad. Nothing too complex, but a nice refreshing drink.

Besides the pink tinted head, consisting of fairly large bubbles, this looks like a soft-drink. A very pale red, like a raspberry ginger ale or something like that. Loads of carbonation. Spotty lacings.

Cherry (shocking, I know) on the nose. Sweet overall but that medicinal character that has been mentioned is certainly there, like a throat losange. Cream soda from the sugar.

Good hit of fizzy carbonation hides the first taste. Sweet cherries, not overly sour. A little bit of powdery yeast, but not funky or anything. Some of the corn comes through in the finish, although it isn't unpleasant and combines with that cream soda flavour.

When I first went to Brussels, I got completely lost. I ended up out in the industrial wasteland and wandered for hours. When i finally found the Grand Place, the Mort Subite Kriek was what the waiter recommended. This was my first Belgian beer (and first beer other than macro lagers) and it turned me onto the right path. I know now this isn't the best of its kind, but on that day it was the greatest thing I had ever tasted. I'm glad the LCBO picked it up.

Sorry but this following comment is in french :

Appearance : lambic à la robe rouge soutenue, belle mousse compacte tenant peu, effervesence importante
Smell : arômes assez coplexes (vanille, amande, cerise ...)
Taste and mouthfeel : douce et acidulée, présence de la cerise
Drinkability : une bière lambic correcte mais sans plus

The Mort Subite became my pioneer expedition into Belgian Lambic. I did not have high
expectations and true enough it was not really impressive. Coincidentally, this bottle is
Cherry flavour (Kriek) which is the same flavour as the Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle Kirsch
Bier which I tasted some time ago. The Mort Subite pours out with a generous head which
grows and sinks in quickly; I managed to do a nice pour on this one. This lambic smells
a little fruity, a little yeasty and also rather sour. The taste was about reflecting this
smell except maybe the fruitiness is stronger. I am not sure however if it was the yeast
or the malt that gives of a strange taste which felt a little medicinal and somehow spoilt
the experience. The fruitiness and subtle sweetness was not enough to save the day. I
think I prefer the German Nuezelle Kirsch to this Mort Subite Kriek. The Mort Subite is ok
and I can recognize the effort to make it more beery than the Nuezelle Kirsh which was closer
to the level of syrupy than any beers I have tried but I would probably save on ordering
this one. Nevertheless, I would probably still try other Lambics like the Lindermans,
Timmermans which are available in Singapore. The Cantillon is, unfortunately unavailable.
Other Lambics like the Floris and the De Troch Chapeau would be stuff I would probably just
pass on.

The beer arrived clear ruby with an almost pink, white head which lasted well to coat the glass.

The aroma was lightly tart with a sour bing cherry presence which was quite strong and in the forefront. Also present was a light bit of alcohol.

The flavor only had a lightly tart character with cherries and some wheat.

The finish was lightly tart with an indication of cherries into the aftertaste. The body was medium light with a moderate carbonation. The beer was ok, but nothing too special.

Draft in proper glass at Toone in Brussels on 9/16/06.

Pours sparkling deep cherry red with a pinkish head, very creamy head that laces well. Aroma of Vick's cough drops, Vick's cough drops, and more Vick's cough drops. Sweet cherry front, becoming tart in the middle and the finish. Mouthfeel was quite fizzy, a little too fizzy. This is not something I'd want a lot of, still, red beer is neat.

330ml bottle bought from Belgianshop.com

Poured a hazy pinky red colour... Creamy pink head poured quite thick and rocky then faded fairly quickly to almost nothing.. a fair amount of carbonation shoots to the surface. Quite a lot of sticky lacing...

Aroma - Quite strong sour cherry notes, strong nuttiness (almond and some pistachio), marzipan, earthy hints, slight biscuity maltiness, creamy vanilla, only the faintest hop notes, string sugary sweetness, some very very slight lambic brett notes...

Taste – Nice light tart cherries, definite almond / marzipan notes, creamy, light biscuity malts, light spicy hops, pretty sweet - although not as much as i expected... again some faint lambic earthiness..

Feel - Pretty sharp initially then smooth after... Light body.. pretty refreshing and drinkable although maybe too sweet for more than one in a sitting...

Overall - A pretty good kriek. Probably too sweet for a lot of people but certainly worth a try though...

Poured from a corked bottle I brought back to the US from Antwerp. Maybe it's available somewhere here, but I haven't seen it. It's appearance was OK, red colored beer with pink foam. It smelled like cherries but not as strong as Lindeman's kriek. Same with the taste. Not really worth any effort to find, but not bad if it's offered to you.

Mort Subite translates to Sudden or Instant Death. Yep, that pretty well describes this muddled mess. There seem to be too many ingredients. Very sweet but bland in the fruit department. Taste needs more cherries. Smell is pretty good though, fruity with a mixture of berries and medicinal sweet cherries. Thick frothy pink head looks good. Very pink, impressively pink.

the champagne of kriek beers, its deep red like bull´s blood, spontaneous fermentation, like wine, its smell presents wheat, cherry, malt, hops; taste ample harmonious, a little metalic; good for cheese, and german cuisine, drinkabilty over the average, because is like appetizer; try with goblet. 78% recommended.

Very thick, long lasting, foamy, tan head. Hasy brown body. Smell like cherry, a lot, combined with aromas that resemble red wine. Taste is like cherry again, very sweet at the begining, some tartness in the end that makes you feel you are drinking the fermented fruit. The tartness tends to lower down as the beer heats up to room temperature, makes the beer more enjoyable.

I feel like im drinking a pink wine with the smell of a red that looks like a beer.

Its the first lambic i taste, i dont know what to say, i think it fits the style properly, but it not my favorite beer style at all. Myabe is just that i miss the taste of malt from this beer (which i dont feel at all).

250ml bottle

Pours with a deep red body, pinky white head with good retention

Smell, strong sherbet coated cherries. Slight acidic tart twang but followed by a sugary sweetness

Taste, slight tart cherry flavour followed by an estery sweet finish. Some crisp bready malt in the background

A very drinkable kriek, not a big tart unsweetened lambic but a drinkable fruit beer this is

From a 375ml bottle, cork dated 2/04.

Pours a clear cherry/amber color with a light pink frothy head. Lots of fine lace. Smells of tart cherry with hints of light spice.

Tastes tart and lightly sweet, some sweet spice and not much else. Mouth is not sticky, not overly sweet, even a bit crisp. This beer is tasty, nothing wrong with it but nothing special.

Bottles bought in a department store in Monterrey, México, with a best before date of August 2006.

Pours a beautiful bubbling rosé champagne-like brew, with a nice pink to reddish head and good lacing.

Smell is of cherries and little maltiness.

Taste is refreshing, fizzy, of cherries. Good balance of malts and sweetness of the fruits.

Mouthfeel is crisp, sweetish though.

Of course I'll have another one. Actually, I am.

This kriek poured a slightly hazy cherry red with a forever lasting bright white head.

The cherries came through quite strong in the nose but never completely overpowered the sourness that lingers.

The taste, like the nose is dominated by the cherries. The sweet start is almost too much. But the finish combines the sweetness with a nice sour that lingers and lingers.

The mouthfeel is light and bubbly. Really nice.

This is a very drinkable lambic. Probably a little kool ade for a died in the wool lambic lover, but I really liked it.

Brought back this bottle from my trip to Amsterdam. Comsuned 7/28/04, date on bottle says 11/05.

This beer is absolutely beautiful. As it's pouring out of the bottle it's a light pink color, and acquires darker reddish-brown colors in the glass. A huge and gorgeous light-pink, creamy foamy sticks around the glass after a pour.

As for the scent, it's not as strong as I expected, and is best-described as cherry-musy. An old farmouse. Old cheese. And there's a wiff of cherry in there, too.

The taste is crisp and only slightly tast, and the surprisingly large head adds a creamy aspect aspect to the mouthfeel. The level of acidity makes there more of a lemon taste than a cherry taste, though some cherry notes are still there. Later, as the beer warms, the sweet cherry flavor lingers in the aftertaste. Mmm....

Dark burgundy red body with a fresh white hear of hazy spontaneous bubbles. Ample lacing. Smell is cherry preserves, like pie, powerful and true--yet not too sweet; very nice.

Taste, too, refreshes by not being too sweet. The focus arrives more on the mouthfeel, accented by a somewhat strong carbonation flush followed by a smooth, creamy characterature of the sweet and fruity cherry. Utterly clean finish.

Highly drinkable and an excellent kriek, one of the best I've had.
