After beer stops at the Fox & Goose, as well as the Stubbings Wharf in Hebden Bridge, a walk down the Canal towards Todmorden worked up a hunger, as well as a thirst. As we entered Todmorden from the Canalside, we walked towards the Railway Station, outside which is a small Roundabout where three main roads meet. Across from this Roundabout and the Railway Station, the Tenth Muse Café sits on a corner of a row of dark stone buildings.

A dark blue painted frontage with large windows, it looked like a Café from the outside, but there is no hint to the fact that it sells good beer. This made it an unlikely stop for a decent beer, but my friend Richard, an experienced walker in these parts, assured me that we could get a quality bite to eat accompanied by a decent beer, in double quick time here, something that is difficult in even the best of UK Pubs at times. I have to admit to being a little skeptical at first, but I needn’t have been.

Basically, this is an up market Café that concentrates on quality food and has a very European feel. Two rooms are served by the mid-placed wooden clad serving area, which is at the top of a handful of stairs, with a room below, and a room up the stairs at the back that also has Internet Access. The Menu concentrates on Mediterranean dishes, though you can get a Full English Breakfast if you want. Hot & Cold Sandwiches and a host of Salads complement the specialist dishes. Caters well for Vegans & Vegetarians. Local Artwork is always on display adding to its Cosmopolitan feel.

In addition to excellent food, it has a full license and stocks a solid, varied range of Bottled Beers & Wines. There is only one draft beer, Lindeboom, quite rare for this area. The bottled beer range is very interesting. I started with an Erdinger Weiss Beer, but it also stocks Czechvar from Czech Republic, the full range of Chimays from Belgium, plus some Timmermans fruit beers, Tusker from Kenya, Crus Campo from Spain, Methos from Greece, Nastro Azzuro from Italy, Guiness Export (the 8% version) and an Organic Cider. Quite a range for such a small Café.

A surprise for me, and a damn good place to pick up a hearty Sandwich & a quality beer before we popped over the road to the Railway Station to catch the train home. Very enjoyable, the prices were reasonable and the service was excellent.

Last Visit: 4th April 2002.
