At the first sip it is smooth and full-bodied, at the second sip the true rich, strong roasted malt aroma of Einbecker Ur-Bock unfolds. The dark barley-malt brewed refreshment from the Einbecker original recipe.

Pours amber/dark brown color with medium head. Aroma is sweet malts with a hint of floral. Taste is citrus hops on the front end balanced by a nice bready malt sweetness that lasts into a strong aftertaste. The beer is light- to medium-bodied with a pleasant, fine texture. Very good beer from a classic brewery.

A bock thats woody and earthy in European style. This taste is not for me....sipping this over and over brought ME no joy, just had me looking for my next beer.

Wow, I've passed this by so many times as the rating is misleadingly lackluster. So glad I pulled the trigger today. Rainy Fall weather perfect to enjoy a few of these surprisingly exceptional beers of a style I don't often encounter.

Pours a tight two finger head. Scents of Hallertau hops on the nose with Munich malts. Is a mahogany color to almost light brown. The beer laces down the glass. This one is pretty good and I haven’t had an Einbecker for about 13 years. Very strong. The taste is a bit more like a dark Maibock than a Dunkel. Hops are nice and spicy. A bit medicinal.
It does have a hint of chocolate on the back drop giving it the Dunkel name. Mouthfeel is medium bodied. It is smooth and dry like a good Maibock.
Man, I wish this weren’t so expensive or it’d be a staple in my fridge. At $15 a sixer, I’ll only be able to buy this maybe twice a year. I love Einbecker’s Maibock but this is even better.

From the bottle, it pours a slightly reddish mahogany with a nice off-white head that slowly diminishes and leaves lacing.
The nose gets some roasted malts with possibly a little chocolate. The mouth gets a nice light caramel and roasted malts. Feel is medium to medium heavy.

(0.33l bottle, L4081109 L; purchased single off shelf at Shangy's yesterday... poured into a 14 oz mug, but I wish I had a bock glass, dang!)

L: brilliantly-clear, tawny-burnt sienna-colored liquid; perfectly pert, bouncy eggshell foam... keeps a gradient collar; decent slash of lace at the top

S: heaven!; its aromas leapt forth as it was pouring... herbal, almost cola-like top note, with underlying alpine evergreen and molasses-y caramel... sublime

T: again, it's like molasses, buckwheat honey, brown bready malt, and a superbly-measured, piney, vaguely thyme/menthol-like bitterness, just cutting through like a chainsaw... stopping me dead in my tracks, oh baby! - voluptious malts and arresting bitterness?! YES!... it's almost like an tonic, petite barleywine

F: slow, sultry malt nectar, luxurious legs, almost cordial-like in its roundness... as luscious as it is up front, and with its biting, relatively-boozy aft, I do wish it wasn't quite as viscous, but then again

O: what the Hölle?! how have I never had(?) or reviewed this?!?... I seriously want to get back in my car and go get some more... can't wait to try the bock that tops this (1963)

Bottle Best By: ?? (L4081109)
Glassware: Pokal
Temp at Pour: 58.5 F / 14.7 C

Look:
Nice copper color with a 1.5" off white head. The head slowly dissipates to about a 1/8" consistent cover, even after a sip has been taken

Smell:
Very malty and bready with some notes of toast. There is also a grassy element. Reminds me of an amped-up Marzen.

Taste:
Follows the nose. Toasted bread and toasted toffee. The grassy notes become a nice hop note that balances out the malt, dries things out quite a bit and leaves a dry bite on the aftertaste almost similar to a German pilsner. The bite grows as more of the beer is consumed.

Feel:
Smooth but with that aforementioned dryness at the end. Body is medium with a lean to towards the heavy side.

Overall:
An interesting beer. It actually reminds me of some American made Maibocks that I have had - an amped-up Oktoberfest (Marzen or Festbier) with extra hops to provide balance and some bite. There is a real dipole of flavor (malts and hops) but overall it is rather uncomplicated and easy to drink. I like it.

330ml bottle into a tall glass. Coding no help in determining freshness.

Looks okay in the glass. Copper colored body with a small white head which shrinks to a ring leaving spotted lacing.

Not much on the nose. Sweet malt and a little musty.

On tasting, it's certainly sweet, smooth, and malty.

Mouth just about medium. Finish is very interesting. After the sweet malt has washed away, there is a lingering dry bitterness left on the tongue.

Overall, quite enjoyable. The see-saw sweet bitter element pleased this particular palate.

nice dark bock here, frothy headed from the tap, slightly hazy amber color to it, low red glow, looks great in its proper mug! the aroma here is lightly fruity, dried berries and red apples come to mind, there is some faint astringency to the yeast, and a nice earthy malt richness, not overly sweet, and packed with minerals, very fall aroma on this one. the flavor is similar, equal parts grain and yeast driven, i get some real umami character to this, almost soy-like for a moment, fallen leaves, acorns, light almond, and some toffee sweetness in the grain. the yeast is bready to me, slightly doughy, really old worldy, not perfectly fresh overall though, a little oxidation in the mix that actually kind of works in here, its classically german overall, one of their better beers that ive had. great carbonation, lively the whole drink, medium body and softer feeling, with a lathery creamy head that stays. it gets a little sweeter as it sits, but there is a lot of depth to the malt as well, and it opens up nicely. overall an enjoyable and rather distinctive bock, awesome to be able to drink this on tap!

Orangey brown pour with a khaki head. Caramel malt, toast, hint of booze, and light earth in the nose. Taste follows suit but add a dimension of sweet dark fruit nectar near the finish. Malt driven in the feel too, very smooth, medium bodied but does weigh nicely on the palate cumulatively. All around good bock, but simpler

L: Darker amber, mostly clear, plenty of activity.

S: Roasted caramelized barley.

T: It's quite lovely. It's similiar to Einbeck's Mai-Ur-Bock except for the extra roasting process.

F: Smooth and stronger than usual.

O: Right proper brew. High quality. Ur-Bock Dunkel translates to "Traditional Bock Dark" The darker color has nothing to do with extra ingredients, rather it's how the barley was brewed. To avoid repeating myself, I talk Bock in an earlier review: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/66/202/?ba=DrBeergood#review

Indeterminate age with a bottle code L4311380 K 12:24

Amber, clear, and moderately carbonated. 1½ inch thick off-white head with good retention and sparse lacing.

Gratefully, there is no skunkiness in the aroma, despite the green bottle. The aroma is moderately strong, with a caramel sweetness, toast, and raisins.

The taste is relatively complex initially. There is the caramel and raisins from the aroma along with a delightful toasted bread maltiness. Malty and smooth in the beginning. A slight bitterness begins in the middle and carries through to the finish. The aftertaste is a very nice intermingling of the dark fruit and sweetish toasted bread. The finish is malty, but not too sweet.

The mouth feel is moderate toward the thin side.

Overall, a very good bock with an inviting aroma and complex toasty flavor that lingers.

Clear brown/amber with a tall, fluffy khaki head that slowly dissolves into a thick film. Very nicely balanced with the molasses, caramel, dates offset by some peppery spice and drying hops. No coating in your mouth and no sticky aftertaste. This is an easy drinking delicious dunkel bock.
