330ml bottle...pours a clear gold color with a 2 finger white cap that reduces to a surface lace...aromas of cooked cereals and wet hay with some light earthy yeast funk...flavor is malty up front then goes to a balanced discernment on the palate with spicy hopping and earthy tones...clean hoppy finish with sweetness riding just in the background...rounded balanced character ...very satisfying and warming

330ml green bottle from the LCBO. Cost was $2.70 CDN. Haven't seen this brewery in LCBO stores before and had a good experience in a taster's pack so why not? Best before March 26, 2021. Served cool into a pint glass.

Appearance - Clear pale golden color with three plus fingers of white head that recedes to a half finger in short order. Great clarity, lots of visible carbonation, some spotty lacing.

Smell - Clean and grainy, slightly minerally. A tiny bit of underlying sweetness on the nose like creamed corn. Not a big nose. Possibly a touch skunked but not too bad.

Taste - A bit harsh and boozy, more bitter than expected, grainy and grass throughout. Some underlying sweetness blended in after the bitterness and booze subsides.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, light carbonation a touch sticky initially with dry boozy finish.

Overall - Not super impressed, will try next time with a colder brew as this one is cool, but not quite ice-cold which maybe it should be. Still worth a try and nice to see a new entry in the Maibock market. Will come back and comment again with the colder brew - there may be changes coming.

Edit - Reviewed the second bottle a colder sample, taste was a touch less harsh and boozy but not real big differences. Certain not a bad Maibock, but not one I'd routinely return to.

330 mL squat green bottle from the LCBO - a surprising but welcome sight, as we don't see many new German beers around here these days (doubly so in the case of bocks). Best before Mar 26 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours crystal clear and bright golden yellow, with one finger of soapy, frothy white head situated atop. It seeps off within the next five minutes or so, leaving behind a tight collar encircling a few patches of bubbly film; not much lace deposition. Looks like a typical German pale lager. The skunkiness is impossible to miss, but beyond that I'm getting grassy, floral hops, grainy pale malts and a bready, slightly biscuity note with just a hint of honeyed sweetness.

The flavour profile doesn't deviate very far from that outline - I'm tasting grainy pale malts, as well as some biscuity, bready sweetness with a bit of honey. There's also a fair bit of grassy, weedy, herbal hops mixed in there, which become more noticeable by mid-sip; it finishes bready-sweet, and mildly boozy, with a pointed herbal, floral noble hop bitterness persisting well into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that briskly prickles the palate; feels smooth on the tongue, with decent drinkability given its strength.

Final Grade: 3.8, a B+. Bocks come in many different stripes, but if I had to pick a "least favourite" within the category, it would most likely be the helles bock - my blunt reasoning being that they usually come off as glorified strong Euro pale lagers, at least IMHO. Einbecker's Ur-Bock Hell is not necessarily an exception to that rule of thumb, though I will say that it's one of the better helles bocks I've had (in spite of its innate skunkiness). In particular, its robust noble hop showing provides the brew with some much-needed depth of character, with the end result being a mostly satisfying strong lager. I'd drink this again if I were in the mood, and would definitely recommend it to German-style lager enthusiasts - it's a reasonably worthwhile pick for my 2250th review.

Draft served in a fluted stange glass at The Beer Temple.

Saturated orange and straw gold color, bright and lively. Dense layer of meringue foam, plenty of lacing.
Fresh baked bread, doughy with some lightly grassy noble hops and a mild grainy sweetness.
Similar taste, smooth toasted grains, fresh doughy bread, light grass and lemony hop note in the back.
Full and smooth with a pleasant roundness to it. Body is medium-sized with soft but persistent carbonation.
An easy drinker that doesn't reinvent the wheel. Definitely less sweet than Mai-Ur-Bock, and not at all skunky on draft.
Prost!

L: Pours a clear golden color. Very small top off head that disolves rapidly.

A: bread,grass,grains,caramel,herbs and honey

T: Taste start off sweet and grassy with bready notes Inn the back, then it finishes off with a strong hoppy bitterness that stays there a long time inn the aftertaste. Way to unbalanced inn the flavours for my apreciation. The bitterness get way to much.

M: medium carbonation and body.crisp and clean feel.

O: A interesting beerstyle to try. The beer is decent and drinkable, but i was not that impressed with the flavours inn this beer. When that is said I would like try more hellesbock so I could get to know the style a little more.
