A traditional version of the style. Nice hoppy textures with a little malt. Not sweet at all. Very nice.

Good if you can find it fresh, which I haven't been able to since 2012

Been drinking this for years. Very consistent batches, also tastes well either bottle or can. Balanced IPA that has the bitterness and fruit. Hops are Centennial and Chinook, as per label. I don't get huge pine or dank from it like some west coast styles, or the kinds of esters from some English style IPA. Mad Tom is its own thing (there is also a double Mad Tom), very delicious and in my opinion one of the very finest out of Ontario, or Canada for that matter.

Nice head with excellent lacing, citrus nose, firm body with strong resinous finish. Great example of style.

11.5 oz bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

Unfiltered is listed on the label, and so it is; hazy blood-orange color capped in a finger's worth of linen white quick fade froth. Nice film and plenty of lacing, though.

Caramelized malt with some citrus hop aromas. Potted flowers. Some raw alcohol.

The taste is more citrus hop than the aroma indicates. Still malty... and salty.

Sturdy body and surprisingly dry. Hoppy enough and the alcohol is tempered despite the smell.

Not bad but I was looking for more refreshment.

Muskoka Brewery "Mad Tom IPA"
11.5 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "ENJOY BEFORE MAR 23 2017" and sampled on 17 JAN 2017
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Muskoka's Mad Tom initially pours a fingerprint-clear amber body despite the fact that the label reads "unfiltered". A secondary pour adds a little bit of haze but I'd still call it clear.

The aroma is nicely blended: softly piney, floral, and gently citrusy and grassy over a lightly caramelish malt base.

Across the palate it's medium to medium-light in body and crisp with a standard carbonation level.

The malt appears more caramelish in the flavor though, and fuller as is usually the case. The hops remain as they are in the aroma, although perhaps a slight touch more leafy and citrusy. It's solidly bitter, and bone dry in the finish with residual resin, and some pine, orange, and leaves. The alcohol makes its presence known but never really steps forward, although at just 6.4% ABV you wouldn't really expect it to. If there was any less, on the other hand, you wouldn't necessarily immediately sense its strength and see it as an IPA.

In the end it's a solid, bitter and hoppy IPA that displays a nice blend of American hops.

I bought a sample pack whilst in Hamilton for my son's hockey tournament. The scent had hints of bitter hops. The taste is nicely balanced and easy to drink. There was some bitter hop with touch of pine. The Mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a solid beer.

This barely peeks over 3.7 for me.

A - Pours with a finger of limp white foam that has weak retention and only a bit of lace. Hazed golden body with lots of visible bubble streams.

S - EIPA for sure. Smells of citrus, pine, grass, toasted grain. That sea-oak-barrel scent with scant grapefruit peel.

T - Taste is definitely better, with candied orange zest, sugary notes among some dankness. Bitterness in the aftertaste is on time and balanced. Liked an EIPA, bready malt dominates.

M - Very resinous, with a dry finish. Gets better as it warms. Tingly.

D - It's an English IPA and it grows on you.

This is a nice Ontario brewed IPA which displays some of the characteristics of some of the great American IPAs. I've recently had Heady Topper, Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA & others and had a good taste of some of the best IPAs in the world. This beer isn't as good, but it competes well with some of the best in Ontario (Headstock, Hop City HopBot etc). It's got the standard hoppy citrus/floral/tangerine/pine flavours & aromas with a decent bready malt balance but falls a bit short of the finest IPAs in its complexity & fullness of mouthfeel. I would enjoy it again as a good beer when I'm out at a place with limited choices. I may even consider it a little higher were it not for the fact that its "big brother" Twice as Mad Tom DIPA is just enough better that I would put it in the conversation with the world class beers listed above.

A-Golden yellow with a hint of orange, white thin head
S-Subtle pine and dank aroma, with a fruity herbal undertone
M-Mouthfeel is watery and lacklustre with carbonation not aiding the situation being a little peppery and sharp upfront and then not playing well with the bitterness
T-Only slightly sweet upfront and then a big hit of heavy bitterness that seems uncomplicated and under valued
O-This beer is not well balanced, there isn't a pleasant balance between sweet and bitter and the aftertaste is a little harsh
