Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
While the legend of Mad Tom is laden with mystery and intrigue, one thing remains clear - Mad Tom did things his own way. Twice as Mad Tom is an aggressively twice dry-hopped Imperial India Pale Ale, that delivers a definitive hop aroma and unabashedly big bold flavor. We brew this beer with the road less traveled in mind, and in the spirit of old Mad Tom, we make no bones about it.

Pours straw yellow with a thinnish head but good lacing. Aroma lightish - piney / citrusy... Flavour has some lemon sweetness slight graininess but is mostly overwhelmed by the hop bitterness and floral hops. The body is light for its strength and flavour with miderate carbination.

Strong imperial IPA. Good taste, less citrus but still sweet. Not bitter at all.

Serving Type: 473 mL Can

L- Pours a Slight Copper yellow topped by a towering white pillowy head. Thick lacing. Fantastic retention.

S- A fairly faint aroma, but I can gather a Pine and citrus hoppiness. Slight malty sweetness.

T- Very much the same as the aroma with the Pine being more prevalent. A nice, solid citrus bitterness on the finish. Well balanced flavours.

F- Full body and low-moderate carbonation. Was definitely expecting more carbonation but it works pretty well here.

O- Overall, Twice as Mad Tom is a pretty enjoyable Imperial IPA. It has a lot of strong hop flavours to offer without being too bitter or overbearing.

Muskoka Brewery "Twice As Mad Tom Double IPA"
11.5 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "ENJOY BEFORE MAR 22 2017" and sampled on 17 JAN 2017
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

I was expecting Muskoka's Twice As Mad Tom Double IPA to be just that, a doubled up version of Mad Tom IPA, but in looking at them side by side they're different in color. Mad Tom is a little darker and more amber while Twice As Mad Tom is more of a deep gold. You can even see the color difference coming through in the heads. With that said I'll just repeat what I said about the original Mad Tom, and state that Twice As Mad Tom initially pours a fingerprint-clear deep gold body despite the fact that the label reads "unfiltered". A secondary pour adds a little bit of haze but I'd still call it clear. Nice head retention and lacing. Moving forward...

The aroma is sweetish with golden malt and softly piney and citrusy hops. Alcohol is noted, waiting in the wings for its cue to step forward in the flavor. Overall it's not a bold aroma, but that's alright, there are plenty of double IPAs that are more about strength and body than they are about doubling the hops.

The flavor opens it up, bringing more citrus and tropical flavors including tangerine and pineapple, but also more grainy malt as well. The pine remains, but it seems lighter than expected; and alcohol is present, but no more so than is actually required for a double IPA - without it something would be missing, and it might seem too malty. It may even be adding a bit of a coconut note. It's bitter, solidly bitter, but not overdone as there's malt to be balanced, yet it finishes dry as the residual notes of malt fade amidst the soft citrus and tropical fruit notes.

Full bodied in the mouth (or at least medium-full), the malt is clear, and the carbonation comes through as softly bristling before warming to become smooth and creamy.

Conclusion: Nicely balanced between sweetish grainy malts, piney/citrusy/grassy hops, alcohol, and bitterness. Satisfying and easy to drink in a relaxed way (not necessarily a sipper). Nicely done, well-balanced, rounded, and polished. Worth trying.

L: Lightly golden with a large foamy head on a hard pour which fades at a medium pace. Lacing remains.
S: Nice citrusy hops.
T: Lots of hops with a very nice blend of citrus with some pine, grassy, mango/melon/plum and a smooth finish without harsh bitterness.
F: Quite full & smooth.
Overall: Perhaps the best Canadian IPA I've had. I like it alongside Fat Tug although the taste is somewhat different with more citrus & a little less mango. I just had one right after my finishing my last:( Heady Topper and it compared nicely. I will likely be enjoying this fine DIPA often!

-spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Orange coloring, medium heavy haze. Chalky white head is two fingers and holds well. Strong show of carbonation, good coverage of lace with spongey daps on the vessel.

S: Sweet resiny pine hops and sugars first on the aroma. Grapefruit, sweet green leaves, sweet tang of tangerines alcohol, grapefruit sugars with a nice tone.

T: Flavor had a big burst of sugary pine and grapefruit hops. Tart and tangy citrus, pale malts. Sugary alcohol, tangerine notes, tangy tropical.

M: Medium-light body, tangy citrus hops glow on the hold, good amount of carbonation, milky texture.

O: Respectable in hop levels, a bit sweet and sugary alcohol mixes with tart and tangy tropical and citrus notes. Decent drinkability for 8.4%. When warms the alcohol becomes more prevalent.

Light gold to light copper in color with a light haziness. There's a fingernail of brilliant white on top. Light lacing. The aroma is of pungent grapefruit and orange. I taste a very tart orange, grapefruit, and overripe pineapple hop profile. Light malt appears at the back of the palate. The mouth is dry, lightly sticky and chewy.
