Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
While the legend of Mad Tom is laden with mystery and intrigue, one thing remains clear - Mad Tom did things his own way. Twice as Mad Tom is an aggressively twice dry-hopped Imperial India Pale Ale, that delivers a definitive hop aroma and unabashedly big bold flavor. We brew this beer with the road less traveled in mind, and in the spirit of old Mad Tom, we make no bones about it.

A: Copper, hazy, little carbonation of a few small bubbles rising evenly throughout the brew, a finger of off white head. Good lacing.

S: Caramel, malt, orange candy, caramelized onions. All very subdued compared to some, present and strong but not knocking me out.

T: Caramel, orange candy, caramelized onions, big bitterness, balancing sweetness, much more pronounced in the taste than the smell.

M: Thick and bready, syrupy, and resinous all in balance, but it finishes smooth and dry.

O: Excellent double IPA. Its overall a great brew on all accounts, and one that I could drink repeatedly. Drank on by 41st birthday, May 15th, 2014.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip pint glass, no obvious bottle dating.

Slightly hazy orange amber body, but there's a nice cherry hint towards the top. Thick and very symmetrical bleach white creamed head that forms three fingers with clumpy lacing and great retention. Solid looker.

Interesting nose, not a huge hop blast but a good mix of thick alcohol and caramel sweetness and citrus rushing hops. Chewy and leafy citrus orange and tangerines thickness abounds.

Palate has a noticeable sweetness and heavy alcohol thickness with good tolerable hop bitterness. Slightly leafy green and minty mouthwash coating, and toothpaste breath finish. Large thick malt caramel and sweetness with some syrupy orange qualities. Thick alcohol sugars but not horrifically sweet actually, and quite a good sense of buried boozy qualities.

Interesting take, but the mix is sort of fighting just a little with each other between hop and malt, and it's also noticeable on sugar first. Very easy drinking though and pleasurable.

Poured into a pint glass, perfect amount of head. Immediately smelled of pineapple juice, tasted quite sweet and like a hoppy version of pineapple. Very palatable, not off-putting at all. Very drinkable, lots of hops, nice colour, minimal lacing. Nice IPA for the cottage.

Back into IPA/DIPA territory for this review, another Canadian craft brew and another take on a hoppy high ABV brew to combat the bogshite sub-zero temperatures here in Cowtown right now. Twice as Mad Tom is a light orange brew (light for a DIPA?) with ample white head. Aroma is rich and malty with some tropical and citrus hop notes, but the malt stands out. Taste includes some unique elements for a DIPA ... There's some red grapefruit and orange hop flavors that combine with a considerable sweetness to produce an effect like orange breakfast drink crystals, along with some gooseberry, guava, and pine, although the latter is not harshly bitter and medicinal. The aforementioned sweetness is compelling: There are flavors like marshmallow or cotton candy, caramel corn, a hint of strawberry. A roasted (almost smoky) vibe like strong coffee emerges in the finish. Interesting. I am thinking of those molasses kiss candies in your Halloween bag, the ones in the orange and yellow wrapper than you couldn't pay people to take off your hands. I liked them for some reason. Like many DIPAS, the hop punch does add up and the lips do get a bit numb (which is probably the sneaky ABV as well), but overall I was impressed by the smooth and almost subtle approach to bitterness in such a big beer.
