The beer pours as a dark brown with red highlights. The scant head dissipates quickly. The deep flavor is mainly roasty with only slight sweetness. There is a slight cheery sweetness upfront (but this disappeared as the beer warmed). The aftertaste is astringent. The body and carbonation are appropriate for the style. Overall, this is on ok/pretty good beer. The astringency is a slight negative.

A fairly decent porter. Nothing to blow you away, but nothing to make you want a refund, either. On an assorted porter night, this one usually gets the 4th or 5th spot. Available at Trader Joe's (at least in Charlotte).

This porter pours a black color with a very slight red tint and a fairly small frothy tan head. The smell is of roasted grains, espresso, and chocolate, some standard porter scents. The taste is actually less complex though with the roasted grains really taking over and only very subtle espresso and chocolate flavors. The taste is very grainy and a bit earthy as well. The body is heavy as a porter should be. It has a pretty crisp mouthfeel. There aren’t any flavors here that are off and the body is sufficiently heavy. The bad news though is that this is a very one-note porter and not a particularly exciting note either.

I disagree with this average score of 76.
This is a pleasant porter, true to the English style and even refreshes after exercise (which for me, is a new use of porters.)
I will agree it Looks and Smells undistinguished. But Taste is solid, roasted malts let the hops come to play. Feel? I rarely give a 4 to a somewhat slight beer; but the carbonation and proper use of hops is a subtle sensation.
While I give myself a 50-50 chance of having this again, that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it its first try.

And something must be said of the value. I paid $1.09 for this at Trader Joe's. (Obviously there is a contract between the two for production and distribution.) But this is a great deal. Hence, the high Overall rating.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Minimal head creation, barely a finger tall of tan color that does manage to dissolve to a nice top. Thick collar, no lacing, quite almost white in color resting on a fairly clear if very dark walnut brown body.

Very closed nose. Aroma is almost flour and parched dryness, no sense of sweetness, malt, roast, char, anything really. Smells quite clean, maybe even a bit wet and watery. Nothing offensive or offputting though either.

Palate plays it pretty basic and safe. Mid palate has simple porter body if a tiny bit watery. Strangely though its extremely neutral in the middle with virtually nothing going on. Aftertaste and finish seems to be where all the flavor is. Large amounts of bitter char, and a bit of astringency on the bitterness side. Finishes clean with a roast that is very accented by bitterness. Slightly ashen as well.

A pretty neutral tasting porter, but has quite a bit of bitterness to it, but at least doesn't come off as undrinkable.
