Amber with a thin white head. Malt and hops come through in the aroma, mostly citrus and grass. Moderate carbonation and light body with a pleasant malty smoothness. Some caramel sweetness underneath an earthy hop bitterness. Finish is slightly bitter, but still quite clean. Lighter than I would expect for an IPA, but not a bad pale ale.

Pours into my nonic pint glass crystal clear. Nutty, leathery brown in color. Head is dense, off white and reasonably lasting.

On the nose, aromas are muted but present. I get aromas of nuts with hints of earth and leather. Aroma leads simply into the peppercorn aroma of English hops. The aromas are pleasant enough but they don't exactly leap forth from the glass, IMHO.

Taking my first sip, Wells IPA starts out with a smooth, slick mouthfeel. That moves quickly into the harsh, rockiness of an overly spritzy carbonation. Over aggressive carbonation detracts immediately from the beer's overall mouthfeel.

Flavors follow the nose. Smooth, malt nuttiness up front. Leather comes through in the center but nothing else to help round things out here. The finish is assertively bitter. Again, the peppercorn bite of English hops. Unfortunately, without any real roundness in the center the hops just add to that overcarbonated texture, giving the beer a harshness that otherwise might not be there.

Overall, Wells IPA isn't the best experience I've had with a British brewer. It was overall just too harsh with the carbonation clashing with the bitterness. Gonna give this a pass next time.

Disappointing as an IPA. If they called this English-style Amber or the like, I would be happy with it. It's a good beer, maybe a tad on the sweet side. At it's price it's worth picking up. If you're a hop head you'll be disappointed.

My absolute favourite beer right now.
Excellent balance between taste, smell and look.

Clear copper with a moderate head. Strong English hop nose. Crisp medium malt body with only mild hoppiness. Only 5% and relatively lightly hopped so not sure about the IPA label. But a very nice English Pale Ale which is where I'm placing it.

Not the greatest of beers by any sense. This one pours a copper gold with a bit of head that breaks fast. The smell is all malts, not much else there. The taste is malty and minerals. No hops to be found. Feel is thin and medium carbonation.

This looks like a bitter, tastes and smells like a macro lite beer. Not sure those are good things.

Can from LCBO Pours deep copper with a 1cm parchment coloured head with moderate lacing. The aroma is biscuity, malty with light grassy hops. Flavour: moderately bitter over biscuity, bready malts. Slightly earthy. Good finish.

Wells IPA.
500ml can. 5% alc.
Brewed in Bedford, UK.

The beer has a creamy beige head that lasts for quite a while. There is also nice glass lacing. The colour is copper, there are lots of ascending bubbles, and the beer is very clear.

The smell is bready, biscuity, and malty, plus some mild hoppiness. It's all quite subtle.

The taste is brown bread, biscuit, some malt, and hops. The taste notes are quite light.

The beer is light bodied. The finish dry with a hint of bitterness.

Overall, I liked this beer but I was underwhelmed by the flavour. It's a good beer but not a great beer.

From a 500ml can served at 12 degrees Celsius into a stemmed IPA glass.

Look: The beer pours a brilliant deep amber – very nice colour – with 4cm of rocky, puffy, tan head that settles into a partial film after three minutes. Good lacing.

Smell: Moderate earthy and floral hops with equal strength pale malts – I suppose that makes it well-balanced. Relatively uninteresting. A slight sulphury note when the head is present.

Taste: Medium intensity and bitter. Toasted malts. Slight unpleasant adjunct character. The finish is an all-around medium and bitter.

Feel: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth with no apparent alcohol.

Overall: I haven't had a chance to try many English IPA's so I'm giving the style ample space. As a beer Wells IPA is not bad, but just about mediocre. It looks good but fails to deliver elsewhere and becomes less attractive as it warms. I don't recommend this to anyone but I'm looking forward to my next English IPA.

500ml can poured into a mug.

L:
The liquid is transparent dark copper color with one finger of short live off-white head that dissipates to some foamy patch on the surface. There is not much lace left to see.

S:
Mainly grassy and herbal hop along with cooked veggies, a bit of malt and citric note.

T:
Malt as a backbone with a sweet touch, hop reveals to dominate with a citrus and grassy grain notes then finish with lingering moderate bitterness.

F:
Light body, crisp with high carbonation, not much smooth, dry finish.

O:
It goes down well easy and easy drinkable. However, even the name stated IPA. Characteristic side, I think it is not even close to IPA.
