Presentation: Top Marks to the chaps at Youngs & Co. yet again. What a marvelously crafted, high quality heavyweight brown glass bottle this offering arrives in. Listed on the US label as 1pt 0.9fl.oz, it started life as a half-litre bottle. The classic label has the majestic looks you come to expect from Youngs. A relatively tall, thin necked bottle, embossed with the Brewerys Logo. In fact, this beer is named after the Dorset Horn Ram that actually lives in the Brewerys Stables and is often paraded in some of Londons festivities.
Appearance: The classic English Bitter look; light brown with some copper hints and an orangey hue when back-lit. The off-white head, large and expansive when first poured, has a tobacco yellow tinge at times when viewed at an angle. The head slowly fades, but a thin collar always remains. Laces well, excellent conditioning in the beer.
Nose: Grainy malts rolled into a fruity nasal front end. Some hops and berry like odors at the back end with a hint of freshly rubbed hops.
Taste: Starts with a smooth malt beginning, some toasty traits. These rise to a somewhat fruity middle with hops mingling in with a light toffee caramel ending. The shift of flavors sometimes moves, but the beer is always well-balanced and definitely full of flavor.
Mouthfeel: Solid, malts and hops form the teasing edges of a smooth, velvety Pale Ale that has some grain texture vivaciously supported by a well conditioned beer. Balanced flavors and a meaty body lend a solid feel to this beer.
Drinkability: Sip it, or gulp it, and you can do either this beer slips down so easily and is the perfect throat charmer. Lovely Jubbly. Immensely Quaffable.
Overall: It was straight 4s, but the Drinkability was just too good - Bloody Hell ! - was I glad I picked up two bottles of this. What a marvelous beer. Established in 1831, the good news is that nearly 173 years later, they are still totally focused on knocking out the quality stuff. Highly Recommended.
Note: The reverse label on the US bottles interestingly states that the beer is warm conditioned over East Kent Goldings, whilst the UK ones states that Golding Hops are added during Cold Storage Go Figure!!!!
Also: This is listed as an Extra Special/Strong Bitter (ESB), which is not incorrect, but, maybe slightly misleading & may lead one to think of Fullers ESB. Ram Rod is actually more of a Pale Ale / Strong Bitter rather than an ESB.

275 ml bottle, unfortunately served far too cold at The Marquess of Anglesey, London. Amber colour, moderate head. Sweet alcoholic (despite ABV only 5%) candylike aroma. Flavour is a bit sweet with hints of nuts and cherries. Not my favourite this one.

The only problem with this beer is getting hold of it.
The only place I could see to buy it was direct from Marston's.
A lovely beer especially mixed with Young's London Special.

Another copper pour, white head 3/4" deep. Cool ruby edge to it. Nose was mildly fruity, earthy malt and hops.
A light sweetness, a good amount of noble hop flavor contributions. Highly carbonated, appropriate. Caramel and wood malt flavors, tea.
Neither super strong nor bitter, this one doesn't need to be compared to its claims on the label, its decent, but the format and price per oz keep it from being a repeat purchase.
