16.9 oz. (500 ml) can poured into pilsener

L: dark brown red topped by tidy 1-inch head of beige foam; no major sticking or lacing; the color and clarity are stunning ... it's very dark but still shows a reddish tone inside the darker brown

S: toasted peach kolache with a hint of maple icing; light notes of brown sugar, molasses; dates, prunes; dusty yeast

T: roasted sweet coffee beans; woody aftertaste, earthy but not overly bitter and with a slight bit of sweetness hinting at molasses or brown sugar

F: light-middleweight with a crispy-soft mix as it goes down; the carbonation tickles but only a little while the soft center sort of spreads throughout ... at times it's like chewing through a candy with a thin crispy layer surrounding a softer goey center; carbonation tickles and tingles the tip of your tongue long after the swallow; very cool, for it looks super carbonated but somehow doesn't have that grating super-carbonated effect

O: in need of a schwarzbier fix, I found this one nicely fitting that bill; it's not overboard in any direction with just enough earthy/woody flavor mixing with a little sweetness to come off like a legit schwarz; my can is about nine months old since the born-on date and still in fantastic shape; I won't hesitate to buy more of this one when in the mood for a little roasted malt

Poured from a 16.9oz can into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep brown color with a short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains some roasted malts, lager yeast, some chocolate and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of lager yeast and roasted malts. Then some mildly sweet flavors of chocolate, coffee and caramel come in. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, while there are better choices available in the style, this is still a solid beer to drink for a while.

500 ml can:

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. An off-white head slowly descends to a lasting thin cover. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of dark bread/pumpernickel. A noble hop earthy, dark fruit hop presence gives it a nice aroma. A touch of mild roast comes through.

The taste is of medium dark grain and sweet chocolate. Some subtle dark fruit. Slight hint of roast. NIcely balanced.

The body is smooth - almost creamy. Lighter side of medium body.

A nice easy drinking traditional black lager. Can drink plenty of this and be a happy man! A great deal, as I bought it for 1.25 a can (Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ). Great bargain!

From the one pint can dated 04-05-2016 with an expiration date of 04-11-2017. Sampled on August 27, 2016.

Dark chestnut brown pour with a quick lasting tan head.

Char and tobacco malt forward sweetness in the aroma with a low to no hop profile.

The body is a tad acidic and in the medium range.

The taste is a nice step up from the aroma with a lovely roasted malt sweetness and a mild to moderate semi-dry finish.

Black in color with with moderate light penetration. There’s a quarter inch of creamy beige on top. The aroma is of dark bready malt and toffee. I’m tasting dark, bready malt, cola, and then a light hoppy bitterness. The body is light and refreshing.

I got this beer from a friend who recommended it as I have never had a German Schwartz beer. It was very refreshing for a dark beer with roasted malt flavor which went well with my steak. I would highly recommend it too.

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like light roast, slight vanilla lactose, earthy hops, and toasted bread.

This is definitely a bit watery, but it's drinkable, and the flavors are nice. There's a nice roast character, but I want it to be stronger. It's very creamy, with a bit of a fruity tang on the finish, probably from the yeast.

This is light bodied, crisp and mostly clean, with a moderate level of carbonation.

This is a little bit bland but interesting enough to try.

$ 1.06 (Including discount and tax)/500 mL can ($ 0.063/oz) at Spec’s, Live Oak, TX.
Can dated E 04.11.2017 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – toasted malt, lasts but fades.
Head – small (Maximum two cm, aggressive pour), tan, creamy, average retention, diminishing to a two mm ring and rocky partial layer.
Lacing – poor – a few tiny islands.
Body – dark brown/black, opaque.
Flavor – toasted malt, very slightly bitter. No hops evident. No alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.

Even though this is past the expiration date, it’s still a decent beer.

Poured into dimpled seidel. Nice head, but then it fades. My lace was shaped like kokopeli, whatever that implies.

Nose is plain lager malt. Flat, no hop at all.

Taste is a little burnt, nice wheat malt, some wheat, very light chocolate.

Big mouth, dry finish.

Hearty, if not overly thrilling. The kind of dark German beer that pairs well with food. Fans of dry stouts and Dunkel lager would enjoy, too.

Picked this up at one of those specialty beer stores where you can buy it by a single can or bottle. This is a good German dark. Nice roasted aroma, pours very dark with almost no lacing. Has a nice hop finish.

I picked this up on a random hunch at Total Wine and Beer in Mueller in Austin, TX (Shout out to Stephen!) and brought it home. I chilled it in the fridge for several hours for optimal cooling.

Dispensing it into a tall pilsner glass, I find a thick head, weighing in at 5+ inches that slowly dissipated. A rich, nutty brown that without backlight is pure midnight black! This is thick, rich beer at its best. A bright pure-white LED bulb viewed through this beer is blood red! If you want superior feel and look, this will give you exactly what you want!

It doesn't let down in the tertiary senses either. The smell is sweet like aged molasses, sharp and spiced and delivers a rich, honey-wheat rye bread flavor on the tongue. It fills the mouth with weight and a sense of importance. You KNOW you're drinking a good beer. You just know it.

If you can get Colbitzer Heide-Brauerei's Schwarzbier, just get it. Just drink it! You will NOT be dissatisfied. If there's anything I can say, this beer will SATISFY!
