Large, heavy bottle, caged and corked, best before date on the rear label. (30/06/08) Pours very dark chocolate, dark tan creamy head, that leaves medium, splattered lacing. Chocolate, licorice, toasted marshmallow on the nose. Active carbonation, produces some prickles on the tongue and palate. Bitter, dark chocolate carries the load here. Big and bold Belgian with plenty of interest and complexity. Dark grains, more chocolate, licorice, anise and drying hops in the mid section and rear. Nice stuff, dark Belgian lovers, go get some.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into flute. Bottle labeled best by 30/06/08.
A: Pours a dark, cloudy blood orange with large amount of carbonation. Thick light tan head produced that lingers moderately.
S: Yeast, dark fruit, alcoholic esters, and caramel malt notes.
T: Doesn't quite live up to the aroma. Raisin, bready yeast, and hint of malt. Carbonation and alcohol tend to overpower a bit too much (yes, this is the style).
M: Nice champagne-like carbonation on the tongue. Light and refreshing.
D: Definitely drinkable--light and refreshing with a decently complex taste. A good beer, an interesting style, and I'm glad I tried it. It is a fairly spendy beer...there are much better beers at a quarter to half the price you'll pay for this one. That said, I recommend trying it at least once.

Was given this bottle early in December 2007. Refrigerated until consumed on 05/11/08.

Cork popped energetically on this impressive-looking bottle. The beer is dark caramel colored and very carbonated; I had to wait between pours for the head to die down in order to top off the glasses.

Aroma is sweet and inviting, redolent of spices and yeasty bread.

Flavor was a wonderful combination of caramel maltiness and a tart, almost sour tang. Some oak notes and a touch of chocolate. Carbonation was beautifully executed, giving the brew life on the palate.

No hint of the ABV in the flavor.

Masterfully executed beer.

I shared a gold foiled, caged and capped 750 ml bottle with imacoug. We poured the bottle into chalices.

A: It poured a dark brown hazy body with a rich and creamy robust chocolaty tan head. The head was sticky and tretained well before receding to a ring around the collar and supporting a layered, long legged lacing.

S: It had a sweet malty base with a mountain of spices (nutmeg, allspice and white pepper) as well as bing cherries, toasted almonds and dark yeasty breads.

T: It was an unexpected flavor...somewhere between a fine Belgium Dubbel and a Quadrupel with a heath dose of carbonation. I got the tart and sweet fruits, nutty flavors from the charred oak barrels, as well as hints of chocolate and a zesty, zippy dance across the tongue. There was a lot going on in this beer and it deserves a place in the cellar. I'd like to age it a bit to see how well the flavors blend and balance with time.

M: It was smooth and crisp, sharp on the tongue for a medium bodied brew. The sweet front was balanced with a spicy back. The alcohol was well hidden and it was aggressively carbonated without being overly bubbly. Nice clean and refreshing finish.

D: This beer grew on me as I moved down the glass. It needs to breath before it can be fully enjoyed. It deserves to be savored and is an unlikely candidate for a long session. However, I want more and more and more.

Picked up for a ridiculously cheap sale price of $10 at Green's, this 750 ml. Champagne style bottle was impressive even before opening. The loud pop while pulling out the cork was quite a bit like opening a Champagne, but the Burgundy colored liquid with a large foamy head looked nothing like it. It was an impressive looking beer nonetheless. I'd almost call is a cross between St. Bernardus Abt. 12 and Duvel. The smell was quite a fruit barrage, led mainly by red apples, and followed by cherry and strawberry. The taste was quite a bit like a Quadrupel but without a lot of the intense alcohol. The fruits detected by the nose were here with some raisins thrown in. Earthy and spicy hop presence was detectable. Amazingly easy to drink for such a big beer with a creamy and dry texture that just glided down with each sip. Felt quite a bit lighter in the mouth than it really was, which i think was quite an intentional effect. Much better than the Brut Reserve in my opinion, as this one tries not to imitate something else, and is a better drink as a result.

A steal of the century deal at Whole Foods in Austin, TX. $15.99 for a bottle that would normally cost $30.00!

Paired with a selection of small dessert treats from the excellent bakery/choclatier at this particular Whole Foods. This may be one of the perfect desert beers.

Bottle is labeled with a best by June 08 date.

Appearance: Dark Brown but translucent body that glows a mahogony red when held to the light. Carbonation is steady and aggressive. Head is champagne like and bubbly.

Nutty aroma with dark fruit yeast esters of plums, raisons, dates, and figs. Chocolate is minimal at best, surprising, but appreciated. This can pair with chocolate without being overkill. It also complimented a pistacio cake and an almond fruit tort with cream well.

The body is light and bubbly, sweet but ion no way cloying, utterly balanced, and totally drinkable. There is not hint of a higher than average ABV.

Flavors of dark fruits, chocolate malts, and caramel are found. Finish is nutty and spicy.

I just loved this beer and am jealous of anyone who can take advantage of the ridiculously low price at Whole Foods, Austin.

Pours a dark brown with an abundant frothy head that sprung up with even with an extremely careful pour. Aroma is dried fruits and burnt caramel and molasses. The taste is a very complex blend of dried fruits, caramel and some bakers cocoa. The beer is certainly heavy, but the Champagne carbonation does a nice job of smoothing things out. This one, while smooth and refreshing, is certainly a sipper that benefits from warming.

Appearance - After a very healthy cork pop, this deep brown ale with blood red highlights, formed a big fluffy head. Retention was very good as the receding foam left nothing but smallish whisps of lace on my goblet.

Smell - Deep alchohol infused apricots, which is a little weird coming from a dark ale, a peppery/yeasty sharpness, and husky grains come across from several deep whiffs.

Taste - A little bit of alchohol, and dark grains smooths arcross the tongue, quite watered down in taste despite the 12% alchohol and dark color. Hints of over ripe cherries, and apricots again find their way across the palate, but again in subdued abundance. A little sweet as hops are maybe just a little musty/earthen across the sides of the liquid.

Mouthfeel - As one would expect from any "Champegne Beer" the mouth explodes with carbonic creaminess, and a sharp prickly carbonation. After that initial shock, the thinness really comes through and you feel more like you're drinking a bud than a monster belgian. Is that a bad thing, not neccesarily.

Drinkability - Very easy to lose yourself with larger than needed gulps, the lighter flavor, and thinner mouthfeel make this strong dark Belgian a danger to anyone who dosn't know of the ABV.

First glass resulted in an oversized head, so second glass was poured even more carefully. Still three fingers of tan foam sit on top of a deep ruddy brown body. Might have given another half mark if it wouldn't be so hard to pour.

The smell is somewhat vinuous and fruity. Alcohol notable, with a mix of fruity and herbal aromas. Dark grapes and something apple-like. Nice.

More fruit in the taste. Again the dark grape flavour and a semi sweet apple impression. Finish is quite dry and vinuous. Some herbal hops in there as well. Alcohol heat notable, but not very much, especially considering the strength.

Some body to this beer, with lively carbonation. A bit sharper on the tongue than I would like, but still not bad.

Too drinkable for the strength. An easy beer to lose track of, the bottle was gone far too fast.

A very careful pour produces a seven finger thick, lightly browned, tan colored head that just keeps on growing; it overflows the top of my glass quite a bit. The beer is a dark brown color, but shows a clear, concentrated red hue when held up to the light. The aroma is quite inviting as I am inspecting the beer visually; richly caramelized bread notes, toasty grain and dark fruit aromas are all noticeable. A closer inspection of the nose reveals additional aromatics of green apples, raisins, a green-spicy-herbal note, cocoa, and warming alcohol (enough so I can feel it at times in my nose). This is interesting as it has the fruit character of a dry Belgian Tripel, but has some dusty, dark malt aromatics thrown in. The aroma just doesn't have a depth to it that I would like though it is nice.

The beer has sat for some time in my glass with lots of time to lose the voluminous carbonation. At this point it tastes quite creamy and a bit sweeter than I was expecting. The beer was served at 50°F (10°C), so a bit warm for the amount of carbonation, but it is quite open in its flavor profile. Sweet flavors of chocolate flavored caramel, rum soaked raisins, The beer finishes with an appetizing, fermentation derived, spiciness and a dark malt bitterness; flavors reminiscent of white pepper, ginger, clove, bitter chocolate and a touch of espresso all add to a slightly astringent, biting finish. At times the alcohol is quite noticeable in the finish, really even hot, which is not unexpected in a beer with such a, relatively, light body and of this strength. I like that this beer is so light for a beer of this strength. If it wasn't for the alcohol, this would be dangerously drinkable.

This really needs to be a bit more tame on the alcohol front to be really good, sure you could chill the hell out of the beer and that would reduce the alcohol, but you would lose so much of the fruit, malt and spice character then.

At over $25 a bottle, it won’t be frequenting my cellar or my shelf, which is too bad. This is an excellent Biere Brut. Incredibly complex nose, with sherry, vanilla, and fine wood all showing up. Oak dry taste with some coffee notes. Balanced bitterness with alcohol zest and oak.

Appearance: Kaboom goes the cork! Pours a cloudy, dark brown body with a fizzy, medium-sized off-white head.

Smell: Earthy, yeast-drenched aroma with notes of chocolate, dark malts, and lemon.

Taste: Chocolatey taste with a subdued sweetness buts up against a sour, lemony taste. Faint, berrylike fruitiness. Earthy, spicy yeast character. There's a little tartness in the drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Spritzy carbonation. Warming alcohol presence.

Drinkability: An interesting mix of flavors, but, in all honesty, I preferred the Brut Reserve.

I had a 750 ml bottle labeled as Dark Brut, but this is probably the same. It pours a dark brown color with a creamy off-white head.

Smell is a bit tart and has some cork in it. A nice fruitiness, dark fruits that combine with the caramellic maltiness and chocolate. The beer is light roasted and has some gumball notes. The champagne yeast adds a smell that is hard to describe, champagne-like, or grapes.

Taste is light roasted with chocolate, caramel and a very light pilsener maltiness. The beer is low bitter. The yeast creates a Belgian profile with dark fruits, exotic fruits and a peppery finish. The champagne yeast gives some grape skin notes. I found the beer to be too thin for a 12% beer. The alcohol was very well hidden.
For the price and packaging a rather bland and uninspiring beer.

This beer and its review is in honor of the late Michael Jackson. I was unable to properly toast him with others at a bar, but at 9:00 p.m. Oct. 30th in Chicago I stopped in the middle of work and with a few others raised a glass to the Great MJ. Its also worth noting I wrote this while watching old episodes of The Beer Hunter on VHS tapes, the Belgian episode none the less..
Corked and caged 1 pint 9.45 fl, bottle states best before 03-06 2008.
I Chilled and poured this into a flute like glass. The head is immense, about three fingers tall with hints of something reminiscent of black berry red and it is going literally no were. Body is dark rusty brown with hints of burn amber and undertones of rudy red. Retention is very good and lacing is apparent.
Aroma is of complex alcohols, a slight bit tight at first, but opens up soon. At the start I get that similar sort of dry toast crispness as with champaign or similarly fermented beverages. As it worms up darker fruits become apparent black current, maybe black berry, a touch of pomegranate with hints of toffee.
Taste is crisp at first and then rounds out as the intense carbonation mellows out and the fruit esters become more apparent. Bitterness is hard to really get a grip on, but it is well balanced and finishes dry with slightly peppery notes maybe even mild peppers.
The alcoholic strength of this is so sneaky, its present in the taste and in the smell, but only in the most pleasant and subtle ways. It is dangerously easy to consume this rather fast, it caught me fast. I assume it has something to do with the intense amount of carbonation.
The mouth feel is very Champaign like reminds me of a big brut rose'. In hind sight it sort of reminds me of a creamy kir royal. Great beer truly unique, intoxicating and delicious.

Decanted from a corked and caged 750ml w/ a best by date of 6/30/08,

A - Hazy, reddish brown w/ everlasting tan head that settles leaving a smattering of lace.

S -Candy, rum-like sweetness with spicy scents. Noticeable alcohol aromas combine w/ nutty accents.

M - Sweet + slick, smooth but the feel of a 12% comes out at times which is totally natural. A round smooth finish with gentle spice notes.

T - A nutty, cand-like taste w/ roasted nuttiness and toffee w/ faint hints of spice. Pleasing bitterness in the taste w/ dark chocolate flavors. Light finish w/ herbal sweetness and gentle ginger tinges.

D - A smooth and highly drinkable dark belgian. A nice candy sweetness is lightened by the effervescence and prevents the beer from tasting like a big ale. I appreciated the Bier Brut and will definitely try a Dark Brut again.

Appearance: Pours a pretty clear dark garnet color with lots of bubbles rising to form a vortex in my tulip glass. There is about a 1/4" head of tannish bubbles that is well maintained by the bubbles rising. There is very little lacing left on the glass after drinking.

Aroma: I get a mild citrus along with some clean chocolate and a very noticeable peppery component. As the beers sits and the head gets a little smaller, the hops are coming out a lot stronger.

Taste: The flavor is of a medium to light bodied beer that seems lighter due to the high carbonation. There is some sweetness that I noticed in the beginning of the flavor profile, but this soon mellowed to give way for the hops and alcohol to lead the finish. The sweetness is there even as the beer starts to warm up some, but the hops are very present the whole time. The carbonation plays a big role in the overall flavor of this beer, and makes the finish really refreshing...until the fizzing stops and you are left with an evident alcoholic warming on the back of the throat.

Opinion: This is an interesting beer, and it really doesn't reflect its color in the taste. It doesn't have hardly any of the caramel sweetness that you would expect from such a dark beer. The assertive hopping make this beer a bit hard to classify as well. It is a nice experience, and I would recommend trying this one with like a beer club or something when a bunch of you can share the financial hit. I paid over $25 for this bottle, and am drinking it by myself. With 12% ABV, I will surely get my money's worth by the end of the bottle, but I knocked it on the drinkability strictly for the cost.

Poured into a champagne flute. Dark reddish-brown with a medium desnsity, very active tan head. The smell is chocolate and tannins, backed by a pronounced yeast note. The taste is very intense, sweet plums and dark chocolate. The finish has notes of orange and nutmeg. Outstanding. The mouthfeel is nicely effervescent but a bit thin. The drinkability is great. There is an alcolhol warmth to the finish but this beer really masks the alcohol well. If you like Belgian brown ales and if you like good champagne, definitly try this. If you can afford it. Ouch.

Very carbonated. Upon opening, after chilling, foam gushed over the top. A quick trip to the sink made sure it didn't get on anything. It pours a deep black color (ruby tinted when held up directly to the light) with a creamy half of head atop it. Nose is a bit disappointing: just some fairly ordinary malt, no interesting yeast character. Malt character is lightly roasted, with no chocolate or cocoa notes than I can detect. There's some grassy hops and moderate bitterness and a little biting yeasty phenols. Alcohol is somewhat apparent in the (dry) finish as well. Very spritzy body, light for the strength but with a good mouthfeel.

Not that bad, unless you consider the $26 price tag. Definitely not worth that. Inferior to the ordinary Brut.

Mahogany copper color. Frothy head settled quickly. Dusty, musty aroma of burnt sugar/ raisins. Sweet dark stewed fruit flavor, hairy carbonation. light/medium body with sweet burnt sugar finish and warming alcohol presence. Better than the lighter version, but still - this emperor is also wearing no clothes.

starts with a very dark red beer, nearly opaque, with a moderate light tan head. nose is somewhat spicy and peppery. I have not had this beer before, and only bought this one bottle from

taset is slightly metallic, with some other things that seem to get lost inside this.

i keep drinking, and find very little of remark in this beer. there is a faint hint of more roasted malt, a vague sense of some fruitty or triple-like notes, but this beer seems to be missing the bulk of its profile.

wonderful packaging and presentation, but I miss the point of this beer. the taste greatly underperforms the nose. I was also unimpressed with ttheir normal 'brut' beer, so maybe it is a style issue.

Vintage Reserve 2003 on label. Poured cold from the fridge into a goblet, probably too cold as the taste livened a bit when it warmed up. A very light and airy tan head rose high in the class as the brown and tan highlights swirled. Light smell, pleasant. High carbonation evident on tongue with malty taste that strengthens with the temperature. Overall, a pleasant beer, fun to drink, and well crafted. But, like Deus, not a beer I'd travel a long ways for or get more than one bottle at the store. Fun for me since it's my first bottle from the Rare Beer Club since Minnesota has been added to the list of acceptable states.

75 cl. bottle. Dark color with a creamy some brownish head that lingers for a good while. Aroma of chocolate, dried plums and spices. Body lighter than I expected. Taste of chocolate, champagne mouthfeel, Jerez wine, some honey. After a while it leaves a brandy feeling. Not the best of the Malheur, imo.

Dark burgundy color. Small, compacted, light mocha colored head. Lightly aromatic, strange, funky aroma with dark, roasty tones. Hazelnut flavors abound with light chestnut flavors along with roasty and toasted tones and a touch of raisins. Well hidden alcohol and nice mouthfeel.

Presentation: Sampled at the 2006 - 12 Hour Belgian Beer Party - held at Pizza Port Carlsbad.

Simply listed under the “Bottled Beer List” section of the Beer List at “#46 – Malheur Black Chocolate”.

Appearance: Black looks which exhibited a very dark brown with a deep ruby flashing clarity when held to the Carlsbad sunlight. Head was a fast rising one, tan colored and deep with a lovely expanded foam look that dropped to a creamy ring with some lacing.

Nose: Didn’t get much here. Nutty with some dark fruits, no chocolate though, that I thought strange given the name. Low on strength with a disappointing cross-section, towards the end I had whiffs of cocoa which helped rescue this one.

Taste: The alcohol is here, it was the first thing I noticed, especially as I decided to kick off the proceedings at Pizza Port with this one, a 12% brew at 1pm – a great way to start the day. Soft cocoa and high carbonation lends a mixed feel. The dark fruits in the middle are nice enough, and the trace-heating blended nicely with cocoa malts and a taste of dried blood in the finish. Nonetheless, it didn’t feel as complex as I expected, in fact it was rather simple at times. Nice enough though.

Mouthfeel: Middling body that had low levels of finely dissolved carbonation. Far from watery, but there was somewhat of a tired champagne feel to this. Just above medium at best

Drinkability: I had a “that’s it?!” puzzled moment once or twice whilst drinking this. True, I did get through half the glass easily enough, but only to find myself a little bored and rather under whelmed by this one.

Overall: One of the first brews I had at the Festival from a bottle freshly opened in front of me. Strange one this though, maybe I’m the party pooper here but I didn’t really care for this one at all or understand all the fanfare that surrounds it. Its a quality brew but a tad “bland” for a 12% brew and the chocolate aspect felt muddy. Over-rated? There I said it.

I forgot to write down the vintage, but the bottle looked quite old as the ripped label was showing lots of signs of aging. Aroma is heavy with chocolate malts and Belgian yeasty notes. Hints of dark fruit as well. Crimson hued brown/black color with a frothy tan head. Very concentrated chocolate malt flavors in the fore followed by a hint of raisin and cherry sweetness and leading into a slightly dry and funky finish. The chocolate and dark fruit flavors linger nicely in the aftertaste.
