Wisps of carbonation smoke float out of the bottle after a big pop of the cork. Pours a hazy brown and topped with a smallish, but lingering tan head. No lace to speak of on the first glass, but jagged fingers of lace existed upon a second pour.*

Subtle but complex aromas of dark chocolate, ripe cherries, sour fruits, currants, figs, beer bread and burnt sugar. Taste is not as complex as the smell, and almost underwhelming with more dark chocolate notes, unripened dark fruits (plums, grapes) grain and yeast.

Creamy and medium to heavy mouth-feel initially, but becomes a bit thinner, with a pseudo-champagne-like feel after a while. Alcohol heat is amazingly subtle and not even noticeable until the very end.

Not for sure this one completely works for me, but glad I tried it either way.

* It is also important to note that the froth in the bottle had actually overflowed, spilled out a little in the fridge, and left a semi-hard, honeycomb like nice-sized chunk of lace around the rim while I was drinking my first glass.

2009 rate.

Bottle opens with a huge, resounding POP! I love the "mushroom" corks they use on these. Westy 12 like in appearance, thin, creamy, cobwebby head, and a darkbrown with reddish edges. I'm immediately comparing this to some great Belgian quadruppels, specifically Rochefort 10, Westy 12, maybe St. Bernardus 12. It has the kind of blueberry-like element of the Rochefort, the beautiful malt and dark fruits of all three. The feel is a touch thin. Not boozy, very lively, spritzy, deep, and elegant. Extremely underrated given the huge appeal this should have for anyone who likes the big belgian quads.

Clear dark burgundy topped by a small quarter inch head that retains solidly. Dark fruits are dominant on the nose. Raisins, currants, anise, dark candi sugar. A bit herbal too, bringing to mind sage. Champagne like on the palate, highly carbonated with dark fruit and caramelized malt flavors. Figs, raisins, black licorice, a light herbal bite in the finish. Finishes dry, tannic, lightly roasted. Light bodied, fairly drinkable for what it is. Pretty nice stuff.

A: The beer is cloudy dark brown in color and poured with a thin beige head that faded away and left lacy patterns of bubbles.
S: There are moderate aromas of malty sweetness and notes of chocolate in the nose.
T: The taste has lots of malty sweetness and chocolaty flavors as well as some hints of dark fruits.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and a bit creamy with a very high amount of carbonation. There is some warming from the alcohol in the finish.
D: The high amount of carbonation seems to hide some of the alcohol content, making this beer a bit easier to drink.

An absolute stellar beer! All of the complexities of Belgian Dark Strongs with a touch of sour up front and a sweeter/powdered sugar ending.

The pour brings a deep mohogany and lavender-ish pour. Somewhat rusty in it's hazy appearance, the ale has an effervescent appearance and lead to a billowing light tan head, great retainage, and lacing. Beers just don't have a much better appearance.

Tart aromas of ripe berries, cherries, and grapes fill the nose with a estery/spicy mix. Light pepper and zesty tropical fruit rinds give a balance to the fruity-sweet nose. Sweetened with a hint of honey and we have a powerfully aromatic beer with more delicate scents here and there.

Flavors are the most remakable aspect of the beer. An early tart flavor of cherries, under-rippened berries, and red grapes give an almost wine-like flavor to the beer. But the tartness and vinous character slowly fades into a cotton candy/powdered sugar/confecionate sweetness that is both appetizing and fullfilling. Low in hops, the beer achieves balance in its shear complexity in flavor and mild spicy phenolic character.

Where richness and weight could be expected, this Dark Ale's effervescent lifts off of the palate to bring life and airiness to the beer drinking experience. As the carbonation fades, the cotton candy aspect makes the beer evaporate in the mouth with a confectionate sweet but lightness that is magical. The brunt of alcohol warmth is not worth mentioning- the beer is effortless to drink.

This beer should be an opidome of the style- it's effortless nature at such complexity is astounding. The balance is formitably malty-sweet yet complex. Simply a joy to drink.

S - Is of some sweet malt with dark fruits

T - Starts off with some sweet caramel malt then the dark fruit flavors come through

M - This beer has a medium body with high carbonation to it

D - This is one of those beers to have to celebrate a bachelor party with on a yacht but protect your flat screen from lamps after your wife finds out how much you paid for the bottle but seriously its a good beer thats worth picking up for new years or something

750ml corked, caged, and foiled bottle.

The cork exits with a huge pop. It pours into the champagne flute a deep reddish brown with a creamy tan head that absolutely does not recede.

It has a light champagne scent over some coca and a basic Belgian dark ale scent.

It is decadent. It has a nice alcohol bite and some roastiness. The main flavor is dark chocolate with some ripe dark fruits. It is sweet but not overly.

It is velvety smooth, the mouthfeel is utterly perfect.

An amazing unique experience, try it.

Bottle says bbe 30 June 08. In any event, good beer. Bottle gave a good pop to the cork. Poured with a nice tan head which quickly subsided and a tiny bit of lace. Color is a hazy amber brown. Aroma is malty, yeasty, vineous. Flavor is typical dark Belgian and like aroma. Body seems a bit thin but high carbonation makes up for it. Boozy finish and fairly short.

Cracked this on a good friend's birthday..

This is my first "Bière de Champagne / Bière Brut"

We almost nailed someone with the cork when it popped. Champagne anyone? Not a gusher though.

Gave this a pour, my glass was rapidly engulfed in a huge off white head. What lurked underneath was murky and brown...sort of dark chocolate in color.

The aroma is sweet and malty - faint chocolate. I can pick up some booze and an earthiness - sort of like faded hops.

The taste and mouthfeel took me by surprise. Here we have a light and prickly mouthfeel, contrasted heavily by dark fruits, molasses, spice, and faint chocolate. Im getting bitterness but I cant detect and hop presence. The consistency is definitely akin to champagne, which makes this an interesting drink.

I wouldn't call this hot but the 12% is warming, another contrast to the light body of this brew.

This brew is interesting and fun. Everyone at the party wanted to try it after seeing a strange brown liquid spew out of an unassuming "champagne bottle". Some of them loved it, some of them... didn't. For me - generally enjoyable, easy to drink, a bit pricey.

Was feeling a bit extravagant at Max's today, during 72 hours of Belgium.

The beer pours an attractive cola color, with pretty good head retention and lacing. On the nose I get an attractive blend of chocolate and brown sugar, with some interesting underlying spice and yeastiness. Very definitely there's something of a champagne aroma in this well crafted beer. On the palate, this beer is just flat out delicious. Along with the expected brown sugar and chocolate, I get some dark fruits and spice. This beer has some moderate sweetness, but the spice in this beer counters it very nicely, leading to a fairly dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, and I got something of a creamy mouthfeel after the beer warmed a bit. Alcohol is very well disguised, which is a concern given how easy drinking and delicious this beer is (and given the 12% abv.).

This is yet another very fine beer from this impressive brewery.

Appears super dark brown with a tan head that fall s to a skim that lasts. Some lacing.
Smells of dark fruit big time, plum, raisin, dark malt. Big nose
Taste follows the nose with some caramel. Nice dry/sweet finish.
Mouthfeel is crisp carbonation. Medium/full in body.
This is a wonderful rich, fruity sipper.

Pours a very dark chestnut brown color with slight amber hues when held to a light source and a 2.5 frothy beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Minimal lacing.

Chocolate malt aroma with some peppery spice subtle roastiness, sweet alcohol and estery dark fruit notes. Hints of raisin, plum and fig.

Nicely carbonated with a sweet effervescent body/flavor. Estery belgian yeast provides a lot of dark fruit flavor, namely dark cherry, plum, grape and raisin. Slight roasty chcolate malt and minimal hop bitterness. ABV is very well masked. Dry finish.

A - very dark reddy/brown, clear (except for the sediment that accidentally ended up in my glass), lots of carbonation, dense and creamy light tan head, excellent retention, some lacing

S - lots of spices, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark fruit, pretty complex, but not overly strong

T - a big ol' blast of dark fruit, raisins, dates, even a bit of currant, hint of licorice, alcohol adds depth and complexity to flavours, spice is more reserved in the flavour, it lingers moreseo in the long aftertaste

M - high carbonation is surprisingly smooth, light body, alcohol warmth not overly noticable despite the obvious booziness throughout,

D - well integrated flavours, exceptionally smooth despite the big alcohol, dry finish, light body and high carbonation

A pretty nice dark strong, smooth as a baby's bottom. Excellent in fact, but comes up short of my 3 favourites (Rochefort 10, St Bernardus Abt 12, and Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van de Kaiser). The flavours and aromas are great, but could be a little stronger.

I was picking up something different in the flavour that I couldn't quite place, but I went to their website and I see this beer is oak aged. This makes a lot of sense, as I now remember this same character in the De Struise Pannepot.

The one thing that really threw me for a loop was the ton of sediment at the bottom. I thought this was a champagne beer?

Saved this bad boy for a special occasion. Girlfriend and I shaed this bottle to celebrate our first house purchase together along with a scary movie. This beer did not dissapoint.

Pours a dak cola brown to light black hue beneath a light brown that swells to three fingers even after a soft pour into my champagne glass. Very unique, champagne-like look to this dark brew. The aroma is sweet breads, light chocolate, roasted, yeasty fruit, and a little smoke. Very complex, and pleasant aroma. The taste has some light brown and chocolate mixed with strong pumpernickle bread. Just some greay carbonation from start to finish. Great sipping beer with a sparse warmth that is a little off putting. But decptivly delicious and elegant. The great bubbles tickling the palate add to the dark Belgian Dubbel and chanpagne quality to this sipping beer.

So it's my 35th birthday, time for something worthy...and definitely pricey...

It's a Champagne bottle alright, it fits right in sitting in my 'cellar', next to the New Years' leftover bottle of the good stuff from Reims. I even avoid spraying the first few ounces all over the backsplash when twisting out the cork, as is my custom...

This beer pours a slightly cloudy ruddy brown hue, with a few fingers of fine, light beige head, that dissipates quickly, leaving curtain-like lace around the glass. It smells of dark Belgian chocolate, light dark fruit, and a bit of floral hops. The taste is sweet medium chocolate malt, raisins, prunes, a bit of yeast to remind me of strong dark Belgian ales, and earthy, drying hops. The carbonation is quite big up front, in the effervescent manner of sparkling adult beverages, but tails off quickly. The body weight is that of dark ale, so there's a bit of a perception disconnect there, and it finishes brut, I mean dry, with a little left over fruitiness. The table-wine alcohol level is very well integrated, it's barely noticeable.

A very tasty tipple, that morphed quite visibly from a sparking wine-esque drink to a decent strong Belgian ale as it warmed. This went very well with some of my girl's delectable raspberry/rhubarb pie. Summer at its finest, folks.

Dark caramel that becomes dark russet with bright tangerine highlights when backlit. The sandstone colored head is light and airy, with less character than expected. Persistence is a positive, but then that's to be expected with biere de champagne carbonation. A lovely array of lace sticks to the glass and hangs on for a bit.

This beer smells like a BSDA. Forgetting the unique brewing process for a moment, that's essentially what it is. Medium-dark fruit is complemented by a Belgian yeast spiciness. I'm not sure where chocolate comes into play, since that word doesn't appear on the label.

There are some breweries that hit me just right. Brouwerij De Lantsheer is definitely one of them. Malheur Dark Brut (Dark Reserve) is my third beer from these guys and is the third humdinger. This Belgian strong dark ale drinks and feels much lighter than the ABV would suggest... probably because of the methode de champenoise by which it was brewed.

The high alcohol content gives the beer a certain firmness and seriousness of purpose. On the other hand, it's buried exceedingly well, with no hotness whatsoever. Belly warming, we got. Good thing I'm not driving anywhere for the rest of the day.

The flavor profile goes something like this: gingerbread and molasses cookies drizzled with melted caramels, fig paste, raisins and plenty of clove. The beer is actually less sweet and more bitter than most BSDAs, which only increases drinkability and causes me to keep tipping up the glass more frequently than is wise.

My first impression was that the mouthfeel was too light. However, keeping style in mind, it's right where it should be. The beer expands on contact and fills the mouth with a silky creaminess that was no doubt envisioned by whoever invented the classic methode de champenoise (that's great fun to say with a French accent).

This 750 ml bottle of Malheur Dark Brut cost $25.99. At that price, needless to say, I'll never buy it again. Still, it wasn't a waste of money because I'm getting a great deal of enjoyment out of the experience. If you love the BSDA style (and recently won the lottery), give this one a serious look.

Dark amber body with a champagne-ish head. The aroma is dark malt and earthy yeast with brown sugar notes. We detected a faint wet cardboard note which may point to a mildly infected cork or maybe we just had to a few too many that night and started imagining things.

Flavor is sweet, dark sugars and earthy yeast funkiness. Very subtle and complex, not unlike good champagne. The body is impressive, a velvety flow over the tongue.

This was a good beer, but it wasn't great and at this price, I think it is fair to expect greatness. Would be fun to have the funds to cellar a few for several years, but alas, I do work in the beer industry.

Sizable light beige head that recedes quickly but leaves decent lace on the glass. Deep brown, but bright light can still shine through.

Sweet aroma of brandy with a touch bitterness from the darker malts. Somewhat earthy.

Very sweet flavor with a touch of hop at the swallow. Described as the "Perfect Match to Belgian Chocolate", which may be true. But this is a brew that should be sipped. It is very rich, but with a good level of carbonation. Strong Sherry-like flavors. This doesn't taste like a typical Belgian; there isn't the Belgian yeast flavoring I'd expect. Despite the alcohol level, this is a deceptive beer. Certainly it would be hard to drink this regularly.

Toasting this biere de champagne tonight in honor of the passage of West Virginia HB2719, effectively raising the cap on beer from 6% to 12%, making this beer now legal in the land of the Mountaineers! Welcome to the 21st century y'all!

Appearance - uncorks with force and an immediate charge of bubbles, as if trying to make Charleston right out the bottle. I had the glass nearby but still spilled a bit on the table. The entire glass is full of foam. After some settling, I can pour beer in, but now there is a foam mass in the bottle pushing up and out. For several minutes I am dealing with the excess of foam until things finally even out; at least the bottle isn't oozing any more. The beer is a murky, polluted red/brown chock full of floaties. The head is a nice chocolate mocha color and leaves shocked bits of lace here and there, as if to tell the story of how hectic this thing started out.

Aroma - yeasty, a light solvent booziness. A sweet malty aroma with milk chocolate notes, and of course a Belgian funkiness that explains the all the aforementioned activity.

Taste - sweet, malty as expected. Milk chocolate again, and the accompanying funky yeast flavor. Warming in the belly, it has a finish with some roast to it and a drying end with an alcohol bite, though the abv is remarkably well-hidden.

Mouthfeel - oh it's bubbly, hitting the style as intended. It also has a nice smoothness and a moderate to full body.

Drinkability - a tasty and quite adventurous brew, just have some towels handy. Cheers to ya', WV.

This one's hard to find. I purchased it from a local bar that carries over 120 different bottled belgians, and took it home.

A - Dark amber color. Cloudy, but without sediment floating around. A solid amount of head with the pour. Bubbles continuously from the bottom, like champagne.

S - Nothing particularly special. Raisin-like notes and a hint of something that would make me expect a bitter flavor.

T - Smell deceived me, nothing bitter about this one. Nice and sweet like most of the darker belgians. VERY well-balanced between the fruitiness and slight chocolatey bitterness.

M - Not at all crisp like a champagne. Thicker consistency, like a milk stout with just the right amount of carbonation.

D - This is an all-around solid beer, that you could drink daily.

In summary, it was a solid beer, but I was expecting more, given how hard it was to get my hands on.

Large corked bottle, poured into a tulip. A flute did not seem right for the dark version, somehow.

This has been aged for one year given reports of excessive heat, and it worked quite well.
Dark brown with reddish highlights, a thick, foamy and long lasting tan head adorns its top. Very good looking, and leaves nice lacing on its way down.
The aroma shows you how unique and interesting this beer is, with chocolate, dark fruits, yeastiness, some funkiness, bread, caramel, spices and a touch of bourbon or something similar.
Medium body yet refreshing, this unusual beer has a mostly sweet taste predominantly caramel and chocolate, but the underlying heat, less obvious than in other reviews keeps it under check. More malty notes, dark fruits, yet finishes relatively dry and spicy.
Highly drinkable for the ABV, this is one amazing beer. Would gladly buy a full case if it was not for the price. Superb.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a nice thick foamy head with great retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of sweet barley malt is very enticing. Taste is a nice balance between some sweet barley malt with notes of caramel. Full body with great carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Very well done but unfortunately this is lacking character and I couldn't justify paying that kind of rpice for that experience more then once.

This beer was a bit disappointing after trying the most of the rest of Malheur's lineup. It's very chocolatey and too sweet for me. That's not to say that it's bad or lacking in complexity. I just preferred the dryness of their normal Brut. The flavor has a lot of interesting fruitiness with plums and brandied cherries. The mouthfeel was a touch sticky and the alcohol is felt more strongly than in Malheur's other beers.

It was paired with a chocolate fondant cake, made with the beer, with creme anglaise at the Monk's Kettle New Year's Eve dinner. The pairing was quite nice and my rating is more from my initial assessment of the beer by itself. This is a good one to drink with rich chocolate cake.

750 ml caged-corked (champagne cork) foil-wrapped bottle, poured into fluted glass:

Pours hazed brown with a fluffy white head that towers to the point of overtaking and causing some spillage. Lacing stick. Body nothing particularly great, but nice head (if not a bit much) and some nice, though broken, lacing.

The smell is of sourish fruitiness, dark bread, some cocoa. "Interesting".

The taste is of bitter chocolate, herbal/grassy notes, some sour, some sweet, some bitter. Warming alcohol sharpness.


An "interesting" beer. Personally, I like the other "brut" from this brewery more, though not by much. This one is dark-ish with grassy notes. Sourish. I don't know that it's worth the near thirty bucks spent, except for its uniqueness. Alcohol does show. But, it has a nice taste to it. The "mixed feelings" I have about it have to remain at that, because I think it is interesting, but to have once per price tag. If subsituting as a beer-lover's "champagne", personally, I would go with the other "brut" from this brewery. There is more cocoa, that might appeal to some in this, but it is at the expense of the citric qualities that is replaced by a grassiness that just doesn't meld together as well with this one. Also, the little difference in abv shows the more with this one. Very good, but...more liked for uniqueness than actual pleasure. It does have a unique way of blending an earthiness to a chocolate-ish brew. Bottom line - nice, very nice, to "try" but wouldn't spend the cash in repeating.

Corked and caged 750. With a moderate pop it goes into a Reidel Extreme Champagne flute. Why not?

A hearty dark bourbon/molasses body with significant carbonation and frothy maple sugar head. Big and bubbly with sparse lacing.

Very perfumy at first...sort of like decorative soaps at first but waves off towards more of a mild floral hop character. Yeasty and bready with heavy electricity and slight sour tone - almost like a sparkling chardonnay. Definitely unique.

Austere like champagne but with a slight sour taste at the back of the palate - again, similar to a dry chardonnay - and a light albeit malt-heavy feel up front. Even has some Old Ale characteristics - maybe a Dubbel connection would be more appropriate...a Dubbel with cocoa, dry caramel and mild coffee notes. No cinnamon, but perhaps a little gingerbread.

Palate is tight from the austere sourness that blends with carbonation to keep this crisp...very dry indeed. Warmth helps reveal the Dubbel or even Old Ale characteristics and more complexity on the hearty, grain-forward finish.

Post-palate there's some heft to this, even though the mouthfeel is rather light. This is definitely something good for a glass or two on occassion but a full bottle should be shared!
