poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a big Duvel glass. I love this beer

L: 3" of beer and 1" of head that reduces to a thin soapy foam within 2 minutes. color of an opaque Tootsie Roll

S: sweet dark chocolate & thick date paste. vanilla extract, alcohol to balance. the Belgian candi sugar smells like hard crack caramel

T: raisinets. chocolate. dates and figs. vanilla. just enough hop flavor to suggest bitter almond. dark fruit acidity

F: feels correct, just like a quad w/ mildly buzzy carbonation to keep it from squatting on the palate and make you forget 12%!!!!! oops

O: drunk. luxurious. guess it works right

Nice quadruple. Not the biggest complexity but good balance with prunes, toffee, pear, spices, low bitterness and almost no booziness even with the really high ABV. A savory drink

A delicious dark ale, with a pronounced musty aroma and a lot of esters that make you want more and more of it. Fairly sweet, with notes of molasses and burnt sugar. Full bodied and with moderate smooth carbonation. A really nice treat of a beer.

Big pour produce a big fluffy head which hung around, left lots of lacing and a film.

Nose is yeasty and a bit funky with some fruit - unusual.

Palate is a it warm - some fruit and a bit funky.

Overall a bit of a miss this one - worth trying if you like the style as I do - otherwise avoid.

Sampled from a 0.33l bottle (€5.20) at Gollem in Antwerp on 27SEP16.

Poured a deep, clear chestnut-mahogany color. Head was very thin and beige, with minimal lacing. Nose had lots of fruit - especially grapes and raisins - though it was not overly strong. Had a medium body and feel on the tongue.

It tasted fruity but with a bit of a sourish aspect to it. No one particular aspect stood out here; should have some more sweetness as well as dark fruity characteristics. There was some plum and candi sugar, but mostly I felt it more of a plain Dubbel than a Quad...

Pours a slightly translucent brown red with one finger thick, airy foam which quickly settles to a ring and leaves no lacing. Smells sweet; there's banana and dark fruit, plus some stout-like chocolate/coffee smell. It's a bit boozy but not a lot considering the high ABV. Taste is sweet, dark fruit, chocolate, a bit smokey and spicy. There's more alcohol here but it's still discreet. Oh, and some apple too? It's pretty faint. It's prickly, with a rich, warm body, and kinda sticky. Pretty easy drinking.

I'm surprised at how well hidden the ABV is; if I didn't know better, I'd put it at 8% or 9%, rather than 12%. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but not by much.

A: creamy 2 finger head, good retention
S: sweet malt and plum, pleasant but could be stronger
T: exquisite, easily one of my top 5 quads, hits a genuine sweet spot of flavor, very sweet with plum, fig and dark fruit but also has a distinct hoppiness to it uncharacteristic of a typical Belgian.
M: milky, creamy
O: had this for the first time in philly, I've been waiting a long time for it to make it to my area, every bit as good but in a different way, rich but less hoppy than I recalled, in my top 5 quads for sure, a must try

Pours a murky brown color with a medium size tan head that fades fast. Either a high level of carbonation or I shook the bottle a bit while wrestling with the cork because it foamed up on me and I lost about 1/6 of the bottle, No lacing on the glass. Smell is good sweet malt, dark fruit (raisins and plums) and some candi sugar. Taste is malty, sweet with a strong fruit presence. Didn't notice the Belgian yeast flavors although I saw some sediment in the glass. Not particularly spicy either but still a rich and satisfying flavor. Mouthfeel is rich and surprisingly smooth, a little alcohol burn but not much. This is a good but not great Quad.
