Notes: The experimental doesn’t always require using obscure ingredients or unearthing ancient beer styles. For our Hoppy American Wheat Ale, the goal was to develop a wheat beer that was not dominated by the yeast strain. Instead, this refreshing, late summer release has dominant tropical fruit hops notes of mango, papaya, and pineapple alongside the creamy wheat character we all know and love.

A: This beer pours an attractive, hazy, pale amber. The off white head is foamy with nice retention. Lacing the sides of the glass. Overall a nice looking beer.

S: The nose includes citrus notes of grapefruit and bright tropical flavors including mango and pineapple. There's a bit of dry, grassy, biscuit as well. Outstanding nose.

T: Starts off with a seemingly aggressive burst of hops that tingles the tongue, with some familiar notes of grapefruit and pine, but falls pretty flat shortly thereafter. The bright aroma does not manifest itself in the flavor and the malt presence is really dialed back, but for a faint flash of wheat on the finish. The finish is semi-dry with some unbalanced bitterness.

M: Thin moderate to high carbonation.

D: The beer is drinkable. It looks and smells great, but the flavor falls flat. I've had a few of these hoppy wheat ales and find that the wheat tends to be subdued, and I'd rather be drinking a well made hoppy pale ale or IPA.

Smells fantastic, like fruity galaxy hops. Unfortunately the taste doesnt follow up on that promise. There's a clash between subtle, traditional weizen flavors and more brash modern hop flavors. The result is confusing and unimpressive. The piney hops overshadow the sweet, mildly spicy wheat profile. A shame really, because the nose hints at so much potential. A sweeter, more balanced profile does begin to emerge as the beer warms.

My beer guru left this one for me with low expectations. Had that great wheat beer look and the wonderful IPA smell, good combination. Outstanding beer, good flavor with some bitter bite but not to much as some of the Flying Dog beers are to me. I enjoyed the beer very much and would love to have again.
